Change of Provolt Marshal
Captain Clark H. Remick, of the 103d
l > c. T., who has held the position of
Provost .Marshal of this District since the
12th of October, has been relieved, *nd
M ordered to rejoin his company,Which, has
' been ordered to garrison Fdrt Pulaski.
Capt. Remick will assume command of
pert Pulaski until the arrival of Major
Manning at the Fort.. Capt. Easton, of
•he 103d U. S. C. T., the efficient and
4 ge ntlemanly officer who has been acting
as Military Tax Collector at this post for
, c veral months, lias been appointed Pro
vost Marshal, and will probably enter upon
his duties to-day. - ‘ • \f'
Captain Remick, during his official
career in our city, has won many warm
triends by his uniform utbanity and
courtesy to all with whom he came in
contact, and the fidelity with which he
h it s discharged the arduous duties of his
. onerous position, entitle} him to the
"latitude of those who have experienced
his justice tempered with mercy. We
wish the gentlemanly Captain health and
prosperity in whatever sphere of life he
may be called, for he riohly deserves it.
Sailing of Steamers.
The steamships Perit, Capt. Delanoy ;
Leo, Capt. Merrill’; San Salvador, Capt.
Adkins; Hiram Livingston, Capt. Baker,
t- all for New York, sailed from this port
[ on Saturday. The steamship North
point, Capt. Smith, for Baltimore, also
Bailed ou the same day.
.None of these vessels took out a heavy
freight, owing, no doubt, to the scarcity
j ot Cotton in our city. . The San Salva-
d r tooe out a fair number of passengers,
travellers apparently preferring, side
wheel ships to propellers.
I Thanksgiving Amour the Celored
Schools.
Of the 1,000 colored childred who daily attend
the schools recently established in our city for
them, about 500 were gathered on thanksgiving
day at Andrew's Chapel. ' ( . ,,
I Although no previous notice had been given,
'Jit tdilice was crowded b y a deeply interested
audience which manifested the livliest interest
in the proceedings. Col. Sickles and Lieatenairt
l.mig, ot the Freedman’s Bureau, with several
! other gentlemen, were present by special inVita -
tion. .• . .„ *' ’’ J," ,
Following the introductory exercises, the
cii.idren sang and recited in the order of. the
programme, in a manner most satisfactory to the
i spectators complimentary to their instfne-
' tors, and creditable to themselves.
We may remark en> passant, that the manual
er rcises were a novelty to many present, but
, were appreciated to the fullest extern—the little
cuts keeping perfect time to every motion,
guided by the sound ot a bell in the hands of
their teacher. ,
The Church was tastefully decorated for the
occasion, and the whole affair was a genuine
success, and reflected great credit upon its pro-
lectors. * !
