With regard to the damage of the Iron
sides nothing positive is known. At the
moment of striking there was great conster-
I nation on board. It was reported that the
crew in gangs were hard at work at the
pumps all day yesterday. Small boats were
seen continually passing between the Iron
sides and the Monitors. At nightfall, how
ever, she remained at her old anchorage.
Such is the narrative of thi3 brilliant affair,
Which, had it been an entire success, would
have rid U3 of the most formidable foe en
gage! in this siege. Some few have styled
it a rush undertaking, but it needs just such
an example to lead to still greater deeds in
the present condition of our good city, and
the country at, large.— Charleston Co-uner,

TUESDAY MORNING, OCT. 33.
A GALLANT NAVAL EXPLOIT
One of the most daring and gallant have
exploits of the war, distinguished by the
greatest coolness, presence of mind and in
trepidity of tho brave men associated in the
enterprise, was performed Monday night.—
This was no less than on attempt to blow
up tho Unitedlt?tate8 8teamer New Ironsides,
JyiDg off Morris Island. Though not fully
meeting the expectations of those who con
eaived the plan and those who carried it
into execution, it has called forth tho im-
b runded admiration of our citizens for the
brilliant heroism of the actors in their dan
gerous but patriotic and self-sacrifioiag ua
dertaking. A general feeling of deep aux
iety prevails to iearu *he fate of two of the
gallant spirits who went out with the expe
dition. There is every reasou to believe,
however, that those gallant men, with the
means of safety about their persons, eudea
vored to reach shore and have been picked
up by some of tbo enemy’s launches. We
gather tho following particulars from the
other participants in tno affair.
The torpedo steamer D ivid, with a crew
pf volunteers, consisting of Lieut Wm. T.
Glassed, J. II. Toombs, Chief Engineer, and
James ftutlivan,.Eixamen of the giuifeoai
Chtcora, with J. W. Cannon, Assistant Pilot
of the gunboat Palmetto State, lelt South
Atlantic wharf between six and seven o’clok
oa Monday evening, for the purpose of run
ning out to the Ironsides, exploding a tor
pedo under that vessel near ^midships, and
blow her up.
The weather being dark and hazy, favored
the enterprise. The boat, with its gallant
little crew, proceeded down the harboi,
'lining along the shoals-on tnc inside of the
Channel until nearly abreast of their formi
dable antagonist the New Ironsides.
They remained in this position for a short
lime circling around on the large shoal near
the anchorage ot the object of their visit.—
Lieut. Glassall, with a double-barreled gun,
sat in front of pilot Cannon, who had charge
of the helm. Chief Engineer Toombs was
at the engine, with the brave anduudaunted
Sullivan, the volunteer fireman, when some
thing like the following conversation en
sued:
Lieut. Gassell—It is now 0 o’clock. Shall
wo strike her V
Piioot Cannon—That is what we came
for. I am ready.
Engineer Toomb3—Let us go at her, then,
And do our best.
Sullivan (Fireman)—I am with you all,
and waiting. Go ahead.
The boat was now put bow on, and aim
ed directly for tho Ironsides. As the little
steamer darted forward the lookout on the
Ironsides hailed them with “Take care there
you will run into us. What steamer is that f
Lieut. Glassed replied by discharging one
barrel at t he Yankee sentinel, and tendering
the gun to pilot Cannon, told him there was
ano-her Yankee, pointing to one with his
body half over the bulwarks, and asked
Cannon to take care of him with the other
barrel.
The next moment they had struck the
IrousideB, aud exploded tho torpedo about
fifteen feet from the tool, on the starboard
side. An immense volume of water was
thrown up, covering our little boat, and,
going through the smoke stactr. entered the
furnace, aud completely extinguished the
fire.
In addition to this, pieces ot the ballast
had fallen in the works of the engine, ren-
deriav, it unmanagable at that lime. Volley
after volley of musketry from tho crew of
the Ironsides and from the launches began
to pour in on them. Lt. Glassell gave the
order to back, but it was found impossible.
In this condition, with no shelter and no
hope of escape, they thought it best to sur
rend r, and hailed the enemy to that effect.
The Yankees, however, paid" no atten’ion to
the call, but barbarously continued ihe lire.
It was then proposed to put on t heir life
preservers, jump overboard, aud endeavor
to swim to the shore. All but pilot Cannon
consented. The latter, being unable to
swim, said he would stay and take his chan
ces iu the boat. Lieut. Glassdl, engineer
Toombs, and Sullivan, the fire nan, left the
boat. The two first having on life preserv
ere, and the latter supporting himsclt on one
of the hatches thrown to him by the pilot.
