A man named Ryan was charged with breaking
open drawers of Mr. Dixon, under the bluff. He said
that he waa employed as watchman in the place and
that there was nothing to steal in the place. The’ case
waa turned over to a magietiate for examination.
A married woman was then arraigned on th e
charge of disorderly conduct in Indian street, at one
o’clock yesterday morning. The policeman testified
that the woman’s husband had asked him to ar
rest her and he did so. The husband testified that
she and another married woman, were in the hab.t
of gettihg drunk, and that night before last she was in
that state and indulged In the pastime of breaking up-
the household goods; that she had only latety got ad
dicted to this bad practice, and that she procured the
liquor from a man who kept a little store in the neigh
borhood, but who had no license and merely sold the
liquor for the convenience of the women in the neigh
borhood.
Chief Anderson stated that not long ago, this same
woman had caused her husband to be arrested on the
charge of maltreating her, and went to the barrackB
to testify to the same ; that on examination he “found
the boot on the other leg ;’’ that instead of his beating
her, she was in the habit of getting drunk and abusing
him ; and that the husband is an industrious and hard
working man. He accordingly locked her up, where
she remained for some time but on the entreaty of
hjr husband and her promise to do better for the fu
ture she waa released.
After reprimanding both women for their repre
hensible conduct, the Mayor sentenced them to be
sent to jail or wash every window in the Exchange.
They preferred to do the latter, and at last accounts
they were getting ready for their work.
D. Ford waa charged with drunkenness and disor
derly conduct in the streets and also at the barracks.
The arresting officer stated that Ford wanted him to
arrest his wife, but that the neighbors stated it was he
himself who was making the disturbance, and they
wanted him arrested- The case being made against
him, he was sentenced to pay a fine of ten dollars and
to be confined in the barracks at hard labor ; to be
employed in removing the lumber and other rubbish
from oue side of the enclosure to another.
