SAVANNAH NATIONAL REPUBLICAN, THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 28. 1865.
POETRY
Whih
HONOR TO OUR WORKMEN*
Whom shall we call our heroes,
To whom our prslue sing f
Tho pampered child of . fortune.
The I Hied lord or king?
They lire by others* Ubor,
Take ell end nothing fire j
The noblest types of manhood
Are they who work to live.
Then honor to our workmen,
Our hardy sons of toll—
Tho heroes of the workshop.
And roonarchs of the soil!
Who spans the earth with iron,
And rears tho palace dome ?
Who creates for tno rich man
The comforts of his home?
It* is the patient toiler—
All honor to him, then !
The true wealth of a nation
Is in her working men.
For many barron ages
Ear*h hid her treasures deep;
And all her giant forces
Seemed bound as In a sleep ;
Then labor’s “anvil chorus”
Broke on the startled air,
And lo 1 tho oarth iu rapturo
Laid all her riches bare !
Tis toil that over nature
Gives man his proud control;
And purifies and follows
The temples of bis soul.
It scatters foal diseases,
With all the ghastly train ,
Puts iron in the muscle,
And crystal in the brain!
Tho Grand, Almighty Builder,
Who fashioned out the earth,
Hath stamped his seal of honor
On Labor from her birth.
In every angel flower,
That blossoms from the sod,
Behold the master touches,
Ths handiwork of God!
Then honor to our workmen,
Our hardy sons of toil—
The heroes of the workshop,
And monarchs of the soil!

numerous, but the second grade is still quoted at
10al5. The brokers and private bankers are of
fered moae money at iia7 per cent at call by indi
vidual capitalists iban they can use, and this pie
thora is likely to be more apparent next month,
when, if not lower, it can hardly fail to stimulate

Gold was weaker than yesterday and generally
loaued fiat, or at 2 per cent upon the currency.
There is a disposition shown to discount the ef
fect of the payment of the semi-anDual coin in
