S’JCF-f.'I GRIEF.
BY SIKi. ADDISDTE.
There is s ^cisf the world ne’er know*,
Tbe r -r A pAic of life’s strange woes,
Th? client thought, the rankling dart,
Xfc&i breathes a sau and broken heart;
The ruby lip mar wreathe a smile,
The cuerk more brightly glow,
The rparklin • eye seem glad the while,
Yet he: rt and sonl be steep’d in woe.
Iakr .lo.-ere blooming o’er a tomb,
With r-dUat hoes and sweetest bloom,
la i.'in the fr&aTtinc© they diffuse,
la v an their rainbow tints and hues ;
For toll e reel that death is near—
Tbit c. ambling forms lie cold below,
&j>d Ui .bf’r beoaties cannot bear,
A UJui i* heal oar grief and woe.

Th • (wines round crumbling walls, •
I -c ning youth would stay time’s calls,
Yet ;D wa know it hastes decay
And gives to waste a wilder sway.
Iti T.r.. braoty, fresh and green,
It; tendril, sli; bt, and twining grace,
TcK* thei destruction sweeps the scene,
Aud soon the landscape will deface.
Thr\ like that tomb with blossoms rare,
Th". hide ’nc-th smiles Death’s features drear.
Anu that fair ivy’s brilliant green
Tho; Hast around its em’raid sheen,
I. c.^en met a drooping heart
Tt. . wiakarits grief’neath pleasure’s glow,
And wti through life a joyous part,
While all is ^ad with darksome woe.
Tha hc-rt that deepest woe doth feel,
Can . Iso best its pang conceal
And hid. from mortal eye and ear
The < ccrct *rief and welling tear;
And though thl soul be dark as night,
TV. fcro.. may seem like cloudless day,
And ioc’.' -nd smiles breathe but delight,
While hear: sad soul are far away.
Then jcl‘ c ye not—ye careless ones,
(E-.rA". £ _htcra fair and happy sous),
Tost 4 hen ye sob n cloudless face
Lii up with mirth, and life, and grace,

Ihoy i rh a c'dimf*of merry notes;
Th "wart i : Uo glad and free,
And melody th; soul o’er floats.
Luo is at t "t & shifting scene,
A car. a jit J drama and a dream;
Fir ■; con, toe cri.dled infant boy,

Then mochoo ’ iu its'earnest prime;
So.o r.z‘ enfeebled, slow with pain,
Li*./ ..sh, - rift messenger of Time,
And . tier death, new life again.
A:-d rs these * pass away,

With s ad thought or heavy sigh,
B.-v ta d for oopcs that treasur’d lie
Within -eh little span and scene,
For _!! the joys they did bestow,
T! . ,i. no'..- -g-siu may come their dream,

b.: mory brin jaf&vitchhig spell,
To hopes ad thoughts we’ve bid farewell,

So :,cfo> to vi.w aud heart the scene,
That though long years have roll’d away,
We *o.rce remember tiipe or aught
l>ut ianej’s .riafoiig pictures gay,
-A.d Al the joys the past hath wrought.
And through that spell we live again
Ike time wh.n life was free from pain;
When bo-ming love lit up the eye,
And tic j.ing year* pass’d joyous by.
Again ve . r e the forms so dear,
And he. r their tender words of love
That once our youthful hours did cheer,
-and round our hearts their kindness wove.
Ye., thror-h that spell, all is forgot,
T-o yrief and ptin that shades our lot,
And to Our heart's dark dreary hours
It come.; like spring's refreshing showers,
And ch .ft tar the shadows dark
That circle. life Titk wintry gloom,
And lights .gain love’s glowingjspark,
And bid* the flowers of youth re-bloom.
Thai, though lira may seem both lone and drear,
With no hope or bliss or way to cheer,
Yet ui ru morj’s raidi&nt scene,
We liv. ; in _ irappyjdream ;
Or if we »tk fo r future joy,
L'tfe'r cores doth end, full well we know ;

Cotton—Tbo receipts oi cotton since the 16th
instant, have been as lollows, viz: 6,878 Pales
of Upland, 105 do Sea Island, and 111 bales of
Domestics. Tbe exports during the same period
have been 8,035 bales of Upland, 128 bales of Sea
Island, and 141 bales of Domestics—leaving a
stock on hand and oa shipboard not cleared ot
10,104 bales of Upland, 1084 bales of SeaTsland,
and 519 bales of Domestics.
Oor market closed last week qaiet, bat
with a firmness on the part of holders, buyers,
however, not beinjj disponed to yield to tbrr de
mands. In the early part of tbe present week,
tbe market became very mneh excited by tbe
telegraphic advises from Europe and the North,
and holders were disposed to withhold their
stocks from the . market. Within the past few
days, however, quite an active demand sprang
p, principally from English buyers, and all fair
lots were readily taken as soon as offered. Our
figures have undergone a slight change from
those given incur last, as will be seen

