~ |E Weather.—The gloomy and puvlal aspect of
tin vatlicr yesterday morning gave way to a burst
„i saiishlne at noon, followed by a bright and warm
dieruoou, ami a beautiful sunset. At the time of
writing there Is every prospect of another spell of
jine weather.’
Metroi'olitan Fire Company.—On Monday even
ing last a large meeting of this new branch of the
Fire Department was held at Fireman’s Hull. The
ohjecrol imp meeting was to make the necessary ar-
i uigemeuts for the reception of their new steam Are
engine, the “Francis S. Bartow,” now being built by
Wm. Jeffers, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The
Company also tendered a complimentary benefit to
their friend, Theodore Hamilton, one of the managers
«ji the Savannah Theatre, as a mark of acknowledg
ment 01 his own and Mr. Raymond’s generosity to
the Company. At the next meeting of the Metropo
litans they will probably invite our citizens who
cannot dn active duty at fires to become pay mem
bers u ; their flourishing organization.
ATLANTIC AND GlLF RAILROAD DEPOT.—Rapid
progress U being made upon the work of re-building
the depot or the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, and re
furnishing the road, under the supervision of Col.
John Screven, the President The depot will soon
again be one of the ornaments of the city and mark*
of our progress In business. The Company have re
ceived from the North three new locomotives, and
have also repaired a fourth one, which was partially
destroyed upon the evacuation of the city by the
Confederates. The macliine shops and other build
ings of the road are being rapidly rebuilt or repaired.
A large warehouse, three hundred feet In length and
fifty in width, Is under contract. We learn, also,
thatthe bridges between Savannah and the Alta-
maha are being rapidly rebuilt.
Theater—Benefit of Mb. Raymond.—The Mer
chant of Venice was performed last night to a
very fair house, and In a manner highly gratifying to
the andience. It is enough to say that the puts of
Shylockand Portia were sustained with the artistic
ability which characterizes the efforts of those emi
nent actorB, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Crisp. The princi
pal subordinate characters were well rendered by
Messrs. Hamilton, Wise, Loud and H Crisp, and Mre.
Boswell and Mrs. Hamilton.
To-night the enterprising manager and popular
comedian, Mr. Jno. T. Raymond, receives a compli
mentary benefit. The bill for the occasion is a good
one, but were It less attractive, the claims and merits
of the beneficiary could not fall to secure for him a
fall house. 'The friends of the drams, who must feel
their obligations to the present enterprising %nd
liberal managers of our theatre for the efforts tbay
have made to provide theatrical amusements of a
worthy character during the past season, will, we
feel confident, not lose the present opportunity of re
warding, In a substantial manner, one who has borne
bis fail share of the sacrifice and labor necessary to
that end.
ExaMINatic ss.—An examination was held at the
Court House yesterdsy, before Justices Levi 3. Rus
sell ami L. Connell, In case of the State vs. Patrick
Davis, on a charge of baying amt receiving stolen
Lunds knowing them to have been stolen. The pris
oner having proven that he was employed by certain
prisons to haul the stolen articles, which labor was
[jerformed in the day time, he was discharged.
The State vs. Win. H. Bryan. Murder, committed
& Richmond county. The accused was charged
wltji the murder of-young Carmichael. Their being
no testimony to warrant the committal of the ac-
. used he was discharged.
arrival of New York Steamships—The steam
ship Herman Livingston, Capt. Baker, from New
York on Saturday, 13th, arrived yesterday morning,
having made the quick trip of 80 hours.
The steamship Chase, Capt. Roath, trom New
York on Thursday, the 11th, arrived later In the day,
having experienced head winds and heavy sea.—

.distress, as reported in onr shipping intelligence.
The steamship San Salvador, Capt. Atkins, from
New York on Saturday. 13th, arrived last evening,
having a large number of passengers and a full
ir*Hght, A card from her pas-engers on her recent
stormy voyage appears in another column.
Street Puddlkbs.—Great complaint is made that
many street peddlers are offering for sale various de
scriptions of goods, having failed to pay license to
the Treasury of the city. It U the request of the City
Fathers flint Information be given us soon as possi
ble to the policemen, In order that the deUnquents
may be arrested. Thieving is, we believe, becoming
quite a brisk business In our city. The Immediate
arrest ot Itinerant peddlers may possibly decrease the
number of offenses In this line; for under the garb
of peddlers thieves visit the premises of our citizens,
-observe and lay their plans for the commission of
robberies.
Wc understand, upon Inquiry' at the Clerk of Cona-
cU’s office, that there have been but five licenses Is
sued since January 1st, all of whichbave expired.
We might suggest, also, that a movement on the
port of our citizens, tn the shape of a petition to
Council would at once meet with prompt attention
from our energetic Mayor and Board of Aldermen.

highest authority, that the findings and sentence in
his case have not yet been promulgated.

Colored Laborers —A singular leature is
now being exhibited in Columbus. Colored
men.are employed by planters to secure
them laborers, and the employee is paid so
much for each negro be procures. The suc
cess is good, tor almost every negro who
comes to Columbus appears anxious to make
a contract to work. Farmers Irora every
direction tell us that the negroes are goiug to
work mantully and that no difference can be
perceived now in the amount of labor they
accomplish and in the days when they were
slaves. This certainly is encouraging.—Co-
