'Pleasures of a Tropical Climate.—Insects
are the'curse of tropical climates. The veto
rouge lays the foundation of a troinendous ul
cer. In a moment yon are covered with ticks.
Chigoes bury themselves in your flesh, and
hatch a large colony of young chigoes in a few
hours. . They will not live togeter, but every
chigoe sets up a separate ulcer, and has his
own private portion of pus. Flies get entry
into your mouth, into your eyes, into your
nose. You eat flies, drink flies, fthd breathe
flies. Lizards, cockatrices, and snakes, get
into the bed; ants eat up the books; scorpions
sting you ou the'foot; every thibg bites, stings,
or bruises ; every second of your existence you
are wounded by some species of animal life,
that nobody has ever seeh before, Except
Swammerdam and Meriam. An insect with
eleven legs is swimming in your tea cup : ; a'
nondescript, with nine wfngs, is struggling in
the small beer ; or a caterpillar, with several
dozen eyes in his belly,'is hastening over till;
bread and butter. All nature is alive, and
seems to be gathering all her .entomological
hosts to eat you up ns you are standing, out bf
your coat, waistcoat, and breeches. Such 'are
the tropics. All this reconciles us to our dows,
fogs, vapour, and drizzle; to otir apothecaries,
rushing about with gargfcs and tinctures ; to
our British constitutional coughs, sorb throats,
and swelled faces .—London Paper.

Last evening a gale commenced blowing
S. West, which continued for some hours with
great violence. Between 12 and 1 o’clock
this morning, the wind shifted to tho north
west, aud swept across the city with a violence
thutihrealned tremendous destruction. A new
brick front ITouse iii Stanton-strect was blown
entirely down: many chimneys wero blown
down, as on tho night of Duncan’s death ; and
the lead sheathing of the roofof a house in
the second ward, was rolled up. Wo learn
