L«*nlng her fair heed against the pine*.
Like some ffiint lily resting on tne waves,
~_™ cl SF wat9r w ^ere a white moon shines,
Idly while dreaming, either hand she laves.
^SL lia S efia c ^ eek » the green palmetto fans.
The blue-eyod vine her sighing lips has kissed,
The pitying rivers, from their reedy bands
Loosoning their tresses, fold her in their mist.
And over her the sobbing roses bend.
Dropping their tears upon her pallid face;
For her wan temples, with a tembling hand
The jasmine breaks her vase.
In vain from every sprouting screen around,
A sweet-voiced bird her plaintive love-song sings,
With the soft moonlight linked and interwound.
Rippling the air in bright harmonic rings.
A tender memory haunts her where she lies—
The beauteous Florida, the queen uncrowned.
And dims the light in her sweet mournful eyes,
Tnat see not moon, nor wave, nor aught around.
She feels again upon her boeom bare
The milky teeth of the young laughing com; *
Her Angers stray among the tangled hair,
Silken and white, of one yet later bom.
Above her, O ye fauns, bend branch and bough,
Shield her feir form 'gainst the chill blighting dew,
Pity her dolor, and on her pale brow
Wreathe your gray pearls of beaded mistletoe.
For, from the dusk of her sweet mournful eyee
That sec not wave, nor moon, nor aught around,
Kever shall full orb’d hope again arise
To shine on her, on Florida uncrowned.

I HE MILITARY INSURRECTION IN SPAIN.
The foreign news brought by the stoamsips from
New York contains the following concerning the pro
gress of the Spanish insurrection:
“A despatch from Madrid, of Jan. 12th, says:—The
latist official despatches state that the insurgents con
tinue to fly towards the Portuguese frontier, having
abandoned the high road in order to follow the moun
tain passes, where cavalry are only able to march in
single file. One of the five officers who hold a com
mand among the insurgents has surrendered to Gen.
Zaballa. Every day stragglers are coming in to the
royal troops. It is supposed thaA Gen. Prim intends
debouching at Tutavera de la Reyna, in order to cross
i-N ram ad ura, and thus make for the Portugese fron
tier; but this supposition is somewhat impaired by
the fact that the bridges and fords, both on the Tagus
snathe Guadiana, are in the bands of the royal
troops.
‘ A ic.cgram of January 13, says:—Yesterday the in-

and iorce him to take refuge In Portugal, but not to
attempt tn capture him.
“Madrid ha* oeen quiet during the last two days, and
the great uneasineea hitherto prevailing has subsided.
“A t*!»'gram from Bayonne, of January 13th, saya:-~
Letters Arum Madrid state that the Moderate Party
entertain hopes that Gen. Concha will shortly be in
trusted with the formation of a new Cabinet.
“The crowd of students who assembled at the Puer-

“ A feeling of uneasiness still prevails in Madred
and in tne provinces.

the next three days.*’
