ike Pablic School and Mastic
school-
The children of the Pablic School, and those
. trending the Massie School houfe, assembled
, rday morning at half past nine o'clock, to
:..e number ol upwards of five hundred—the
:...-jority being girls—at the School Uouso of
:!io latter, corner of Abercorn and Gordon
streets, for the purpose of giving a public ex
hibition previous to the annual holiday vaca
tion which is about to take place. The dis
tinction between the Schools consists in the
fact that the Public School was supported by
the county, and the Massie School by the city-
prcvious to the war,bat subsequently, the mili
tary authorities here representing the United
States government, haye sustained them re-
fj.etivelj, by an appropriation of money.
The exercises were ably conducted by the ef
ficient Superintendent of Pablic Schools, Mr.
J F. Cana, who displayed his usual happy fac
ulty in the discharge of his duties.
A number of members of. the Board of Edn-
rauoa were present, and manifested a deep in
terest in the exhibition, expressing their an.
qualified approbation of the excellent progress
made by the popils.
The programme of exercises was a miscella
neous one, embracing spelling, both or&Jiy and
upon the blackboard, declamation, vocal and
instrumental music, Ac., and combined to ren
der the whole affair most instinctive to the chil
dren. and agreeable .to the spectators.
The courteous deportment and correct disci
pline of the children were conspicuous during
the continuance of the exercises and received
universal commendations. A great deal of
ovenile precocity was manifested by the little
a.j.irants for honors at the hands of the audi
ence, and we are sure the parents of the
scholars will have good cause for congratula
ting themselves upon the progress and intelli
gence of their children, when the regular
public examination takes place.
The schools were respectively subjected to a
severe, ordeal in spelling, and acquitted them
selves as a general thing, in a very satisfactory
ns a; n*r.
The girls, it is bat just to state, had the ad
vantage of the boys in this examination. Mr.
Cann, however, very judiciously proposed that
in January next, (when their public exhibition
would take place), the boys should have an
opportunity of a trial with the girls—ten to be
selected by either side—and the result to be
conclusive in the matter, a suggestion that
seemed to be relished highly by both parties,
and which was readily accepted by them. Now
that the gauntlet has been thrown, we shall
expect to witness some pretty sharp skirmish
ing when the orthographic engagement begins.
It would be, perhaps, invidious to select ex
amples where all acqnitted themselves in a
very creditable manner,but “Osceola’s Speech,”
' Cardnal Woolsey’s Soliloquy,” and “Ser
geant Jasper,” were delivered with a grace and
effect deserving of all the praise bestowed upon
them.
The next regular public exhibition will take
place in the last week in January, 1866, when
Major General Brannan and other distinguish
ed military and civic individuals are expected
to be present.
Altogether the affair was entirely satisfactory
to the intelligent audience, creditable to the
children themselves, and flattering to the teach
ers of both schools.
We trust that our citizens will awake at
once to a thorough realization of the vital im
portance of maintaining first class public
.chools, and with our indefatigable Mayor,
*Lo enjoys a reputation for energy and shrewd
ness at the head of the Educational Board,
we have no fear but what the most unflagging
zeal will be manifested in educating the rising
generation in our midst. Mayor Anderson was
always the warn friend of the teachers and
scholars, and we have no doubt whatever as
sistance or influence he can lend from his high
position will be cheerfully granted.

Far the Holidays.
The conspicuous advertisement of J. C.
Schreiner & Sons, which has attracted so much
attention from our readers, in another column,
is worthy of perusal by those of onr citizens
who are. in search of unique and useful gifts
for the holidays. We have not sufficient space
at oar command to enumerate one-half the list
