INVESTIGATION OF THE AFFAIR AT
THE FREEDMEN’S BUREAU BE
FORE COL. SICKLES.
yesterday afternoon Elijah Bright, Toby Po-
; er , Adam Bright, Ned Bristone, Wm. Mur-
ra v, Center Bull, and others, were brought be
fore Col. Sickles on a , charge of haring at
lacked and robbed Mr. Holtzclaw, of this city,
and threatened to take his life at a short dis
tance from the plantation of Mr. Pringle
Smith, of South Carolina, on Sunday last, tb e
j;qh inst-. Daring the latter portion of the
«ar a son of Mr. Iloltzclaw was killed, and
buried upon the plantation of Mr. Smith,
which is but a few miles distant from Screven’s
ferry, on the other side of the Savannah river,
r.nd Mr. Holtzclaw was proceeding on the mel
ancholy mission to this plantation of exhuming
the remains of his deceased son, for the pur
pose of having them re-interred in the family
burial place, when the alleged outrage wa 8
committed by the prisoners. The particulars
ot the affair are fully developed in the follow
ing evidence : ,
.lames Logan was the first witness called.
][e testified, that on the 19th inst., he, Mr.
Holtzclaw and a colored rian named Harry
Brown, crossed the Savannah river at
Screven’s Ferry, on their way to the planta
tion of Mr. Pringle Smith. They proceeded
through the plantation of Mr. Garrett without
meeting with any interference till they had got
ns far as the Linen Plantation, where they were
hailed by Toby Poler, who enquired their busi-
ne-s and by what authority they came upon that
plantation. Witness replied that they had
come for the purpose of gathering the remains
of young Mr. Holtzclaw and bringing them to
Savannah, and witness also pointed to the box
they had taken with them for that purpose as
evidence of the truth of the statement. An
armed crowd of negroes then gathered round
and ordered the party to turn back, as they
would not allow them to proceed further,
whereupon they started back, followed by the
crowd. They had not gone more than about
two hundred yards or so when they were again
ordered to halt, and their arms demanded by
the negroes. Mr. Holtzclaw gave up his pistol,
and he (witness) had no arms to give.—
The negroes keeping their guns presented
all the time, again ordered them to pro
ceed, which they did for some three or four
hundred yards, when they were again halted,
and one of tbe party, Elijah Bright, presenting
his gun, demanded money. Mr, Holtzclaw was
then obliged to give up seventy dollars, and he
(witness,) had but $5 50, which he was also
obliged to give. The negroes then deliberated
torafew moments,as to whether they would mur
der the entire party, and in the coolest manner
possible took the votes upon the question, when
an old man in the crowd begged of them not
to commit murder, and succeeded in prevent
ing them carrying their dioboliccl threat into
c v ecution. The witness fully identified the
prisoners, all of whom were of the worst possi
ble typd of the African race.
Harry Brown, was the next witness called*
lie testified to having been hired with his
team by Mr. Holtzclaw, for the purpose already
stated in the foregoing evidence. His testi
mony corroborated that of the previons wit-
euss. He also stated that the colored man
who first hailed them, whose name he
believed was Johnson, on being tpld their
business, said, he did not care, and .that
n> man should come upon that plantation
‘‘without an order from head quarters.’’
He also stated that the prisoner, Elijah
Bright, demanded his (witness’s) money first,
and on being told that he (witness) had no
money, as the gentleman bad not yet paid him
for coining for the body, Bright then made
Mr. Holtzclaw pay twenty dollars, which was
to be the fare of witness for taking the body.
As soon as Bright had got the twenty dollars
into his hand he then asked Mr. Holtzclaw,
‘ What are you going to give to save yourself
now; count your money and see how mnch
you have ?” Mr. Holtzclaw was then obliged
to give up more money, but witness could not
ety bow much. The crowd then shonted
“leave d d quick now, and you may go
and report us if you like; we have got men
and arms enough to whip any body that comes
after ns.” Witness was then attacked and
tom from his wagon by the prisoner Ball.—
Toby Holer said it wa# better not to use any
violence. Witness afterwards saw him on his
knees before the crowd, as if he were begging
his liie for having interfered to stop any vio
lence. •’
This closed the evidence against the pris
oners. They offered no evidence for their de
fence, and Col. Sickles accordingly ordered
their trial before a military commission.
Accident at the Theatre.
The numerous habitues-of the theatre have
Undoubtedly missed from the boards for seve
ral performances the genial face of that excel
lent and promising actor, Mr. T. M. Loud. A
evenings since, while jumping in one of the
scenes of the “ Lady of the Lake,” Mr. Loud
unfortunately sprained his ankle. Notwith
standing the apute pain he oofitinped his role
without exhibiting to the audience any signs of
to* painful injuries. We are' glad to learn
that Air. Loud basso far recovered as to be
able to appear again in a few day*. His re*
“I'Pearance will be hailed with pleasure by hu
hosts ol Savannah friends.
