SATURDAY HORNING, DEC. 23d.
The Fnmlan Trouble.
Only a few short weeks ago the pros
pects of the Fenian Brotherhood were
truly flatt-.-ing—and warranted the sup
position that something would be done
and speedily, too, to meet the expecta
tions of those who believed that the ora
toncal efforts with which the people
have been regaled was not all fustian,
and that men so ready to make pledges
would not be content to let their seal ex
pend itself in words. The condition of
affairs is now quite ^ie reverse, and lit
tle calculated to inspire the friends of the
organisation with confidence iu its utili
ty as an instrument *to work out th e
avowed objects of its creation.
Bat however lightly the subject may
be treated by those having no real sym
pathy with the cause of Irish liberty, it
has a deep interest in the breasts of very
many of our adopted countrymen—and
a contemplation of affairs as they now
stand must be fraught with the bitterest
anguish to every Irishman who has trea
sured up grievances—real or imaginary—-
inflicted by the English, and
who has fondly hoped to see the day
when it would be in his power to
redress them.. In the conflict of state
ments which have been given to the pub-
bo by both parties, it would be a matter
of utter impossibility to decide which is
in the It remains to be seen
whether thMBenate in their impeachment
and final expulsion of the Executive Ma
honey, OTer-reached their authority, or
whether he has actually been guilty of
such malfeasance in office as has been
charged against him, and which would, if
substantiated, justify them in resorting
to the most summary measures to rid the
society of him. Outsiders, mere lookers
on, are not the best judges of matters
transpiring within the circle, but the in
jury done the cause by this unexpected
imbroglio is plain enough to everybody
in or out Criminations and recrimina
lions have followed each other in quick
succession, until both sides stands charg
ed with being traitorous malcontents and
swindlers, whose conduct has been in
fluenced by British gold, and who seek to
divert the funds of the Brotherhood
into improper channels, that they

Fenian household, will be received in
England with a regular guffaw and the
press will plume itself upon its
wonderful foresight in declaring from
the beginning that it was altogether su
premely ridiculous for the English
people to feel in the least alarmed on the
subject. The paroxysm of fear and
anxiety over their actions will probably
be in better keeping with their profes'
' mens, and having nothing to disguise,
they will be relieved from the suspicion
of inconsistency in preaching and prac
tice. Taken in connection with
the arrest and punishment of
few of the leading spirits in Ireland it will
be looked upon as an important victory
for the Government—which will at any
rate offset the escape of Stevens, if it does
not justify the impression that the revolu
tion is dead to all intents and purposes.
Snch, indeed, will be the case unless- the
Fenian representatives, who are to meet
in Congress in January, prove themselves
equal to the task of reconciling the two
parties to each other—and this will be no
small undertaking, considering the fact
that they have even now gone to passion
ate extremes in the discussion as to each
others’ guilt or innocence. It will give
them an opportunity to show how much
of patriotism they hold in reserve to aid
them in becoming masters of the situa
tion. If successful, it will be as good as
a battle gained, and entitle them to even
more consideration than they have yet
received; if they fail, the whole thing
will be treated as a babble, and subject

Speech of General TUlaon to Freed-
men. *
[From an Occasional Correspondent,]
Bbusswick, Ga., Dec. 19, 1865.
The steamers doe here from the South, finve
all been very much delayed this week, owing
to the prevalence of thick fogs and high winds..
Our mails are also very irregular, not reach
ing this point for a week after being sent from
Savannah, thereby causing universal complaint
Whv is this ? Cannot the matter be remedied?
There has been some excitement in town
since my last. The steamer “Nansemond”
arrived here a day or two ago haring the Nas
sau schooner “Lucy Agnes” in charge, which
had been seized and her commander placed^
under arrest, on a charge of violating the reve
nue laws. Her cargo consisted, for the most
part, of sugar, coffee, segars and gin. What
disposition will be made of her, we have not
yet learned, but general report says she will
certainly be confiscated. The “Nansemond”
left for Darien yesterday, having her in tow.
General Tillson, Chief of Freedmen's Bu
reau for the State of Georgia, addressed the
citizens and freedmen here, on Friday last, in
an excellent spe’ech. He explained to the lat
ter their rights as well as defining their duties,
and assnred them that they would be expected
to work faithfully and welL He also advised
them to abandon all erroneous ideas which
they had formed regarding their present status
as freedmen—told them that they must prove
themselves worthy of the freedom which had
been given them by their acts; that the Gov
ernment does not intend to support them in
idleness, but expsccts them to work for their
living. They need not look forward to re
ceiving lands, for the Government had none to
bestow upon them.
In giving them their freedom, and protecting

