SAVANNAH NATIONAL REPUBLICAN.
MORNING*'
POETRY
[From Once * Week.]
A Scar* of Yeort Af*.
Down by th* breaking watm weitood.
Upon the rocky shots;
The braTe ware* whispered courage,
And bid with friendly foar
The f.lt'ring word* that told the tale
1 dared not tell before.
I ask’d, if with the priceless gift.
Her lore my life fihe’d bless.
Was it her voice, or some fair wave—
For sooth, I scaree may .
Some murmuring ware, orhersweet ce,
That lisp’d so sweetly ‘ Yes.
And then, in happy silence, too,
I clasp’d her fair, wee hand;
And long we stood there, carelessly*-
Wbile oe’r the darkening land
The sun set, and the Ashing boats
Were sailing from the strand.
It seemsd not many dayi ago—
Like yesterday—no more,
Since thtis we stoocL my love and I, .
Upon the rocky shore;
But I was four and twenty then,
And now I’m forty-four.
The lilly hand is thinner now,
And in her sonny hair
I see some silvery lines, and on
Her brow some lines of care;
Bnt, wrinkled brow, or silver locks,
She’s not one whit less fair.
The fishing boats a score of years
Go sailing from the strand;
The crimson sun a score of years
Sets o’er the darkening land;
And here to-night uportahe cliff
We’re standing hand fn hand.
“My darling, there’s onr eldest girl,
Down on the rocks belowl
What’s Stanley doing byhereide?
My wife says, “You should know.
He’s telling her what you told me
A .cor. of year, ago.’ c ^ ^ ^

HOTELS.
The Clo*e of Autumn.
Thou seem’st to pause upon thy way,.
Thou second summer of the year;
And all tby hues are strangely guy,
With death and winter verging near.
The golden days and dreamy airs
Appear in smiles to glide away;
And every varied landscape wears
The calm of splendor in decay.
There seems a joy, though solemn all,
And tender sadness floats around;
So plaintive hymnings rise and fall
O’er lakes were dying swans are found.
The browning hills and reddening vales
Show opening vistas to the sky;
And all thy wandering forest gales
In rustling dirges breathe good bye.
Sometimes we listen breathlessly
When souls in dying moments sing;
So, Autumn, we now look on thee,
And list thy deep toned whispering.
“Fulfill your parts,’’ doth thou not say V
• ‘Regard like me all laws divine;
So find, ere ye shall pass away,