Bacon—Onr market continues well supplied
with all descriptions of Bacon, with only a mo
derate demand. Holders, howevar, are stiff a*
our last quotations, while buyers are not inclined
to pay these figures. Choice sides are held at 24c;
Shoulders, 20c; Hams, 25c, for sugar-enred
meats. Pickled meats remain about the same as
last noticed, with bat little inquiry. We quote
as before: Family Pig Pork, in half bbls, $17a20;
Family Beef, $17al8.
Buttes—A very limited amount of business
bas been done in this article daring the past
week. The stock of New York Goshen on the
market is pretty good, and tbe article is held a t
50c per lb, while the stock of'Western is only
moderate, and is held at 45c per lb.
Bagging—There is a fair stock of Bagging on
tbe market, with but a limited business doing.
Gnnny Bagging it quoted at 83c; Sea Island; 27
a37)£c.
Cheese—Tbe market is but moderately sup
plied with choice Goshen or Western Cheese,
while for English Dairy there is very little call,
and the stock is very full. Factory Cheese is in
considerable demand. We quote: Choice Gosh-
an, 22c; State and Western, 20c per lb.
Cabbages—A large demand has existed this
week for Cabbages for the Christmas holidays,
but the supply ha9 been very limited, being con
fined to small receipts from the North. We
quote a good article at $12 50al5 per hundred, as
in quality.
Coffee—A good inquiry bas existed during
the past week for the lower grades of Bio Coffee:
while for tbe finer grades of Rio. and Java, there
is bnt a limited demand, and tbe stock of all
descriptions is folly up to the requirements of
the trade. We renew our quotations of last
week, viz: Rio, 32aS5c; Java, 40a43c; St. Do
mingo, 84c per lb.
Corn—The ztock of Corn on the market ia lolly
equal to the demand, which has been quite fair
for the local trade. The article is selling from
the wharf in large quantities at $1 15, and from
store at $1 80al 40 per bnsbel.
Flour—Oar merchants are fully supplied with
all descriptions of Flour, which steadily main
tains its price in spite of the fall in the Northern
markets. This is no doubt the effect of tbe steady
demand which continues to exist for this article.
Common to Extra i amily, $9>£al8; Choice Ex.
tra State, til per bbl.
Fish—There is a fair supply of Fish of all
kinds on tbe market; with a fair demand daring
the week from the retail trade. No. 1 Mackerel
is quoted at $2 90aS per kit; in quarter bbls, (525
t5 50; half bblr, $10all; bbls, <20a22, according
to quality. Large 8’s in bbls, (16 50al7; small
8’s, (14al5 per bbl.
Hat- A fair demand baa existed for this arti
cle daring the week, with a good supply on tbe
market. Holders are firm at onr former quota
tions. We give as tbe ruling rate yesterday
from wharf, (115, aud from store, (1 85al 40 per
hundred pounds.
Fruits—The market has been pretty brisk
daring the week for the retail trade, and the
stocks of the better descriptions of dried fraits
are getting low. We quote Layer Raisins, (6 60
a7 per box; Dried Figs, in fancy boxes, 86>fe per
lb; in drams, from 22a27c„ per lb. There are no
oranges of any account inmariet, and Lemons
are Tery scarce and in great'feqifeat.
Lumber—Quite a brisk business is doing in the
Lumber market, and with a lively demand, prices
have somewhat advanced. The supply on sale is
good. We quote Yellow Pise, (50 per M; White,
$5Oa80; Poplar, (80; Ash, (80; Oak, (80 per M.
Limb—Tbe stock of good Lime on the maAp t
is quite limited,, and onr rates for the article
must bo taken as nominal, viz: for pare Rockland
Lime,.i4 per bbl; Slacked Lime, |2 per bbl.
Lard—Tbe sales daring tbe week have been
to a tolerably fair extent, but tbe stock on band
is rather limited, but we think more than equal
to tbe demand. We quote prime Leaf, 25a30ci
Pressed, 24c per lb.
Potatoes—There has been a good demand for
local and shipping purposes during tbe put
week. The market ia well supplied with the ar
ticle. We quote (3 50a4 per bbl. A good article
of Peach Blows sella readily at (4 per bbl.
msnd for home use. We quote Hall’s No 1 sad
Colgate at 16al8e. per lb. T C Tymans ft Co.,
Famil; Soap, from common* retailing to family,
12 to 15 l-2c. V .
Ric*—There has been considerable inquiry for
Rice during the week, wift a light stock on tbs
market. There is little ot no .good Bice on sale.
We qnote Carolina and Georgia at l*e pe» lb;
East India, which is in little request, at 9c per lb.
Rosa—There ia little or no change in the
market since our last, and we therefore renew
onr figures, viz : Bale Rope, ISaISc ; Mani a
Ropel 80c per lb.
Salt—The market is now plentifully supplied
with this article, which, however, is in second
bands. We quote $2 62 1-2 as the ruling rate.
Molasses—The market is very bare of Molas
ses with a good inquiry from bdyers. We qnote
nominally New York Refined. S0a90c per gallon ;
Golden Syrup, 90ca(l.
SuGARs-With a large stock ef Sugars on tbe
market, there has been little doing the P***
week, and no change has taken plac( in prices.
We therefore continue to quote Portp Rico, 17a
18c per lb ; Clarified, 22c; Powdered Loaf, 88c .
Crushed, 53c per lb.
Exchanqb—Gold is not so abundant, and only
offered in small lots. The demand continues
