SAVANNAH,
Tuesday Evening, Nov. 5, 181
The brig Savannah-Packet, captain Jocelyn,'
<r.ip,ir. day* irons New-Yo/k, got up to Five-Fa
thom this morning. She brings accounts trotn
London, (via New-York) we are told, as late as
the 36 h September; but, being enable to ob
tain any papers, are unable to give particulars.
The king, we Icam vcibally, was stated to be
getting better. They cot. ained no other intel
ligence, that tvs could procure.
f The following note was received yesterday
morning, from the Post-master at Fayetteville,
(w. c.) by our Post-master. It is unpleasant to
complain; but the late frequent irregularities
too loudly demand it:—
“ Three mails were due this morning from
the north, and at last the stage has arrived,
without bringing any tiling—not even a port
manteau. 1 am consequently entirely without
a proper mail bug, to send to the southward
this trip—having for a week been sending two
portmanteaus to the northward every mail
night, without receiving dny in return ; and
when there will be a mail from that quarter,
God only knows.”
. Raleigh, October 25.
Freeman KHlingsworth, chatgcdwith coun-
ferfeiting dollars, has been apprehended in
Johnston county. The same person who was
mentioned' in our last, as having informed
ogainst Ciarke, of this county, discovered K.il-
lingaworth also. Sundry dies, coining imple
ments, ficc. were found in his possession.
He has been admitted to bail. We ate con
cerned to add, that this offender is a justice of
the peace, called himself a professor of rel gion,
«nd occasionally preached.
We arp concerned to hear that the town of
Newborn is at present visited with an alarming
■fever, which hus carried off many valuable citi
zens. Two cr three western waggoners, who
had approached the town with produce, arc jus>
returned here, and confiim rhe report. We
'liopethe agreeable change which has wi'liin a
few days taken place in the atmosphere, will
soon dissipate the disease.—Jla.iigh liegistcr.
•We had occasion, in our last, to statu that
owing to heavy rains, the mail stage had been
impeded in its couise. But on Tuesday last,
we experienced a more violent and incessant
storm ot rain than wc have had for several years,
which produced such a fresh in the wa'cr cours
es as to occasion much damage. Scarcely a
i::ill-datn or a bridge is left standing in the vi
cinity of this city ; and the crops of corn, cot-
ron, Ctc. in the low grounds, have been grca'ly
injured, and large quantities of fences swept
away. The effects of the storm have been so
general that it will be with difficulty that lum
ber and plank can be got to make good the re
pairs, or meal to supply the necessities of the
" city and neighborhood. The mail due from
the southward on Wednesday, did not arrive
till yesterday, the bridges over Swift and Wal
nut creeks having been carried away ; and the
northern stage, from the height of the water,
could not then go out. Indeed, we fear it will
be seme time before the stages can resume
their regular course.
We apprehend that the present obstruction
to travelling will prevent our state bark from
going into opeiation on the 5th of the ensuing
month, as intended—a quantity of the tmptes-
sions of the bank rote pla’es, which were ex
pected about the 16.h tnst. not having Leer,
yet received.—ib.
Our oldest inhabitants do not recollect a
greater and more incessant fall of rain, than
was witnessed in the fore [tart of the present
week. The Ibsscs sustained by the farmers
and others, in this vicinity, ate very considtv a-
ble. Capt. Thcophilus Hunter, had two tr.iils
on Walnut o'cek washed away, leaving sen re
ly a trace behind ; William Hill, on the same
creek, a saw and grist nuil, u.gether with foil-
<ier, corn, fences, Sea. swept aw.iy ^ Isshc Hun
ter’s saw and grist ini!!, on Crabtiee, shn-ed a
similar fate ; William Boylart had a bridge
carried away, 15 or 20 head of fa'ted hogs,
corn, tedder, hay, fences, fee. Joseph Gale's
paper mill-tlam broke, and his plantation other
wise injured. Walter Ratal’s mill was carried
away, and in it a quami'y of wheat. Colonel
poik, Na'iianiel Junes, Isaac Hurt'er, and
others having faints on the creek, have sustain
ed considerable losses in fencing, fodder, hay,
5tc. We have not heard from the river, but
expect that the damage i« ccnsic’et able. Ten
or fifteen bridges, over different water coutses
in this county, have been carried away, or da
maged so as to render them impassab’e. No
mail lion: the north has been received since
Tuesday, '.he 22d instant, nor do we expect
cne for several da vs.—Stir.
