the etlivt' ot ilainp. The brain, heart and In-
t,..iiins lime been carefully embalmed and
nlaee.l in tlieir proper places inside of the body.
VI,e head alone is exposed to view. The face
si,nears veiv emaciated—an effect doubtless pro-
ll'nid partly by the Kutpcrnr’a loug tlcItneM
prior to liis execution, and partly by the process
ot cmbalnicnt. The end ol the noae, which had
Ik ciiii to deeav, lias hern so skillfully replaced
nitli wax that It appears perfectly uatural. The
artiiicial eves, which are o|ien, arc of a tonic-
what darker shade than the Emperor's. Thu
lavnliiu beard and long moustachea are well
preserved, except that along the edge* of the
|ip|K-r lip Hie hair was shorter than lie was ac
customed to wear it, and looks nibbed aud worn.
The hair on the hack ol the head is almost wholly
Mauling. the result ot the thefts ot It which are
known to have taken place at Queretaro. The
lower lip is thin and apparently decayed, or
shrunken in the process ot cmhalmcnl. The
Kinperor had the full projecting lower lip, the
"pocket-mouth" whic.li the Ilapsburgs inherit,
with the country of Tyrol, front their ancestress,
Meg I'ockct-mimili. who brought that territory
into tlieir lamilv. The retreating chin and pro
jecting upper teeth nre very nnlural. One ol the
i,,u,-i. on the lelt side of tlte face, is broken, hut
it istielieved to have been so in the Emperor's
lit,.time. The rest arc in good preservation.—
The hair ol the head living drawn hack, con
trary to the Kut|s ioi's custom, the forehead ap
pears more bald than it did ia his lifetime. The
skull is per',at, except the portion tnken out to
extract the bruin in embalming. This fragment
has Ilecu retained—that is, stolen liy one ol the
Mexican physicians who supcrinleuded the em
balming at tjuerclaro—so the Emperor’s physi
cian declared at the recent examination—and its
place lias been supplied with wood. The ears
being covered by the padding placed to secure
tlte body in its coffin, are not visible.
Opinions in the Admiral’s parly were very
varied as to the preservation ot the likeness.—
Some recognized it at once, while others thought
that, but tor their previously knowing that they
were to see the Emperor’s remains, they would
have been at tlrst unable to distinguish them, ex
cept ns those of u tall, spare man, ol Maximil
ian's height and general proportions. The body
lay on its hack, the face wholly without expres
sion, and turned upward, the arm, the bands and
test lying in n straight natural position, and the
varnish applied to the tace and to the hair, gave
both a much darker tint than the natural one,
especially to the luce. The disturbing influence
of that position of the body, and the change of
complexion gradually disappearing from their
minds, most of the parly tiually recognised the
preservation of the likeness, as tar perhaps as
was practicable in embalming. The body has
only a slight aromatic odor, aud is very carefully
secured from niotiou or damage from other
causes, in a massive coffin.
Beaautrul Story or ■ Princely Soy,
Charles X. of France, when a child, was one
day playing in an apartment of the palace, while
a peasant from Auvergne was busily employed
in scrubbing the floor. The latter, encouraged
by the gaycty and playfulness ol the young
Count, entered lamiliurly into conversation with
him, and, to amuse him, told him a »»*»ber of
diverting storing and anecdotal lBl iyji
r jjf» evident poverty, and for lire labor which
a* was obliged to undergo in order to obtain a
scanty livelihood.
“An!" said the man, “my poor wile and five
children otten go supperless to bed."
thpn. rf»nlii*d the Prinre. i
‘Well, then, replied the Prince, with tears in
his eyes, “you must let mu manage lor you. My
governor every month gives me some pockett
money, tor which, ufter all. I have no occasion,
since I want tor nothing. You shall take this
money and give it to your wile and children ;
but tie sure not to mention a word of the matter
to a living soul, or you will he tluely scolded.”
On leuviug the apartment, the honest depend
ent acquainted the governor of the young Prince
with the conversation that hail taken place.
The latter, after praising the servant highly
for his scrupulous integrity, desired him to accept
tlte money, aud to keep the ntfuir a protouud se
cret, adding that lie should have no cause to re
pent ot his discretion. At the end ol the month,
the Count d’Artois received his allowance as us
ual, and, watching the moment when be waaun
observed, hastily -slipped the whole sum into the
hands ot liis portege. On the same evenings
child's lottery was pnqioscd for the amusement
ol the young Princes by the governor, who had
pur|Misely distributed among the prizes such ob
jects as were most likely to tempt a boy of the
Count's age. Eueli ot his brothers eagerly haz-
urded his little store, hut the Count d'Atois kept
aloof from liis favorite amusement The gover
nor, feigning astonishment, at last demanded the
reasou of his unusual prudence; still no answer
from the Count. One ot the Princes, his brother,
next testified his surprise, and at length pressed
the young Count so hard that in a moment of
childish impaticure he exclaimed: “ This may
lie very well tor you, but what would you do if,
like me, you had a wife aud five children to rap