Engineer Toombs becoming cmbairassed
with his clothing in the water, got back to
the boat and was assisted in by Cannon.
The boat was then rapidly drifting from
the Ironsides. He now fortunately lound a
match, and lighting a torch creptback to the
engine, discovered and removed the cause
of its networking, aud soon got it in older.
They then commenced to run the gauntlet
of the Monitors aud launches. The latter
•seined inspired with a seeming dread of
something supernatural^ and opened a path
right and lelt for tho little steamer. The
Ironsides fired two 11-inch shots at the party
AS they sped away, but fired completely over
them. The crews of the Monitors whicu
the steamer was obliged to pass on her re*
A Lesson for the South.—The Polish
insurrection is still raging. Telegraphic ad-,
vices report a great victory at Kanow, but
on which side, "it is not slated.”
The loregoing is an item of foreign news
copied from Northern papers of the bth in
stant, which contain European continental
dates to the 24ih Aug. It reveals the fact
that after a sanguinary contest of six months’
duration, the Polish revolution still rears its
form, erect and defiant, against the gigantic
power of Russia.
Let us for a moment glance at the relative
nower and resources of the belligerents.—
Poland has an area of 48,000 square uaile3—
or ten thou Q and square miles less than the
single State of Georgia. Her population, in
round numbers, is five millions, and the rev
olution found them without military organ
ization—with few arms—and with pecunia
ry resources absolutely less than those of
the State of Georgia. Russia, on the other
hand, boasts an area, exclusive of Poland,
ot over two million square miles—a popu
lation of over sixty millions, a regular army
of seven hundred thousand men, with mili
tary appointments equal to those of any na
tion on the faco of the earth.
Wc, in tho South, groan over the disparity
iu material strength between ourselves an‘d
the Lincoln despotism; but what is this dis
parity compared with that between Poland
and Russia? Tho North, we say, outnum
ber3 us 3 to 1. Russia outnumbers Poland
12 to 1! Lineoln, with all his absolutism,
cannot avail himselt of ihe full military
strength of the Nonh. The Russian auto
crat can put half his millions in the army.
The North h?.3 a regular force of 15,0110.
Russia lias a regular force of 700,000. We
have yet a country of 600,000 square miles,
difficult of access by an enemy—necessita
ting long and hazardous lines of communi
cation—affording very inadequate rneafts of
subsistance to tho foe—more or loss unheal
thy and impassable during a greater part of
the year—abounding in positions of great
natural aptitude for defense. Poland, upon
the other hand, is sunt tip in a territory near
ly a fiith smaller than Georgia alone, dense
ly populated, and all the elements of supply
as accessible to loe as to friend.
But perhaps you think Poland is an inac
cessible country—surrounded by high moun
tain ranges, with a few and easily defensible
passes. Not so. She has no natural bar
riers whatever, and may be pronounced a
c mparatively level country. Furthermore,
a groat railway runs from the capital of Rus
sia directly through her territory. How,
thsu, has she been able so long to baffle the
designs cf her gigantic oppressor? In no
other way, wc believe, than by the simple
heroism of her people.
Years of oppression, under a grinding for
eign tyranny, have wrought up her people to
the unconquerable dcteiminatioa to die or
to be free. The iron has entered their souls,
and made every man, woman and child a
hero.
We may take it for granted there is no
speculation—no hoarding for higher prices
—no skulking or desertion in that country.
Every man and woman is fighting and la
boring for liberty as something dearer than
lite itself. The conditions of the dreadful
struggle seem to us impossible. Poland must
again sink more hopelessly crushed than
ever under a foreign yoke." But as desper
ate as are tne chances, we believe there are
very few croakers and prophets of evil
among the Poles. They have counted the
co3t, and made up tneir minds to the sacri
fice.
In the lace of such a spectacle as this, do
not our own conduct and achievements ap
pear almost trifling? If the Poles do not
despair, should we ever doubt? If they have
a possibility of success, have we a possibility
of ihilure, outside of a lack of spirit and en
ergy absolutely disgraceful to us as a peo
ple? If we had been ground down by op
pression as the Poles have been, and as we
certainly shall be, should the North bringlus
under its yoke, the spirit of the people would
laugh to scorn the possibility of failure—
would show iu a mouth that subjugation by
the North is a physical impossibility. W itn
the lire ami patriotism of tho Poles, we
should have had peace and independence
two years ago.—Macon Til.
