SECOND DAT's PROCEEDINGS.
Tlie Association met at 10 o'clock, and was
opened with prayer hy Itev. S. Landrum, of Sa
vannah.
The regular order of business was resumed and
various reports were read and discussed.
Mr. Calvin, of Augusta, read a report on” Ge
ography,” which will be published.
’flie next essay read was "On the best method
<d preparing h*»ys tor College, in Latin and
t ireek.' It was written by Protestor W. H. Wil-
i. it, ot Mercer University; but be not being
present, Dr. If. If. T ucker rend it. The report
% pointed and practical, i nd its publication,
which will occur, will assuredly result beneficial
ly to the cause of education.
Dr. Sears having made sonic remarks on the
subject, the order ot business was suspended, and
•i motion made and carried, requesting Dr. 8. to
reduce Ids remarks to writing, that they might
be published w ith Hie proceedings.
The order of business was then resumed, nnd
Prof. .Sewartz, ol the Wesleyan Female College,
lead au interesting report on the “ Pronuncia
tion of Latin.”
Prof. Urouii, of the Htate University, then

After a few general remarks hy the members,

A very able and instructive ru|K>rt on the sub
ject ol " Normal Schools," giving some account
of their history in vurious foreign couutrics as
well as in tho dilfurent States of Hie Union, and
setting tortli their importance in au educational
system, ns constituting seminaries for training
mid qualifying teachers lor common schools, was
read hy Mr. U. Mallow. It was followed hy re
marks hy Mr. Ifillyer and by Dr. Smith, ol Ein-
iry College, upon the same tople.
A report upon the Juealot method of teaching
reading hy D. Swobo was rend hy Dr. Tucker,
Mr. Hwobe beiug absent. The main point ol
this system is to dispenae with tho spelling
bonk.
A report upiu the subject of “Matuial Labor
Schools" was read hy Col. 8. Pouclie. The re-
imrt referred briefly to the history of Bitch
schools, and accounted lor the failure hy the fuel
Hurt in the state ol society then existing popular
lavor did not properly foster such enterprises.—
The eircumatauces of Hie |M <»ple having changed
the propriety of their re-establishment was
urged.
Mr. Connor submitted a report, on Hie subject
ol "Primary Schools," recommending uniformi
ty m their establishment, and pointing out some
methods for conducting them, which gave risuto
inili'li discussion.
A resolution ollered hy Hie Committee looking
to the organization ol a Teacher's Institute in
connection with tliiH Association, was passed.
Many resolutions, principally relating to the
Association—Ihc appointment of committees to
report at inerting ol the next Association—were
adopted, and the Association adjourned, tine die,

The proceedings ol this meeting were exceed
•ugly interesting, ns might naturally be expected
from uii assemblage ol cultivated minds, all pre

perience In the use of your Improved Poudrette, pur
chased of you for this year's cotton crop, we would beg
leave to say that the present Besson has been one quite
nulavorable to the action of all fertilizers.
Several kinds of manures were used by ns, with the ex
ception of your Poudrette, with little or no effect to the
on.
Where the Pondrette wee need. It gave ns near hair a
bale more per acre, and caused the cotton to open much
earlier, and we would theretoro recommend tbu same as
a concentrated manure for tbe growth of cotton, ae well
as improvement to the soil.
