Executive Appointment.
We noticed some days ago the appointment
mode by Governor Jenkins of Mr. Campbell
Wallace, as Superintendent ot thfe State, or
“Western & Atlantic Rnilrond." It notv affords
ua pleasure to state that Jddoe W. W. Clayton
of this city has been apiwinted Treasurer of

“ Will the President Stand Firm ?>’
The doubt implied in the foregoing interroga
tory has never oppressed us for a moment. We
regret that tt seems to “cornu o’er the spirit of
the dream” of some of our compeers who, ns the
result, we predict, will prove, know but little ol
Audi Johnson when they doubt Ills purpose or*
his resolution, to cany out the work of Southern
restoration, ns iar os in ills power individually,
and os President of Hie United States, it lies.—
When was he ever known to deviate from on ex
pressed purpose, or a pledge mode to the people
he represented, or when exercising administrative
duties T Take his whole political history, and if
any one trait of bis character stands out promi
nently before all other trails, it is that of firmness
ness of purpose—fidelity lo his pledges. A wes
tern cotempornry doubts because the President
does not proceed ln hpt haste to remove nil Fede
ral office holders who wear the bodge of the
Bomner-Stevens radical school. It would have
the President proceed at once to decapitate these
men as be did the “blathering Mrs. Swlssholm”
and a “foul-mouthed Jacobin postmaster of the
little village of Forcstvlllc, Connecticut, for call
ing him a traitor. Now, this Is simply ridicu
lous' The President should be expected to do
no such thing. Time must he given him (t> work
reformation among the office holders as '.welt os
to restore the Union. The one must be made to
promote the other, and no one should be deem
ed so capable of determining when and where
the “axe" should Call, as the President, and those
of bis cabinet who sustain the policy lie Is dejer
mined to pursue. For our own part, wo have
abiding faith In the President. Neither does his
past, nor bis present, nor wlist lie indicates as
bis ftiture course, weaken our conffdeifce In him.
While differing with him in the recent past, we
never for a moment doubted his possession of an
iron-like nerve, fitting him for any administra
tive position in tills government. Thus tar, the
South owee to him much—it will owe tohlin
more. Doubt him not, people of the South, hut
give to him your confidence,'entirely, freely.
Thus fkr, he luu saved you from being the vie-
tlmsof a fanaticism that would bsve degraded
and left you liouselcas, homeless. As saruly os
be bss done this, he will do what hu proposes—
he will restore the Union. lie trill stand firm!

Mr. Editor: As there is to be an election un
der tho late statute for a Judge of the County
Court lately established, 1 beg leave to call tho
attention of tho people of Fulton county to Gen-

to fill the position. General Foster was for years
a successful practising Attorney in the Cherokee
Circuit, nnd is qualified not only os a lawyer but

Ml*« U1..1HA Oahton bss liven lieloru tho Itc-
construction Committee, and tier testimony will
leave no doubt In the mind of any radical that
tho entire South i9 disloyal, and 'thut suffrage,
property, offices, everything should bo turned
over exclusively to the negroes. Nearly all her
testimony is taken! tip with the case of u negro
napied Cato, Cato had a wife, and she had a
baby, nnd all three lived witli some mean white
in Southwestern Georgia. The mean while set
Mrs. Cato to spinning; and because Mrs. Cato
only spnn seven “knots" and n-hall instead of
eight “linots," this mean white gave the colored
Indy a tremendous trouneing. Thereupon Cato
nnd Mrs. Cato, and a bundle, <who over saw a
southern negro on thetnove without his bundle?)
took to the woods, and after much tribulation
reached Miss Clara Barton, and related their suf
ferings. Moved to indignation by this harrowing
recital, Bliss Clara'Barton got a neighboring fed
eral officer to send a force after the Catos’ baby,
chickens and bed fixlns. This was done: the
baby, chickens and tied fixlns were turned over
to Mr. Cato and,-Sirs. Cato; ami the suffering
couple were immediately supplied with rations
nnd a residence and nothing to do by the Freed-
men’s Bureau.
This is the substance ot Miss Clara Barton’s
testimony, nnd which the Now York Tribune
thinks of sufficiint importance to give to the
world in extenso. It is quite evident to any un
prejudiced mind, from tho perusal of what Miss
Barton swears was told her by a negro about ills
wife and her baby and their (negro, wife, baby
aad bundle’s) overseer, that the Sodth should not
be admitted to representation in Congress.
There has evidently been no "change of heart”
ln the Southi tho people there are "disloyal,"
and the only remedy in “in Manhood Baffrago
that, Is, in disfranchising all white men uud en
franchising ail negroes.—C/tkugo Timet.
Reverse ot Fortune,
The effects of the recent war in changing tile
fortunes and relations of many of our cittKetis,
says the New Orleans Jh'cayune. are brought
home to us every day. in many striking nnd even
romantic forms. A few days ago, in a case 1k--
forc one of our district courts, wliieh involved an
inquiry into the solvency of a security, one of
the witnesses stated tliht ho knew tiie security
was hopelessly insolvent before the war, where
upon tlio Judge remarked very sensibly ami
truly: "The fortunes- and positions ol many of
our iieople hail Im-cd reversed liy lira elfvcls of
tins war; many who before tho war were and
had liven for many years wealthy, were now
hopelessly insolvent, ami many who hail strug
gled for nearly their whale lives against poverty
and adverse fortune, were now in cusy and af
fluent circumstances.”
A distinguished attorney engaged in the case,
stated that lie could cite an Inslaucu within Ids
own experience, confirmatory of the Justice of
his honor’s remark, llo himself had been quite
easy and comfortable before the war; hut when
he relumed to the city without a dollar in Ids
jiockcts and applied to Ids.former rich clients to
pay some fees duo him, ho found that tlmy were
as poor as ho was; and the only person who
came lo Ills assistance and promptly placed him
in fluid* was a man whom lie liad known us an
insolvent for twenty years.

Decline of Religion in New England.—
The New York Independent complnins tlmt tlio

thing else could be expected. Tho clergymen of

the most shameful blasphemy. They are now

A letter received nt tlio Treasury Depart

that when the news reached there that gold hud

as soon as it is known that gold has got down to
180. The nchv seven-thirties, the letter ssys, arc
well received in the German markets, now tlmt
gold is declining.
