that would shoot, and several old muskets, with

“From Mr. Reese's we went to Mr. Turner's,

on Monday morning. Heury Austin and Sam,
went to tho still, where finding Mr. Peebles, Aus

as we approached, tho family discovered us and

by the projection of the collar-cap from the house;
on my approach she ilcd, but was soon overtaken,

What wretches! This monster Will furnishes
deeds that would suit the pencil of Salvator Rosa.
One confessiou of Nat. Turner is important.
He was asked, “if ho knew of any extensive
or concerted plan. His answer was, 1 <ib not.—
Wheu I questioned him as to the insurrection in
North Carolina happening about tho same time,
he tl.-uicd any knowledge of it; ami when 1 look
cd him in the face as though I would search hi;
inmost thoughts, ho replied, “1 see, sir, you doubt
ny word; but enuyou not think the same ideas,
aud strange appearances about this time in tile
heavens might prompt others, as well as myself,
to this undertaking?'’ ’’
The pamphlet has otto defect—wo mean its
style. The confession of the culprit is given, ns
it were, from his own lips—(anil wheu read to
him, Im .admitted its statements to be correct)—
lint the language is far superior to what Nat.
Turner could h ive employed—Porttott...of it tre
oven eloquently and classically expressed. This
is calculated to cast some shade of dou t over tho
authenticity ot the narrative, aud to give the Ban
dit a character for intelligence which he do -< not
deserve, and ought uot to have received. .In ili
other respects, the confession appears faithful and
true. The whole pamphlet w deeply interesting!
It ought to warn tJarrotson and the other fanatics
of tho North how they meddle with these weak
wretches.

As to tho right of jurisdiction over these men
by the Governor of New Brunswick, and the
right of nrrosting them nt tho Madasvnska settle
ment, all will depend upon the situation of tho
boundary lino aud tho state of tho boundary ques
tion. It is alloged, and wo presume trufy, that
they resided and wore captured on this side of
the lino as defined by the King of Holland, tho’
of course on land in dispute between tho two
countries prior to that decision.
Such being the case, the authorities of Nesv
Brunswick, without auy great stretch of forbear
ance, might have waived for tho time tlteiV
claims tef jurisdiction,—the “conspiracy" being in
fact untiling more than a conspiracy to become
what the decision of the King of Holland makes
thorn, American citizens.
But is it not a fact, that tho State of Maine,
pending tho ratification of the decision by the
British and American governments, still exer
cises jurisdiction over the same territory as be
fore tho decision was made? If so, she cannot so
well complain that tho Government of Now
Brunswick does likewise.
