■road Street.
ThU uew tUorouglifaro la now being opened
Ifom Mitchell through to Marietta street, where
it will cross and run into Pciohtrco street at tho
residence of Judge Emrd. Our preaont cfllcient
City Engineer, Mr. Basa, states that it will soou
be sufllcienUy cleared up and graded to allow
the passage ol wagons over it from Mitchell
streot to tho bridgo, whlcl) latter structure, we
are pleased to aco, la being pushed rapidly for
ward to completion. Tho improvements private
parties are putting up near this new street will
very materially assist tho City iu loveliug parts
of lirond street The excavations being made
by Mr. Larkin Davis in tiic erection of ids new
building are broad and deep, and he finds it quite
convenient to deposit thelooao dirt in the sunken
spots in tills new street Thus is tho inarch of
improvement steadily onward. In the course of
,i month, or perhaps in less time, there will bo
ready for travel an entirely now thoroughfare
about one-fourth of a mllo in length ; and while
this is going on, it is perhaps proper to remark
that the old streets are being repaired as rapidly
as possible. But, gentlemen, don’t forget to rc-
movo that rubbish from Alabama street, while
attending to the numerous other things that
claim your attention. It looks rerp badly.
Elegant Conlkctlo^ory, Bakery, Ac.
Our friend Jack has removed into his now es
tablishment on Whitehall street, a few doors be
low his old stand, and is now being fitted up in
splendid style. Ills shelves aryl counters present
a hamlsomo array of nlco things ol bis own mun-
utacturc, together with fancy candies and “no
tions" purchased in New York. When comple
ted, this establishment will be perhaps the most
complete of the kind ever seen in this city. The
basement is being urranged for an extensive
bakery, which will bo in dmrgo of that model
baker, Sir. Henry Spear, whore loaf broad will
be made ami furnished daily to families and
others. Cakes of all kinds, fresh and warm, may
he had from this department at any hour ol the
day. The candy department will he in the rear
of the building, and on the same floor with the
confectionery, and from which will be produced
candy 1 in sufficient quantity® wholesale or re
tail. In the centre of the building will ho an
let Cream Siloon, where parties of ludics and
gentlemen may repair in the warm summer eve
nings, enjoy a pleasant Utc-a-tete, and partake of
that delightful beverage. This saloon will bo
isstefully furnished, aud will become during the
summer months a prominent feature of the es
tablishment. Mr. Jack lias spared neither pains
nor expense in making every department of ids
new concern wlint it should lie, and hopes it may
prove aeeeptablc to the public.

hope Mr. button may bo well received by our

An Amusing Scene.—Quite afr ampsing scene
recently occurred under , tho payilllon of Dan
Costello's Circus at Wllnilngton,' which was not
previously announced in the bills. The Dispatch
says: f *
During tho dlsplny niado by .Costello of his
wonderful mule, and when little boys, were caTTcil
from the audience into tho ring to make the al
ways vain attempt to ride him,,a big burly sailor,
somewhat “lioavy,’’ ehtcrcd thp :rlng. and ad
vanced to the animal for tlm purpose of bestriding
him. To tills tho mule objected, aud .confirmed
Ids objection by a “double leaded’’ kick from
both of bis iron-shod feet into the pit of tlic man’s
stoinnch. To the astonishment of.cvery one, the
man returned the salute of tho mule, by deliver
ing several kicks in return, and repeuted the ut-
toinpt to mount him, when the mule again de
posited ids feet upon tho man’s wuistcoal. And
now ensued a fight between Costello, the sailer
ami the nude; Gastello, who was highly incensed
at the conduct of tlm man, endeavored to hold
tlm mule so ns to have the mnu taken from tlm
ring; nnd tlm mnu stuck to tho mule in n steady
and persistent foot fight. Which of the two lal-
ter would have conquered is unknown, as the
trial was soon brought to n sudden termination
by the summary ejectment (in tttvery ImliHeivnt
manner) of the sailor from tlm ring. This, we
tldnk, is the greatest fight on record, and was en
tirely one of the most interesting tlmt wo have
ever scon. Costello should certainly engage that
man to exhibit with him everywhere ns the man
that can outkick n mule. Strange to say, neither
animal was at all injured by tlm encounter.
