Gen. Forrest and Mayor Lofland—A
Scene.—After the adjournment of the Council
yesterday afternoon, a conversation occurred be-
t weeu General Forrest and Mayor Lofland. Our
intention was first directed to it from bearing
the General’s voice loud and emphatic—we bad
heard it before, and knew that it was but the
1-orient of the storm. The conversation was in
tuspecl to tho statement- made by the Mayor in
regard to the paying of bonds, General Forrest
insisting that Mayor Lofi-tnd bad uncanJidly
dodged tlie question, and where ho did not
dodge, hud made false statements. The Mayor
was silting down, and Forrest bad by this time
risen to his luct. The Mayor denied the soft im
peachment, which made ’General Forrest more
irate, and he denounced him iu language like
llie following: ‘‘You lied, and you kuntv it, you
perjured scoundrel," und turning to the assem
bled crowd of Aldermen and bystanders, he
paid " 1 denounce you as a puppy Hnd scoun
drel ; 1 place the brand upon you, nnd you have
to carry it." .Mayor Lofland’ sat still;’ we saw
deep excitement in his face, which was betrayed
by thu uurvomt twitcliings of the upper lip. We
beard not a word in answer, and General For-
rest walked away. This iu a truthful report ol
the scene, nnuglil extenuated or aught set down
