SYLLABUS.
Friend of my 'out. cnmr ,ip this bowl—
’Twill stnrt unwilling tear,:
An emblem fnir of woman's lip,
Loss sweet than it appears.
Its brilliant rays attract the pane,
Its beauties charm the eye;
Yet, ere the gls«s Itatli told the hour,
Its bubbles burst and die.
Mark, with wlmt care 'tis drest so rare,
In frothing pride arrayed:
Fancy portrays its nectarous sweets,
To please the taste displayed.
If in your mind a hope you find
'Tis such—delusive 's hope:
Expect no sweets—'tis all foots' day:
The nectar's made of .Soap,
OSCAR.

<V word of thine would soothe
The anguish of tny heart;
Its sorrows heal, its fit are restore,
With sweet, with magic art.
One word of thine would 'suage
Thenlirenay of my brain;
Would fill my soul with hope.
And hud) the voice of pain.
One word of thine would charm
Kadi care existence knows;
Would sweet enjoyment give,
And banish all my woes.
One word of thine would smooth
My spirit’s ruffled sea;
The how of promise bring,
With mirth, with.Joy and glee.
One word of kindness give me then.
Sines life aud hone am there;
Or sHent, willi forbidding mein,
O'envhetm me in despair.

THE GRAY HAIR.
Come let me pluck that silver hair
Which 'mid thy clust'ringcurls I see:
The with'ring type of time or care
Uath nothing, sure, to do with thee!
Yearsjmve not yet impaired the grace
That charmed me once, that chains me now;
And envy's self-love, cannot trace
Cue wrinkle on thy placid brow!
Thy features have not lost the bloom
That brightened them when first we met;
Nat—rays ol softest light illume
Thy unambitiousbeauty yet!
And if the passing clouds of Caro
Have cast their shadows o’er thy face,
They have but left triumphant, there
A holier charm—imore witching grace!
And if thy voice Imtli sunk a tone,
And amindi iiiorcsudiy than of yore,
It lias a sweetness, all its own,
Mctluuks I never murked before.
Thus young and Inir, and happy too—
It bliss indeed cun here be won
In spite of nil that Care can do;
In spite of nil that time has done.
Is yon white hair u boon of love,
. To then in milder mercy given?
A sign, a token from above,
To lead tby thoughts from earth to heaven?
To sjraok to thee of life’s decay;
icatity hastening to the tomb;
i that cannot fade away;
ioys that never lose their bloom?