brass band of the 12th Maine regiment,
whose harmony softly swelled above the
sea of happy faces—the bewitching smiles
of fair ladies leaning upon gallant arms—
the constant bum of merriment and so
cial conversation—the ceaseless industry
of the fair chance hunters, each one of
whom will guarantee the “ takers of
chances” untold riches and gifts of more
fabulous value than ever graced the cata
logue of the Royal Havana Lottery—
the ringing of bells announcing the raf
fles—the congratulations of friends as the
lucky winners bore off in triumph their
valuable prises—to say nothing of the
gorgeous tout ensemble of the attractive
tables, clad with vernal trimmings richly
interspersed with tinsel ornaments, while
wreaths and crosses surmounted the va
rious bazaars—all conspired to make
beautiful tableau, wh^re peace and char
ity for onc6 locked arms and held high
revelry—for it was the Orphan’s Carni
val and all were happy.
We feel it incumbent upon us to urge
all classes of our citizens, rich and poor,
high and low, to visit the Oriental bazaar
ere the fair closes its doors, for there are
few so poor that they cannot add a dol
lar to the Orphan’s mite, and thereby
drive gaunt misery from the doors of that
excellent institution presided over by
the Sisters of Mercy, to whose self abne
gation and sacrifice of this- world’s joys
and frivolities may be attributed the pre
servation of thousands of unprotected
children. When we pause long enough
to consider how strong are the claims of
such benevolent enterprises upon the
liberality of every Christian in our com
munity, it seems remarkable that eo
many of oux opulent citizens who are en
joying prosperity should neglect visiting
the fair. Our merchants on the Bay
should spend a few dollars at the fair, by
taking their families there one or two
evenings. A liberal patronage has been
bestowed upon the fair, but there is am
ple opportunity left for the display of
more benevolence. We have heard many
people talk very piteously, and express
in words great sympathy for the dis
tressed and unfortunate, and we take the
liberty of inviting this class to manifest
their claims to generosify by actions
which are n inch louder than L words, and
by donating something more tangible
to orphans than whining sympathy,
Which, we ai:e sorry to say, will neither
feed, cloth nor keep warm the helpless
orphans. It is all very well to wish that
the unfor I senate will have food and rai
ment, and; be protected form the chilly
blasts of winter, but it would be far
more consistent to contribute something
from their abundance when such wishes
are expressed. Charity that is given by
lip service alone is very cheap, and the
market of life is overstocked with such
donation s. Let each of ns retire at night

And be thy constant conoh* my breast.”

them to serve their former masters faithfully, if
they made oontraots with them, and that they
would be called upon to falfil whatever obliga
tions they entered into. If they failed to do so
they would be held responsible to the law. When
he (General Tillson) made a contract with any
one he was compelled to adhere to all require
ments, and falfil all its terms, and that they, the
ireedmen, must do likewise. -
TheJureneral appointed M r. Tom Sbnrke, for
merly of your city, Agent of the Bureau tor
Glynn connty, which selection has met the al
most universal approval of our citizens. Mr.
Bourke is “the right man in tbe right place,” and
just and upright, of unexceptionable character,
and will administer justice with impartiality, and
reflect honor upon the office.
We have had a great many visitors .reoently,
most of them capitalists, who are aoxions to en
gage in the lumber business. There have been
at least a dozen individuals here during the last
three weeks, looking up mill sites.
The Brunswick and Macon Railroud question
is still being agitated, and it seems to be unde
cided whether tbe road will be built or not, but
we are hoping for tbe best.
The weather is very disagreeable. It has
been rainjng without cessation since Saturday
evening last.
We are looking for Santa Clans and Christ

wonder what they will have for

VOT^ ON NEGRO SUFFRAGE.
Washington, December 1.
In the Senate to-day Mr. Howard offered a
resolution asking the President to inform the
Senate upon what cnarges Jefferson Davis is
confined, and why he is not broaght to trial.
.. The following gentlemen of the Senate have
been annonnoed on the Committee on Recon-
stuction, viz: Messrs. Fessenden, Grimes, Har.
ris, Howard, Johnson and Williams.
Mr. Sumner presented a petition from the
colored people of Tennessee, protesting against tbe
reception oi the Tennessee delegation, until the
recognition of the rights of the colored people
Tennessee; also a petition from the white citizens
of the Distriot of Columbia, asking an extension
of the right of suffrage to tbe colored citizens.
In the House, Mr. Hubbard, of Connecticut,
offered a resolution declaring that the United
States would never recognize any government
imposed on aDy nation of this continent by the
arms of any European power, which was re
ferred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Finicke, of Ohio, made a speech against
the Radicals, denying tbe theory of Mr. Ste
vens that the South is conquered territory, and
condemning any scheme interfering with the
right of suffrage which should be enjoyed by
the South.
Mr. Raymond took issue with Mr. Stevens,
denying that the South should bo considered as
having been a belligerant; declares himself op
posed to the Confiscation Acts, which are not
only oppressive but unchristian, and that he was
disposed to do everything that a patriot should
do to restore peace and harmony to both sec
tions.
The Secretary of State has addressed letters to
the Governor and late Provisional Governor of
South Carolina, similar to those forwarded to
Mississippi and Alabama.
Washington, Dec. 22.
The name of Lewis D- Campeell, of Ohio, has
been sent to the Senate for confirmation as
minister to Mexico, Gen. Logan having declined
the appointment.
The vote of this city yesterday on the ques
tion of negro suffrage resulted unfavorable to
the question by a vote of 3500 for to 6500
against it.
