Terrible Scene in a Menagerie.—An unprece
dented seen*? occurred at the Cirque Napoleon, Paria,
on the night of January 22, during the performance of
Mr. Batty, the successor of Van Amburg, who it now
exhibiting in Paris. The moment he entered the
wild beasts* cage the lioness was observed to be in a
terrible rage. The lions were also roaring and jump
ing about, and Mr. Batty seemed to have lost hi* usual
influence over them. The public, fearing to sec him
torn in pieces, cried “ Go out, go out! ’* Mr. Batty
took the advice, and cautiously withdrew, waikin L
backward. The cause of the extraordinary commo
tion in the cage was soon ascertained. A few minutes
before the -commencement of the performance the
Loneps had given birth to a cub, who was thought to
to be an only son. Tiie young lion was taken away
from her, and given to a bitch to suckle. But just as
Batty entered the cage the lioness unexpectedly pro
duced a second young one, and the lions wanted to eat
it—a propensity said to be very common with wild
beasts when in a state of captivity. The fury of the
lioness in defence pf her offspring, and tho ferocious
attitude of her companions in the cage, produced an
t lL: a ordinary panic among the spectators, and several
jading fainted. After a short pause Batty contrived to
separate the lioness from the cub, aud the latter,
about the size of a cat, was held up by the nape of the
ueck fur the inspection of the company.
A Warning for Herii Lingel.—Batty, an English
lion-tamer, came near losing his head, a short time
ago, while giving an exhibition in Paris. He placed
his head in the mouth of a lioness, at the same time
ii aiding his hands behind his back, when a convulsive
movement of the animal's jaws caused its teeth to in
flict deep wounds on each side of the man’s forehead,
from M-hich blood flowed profusely. A cry of horror
arose from the spectators, and numbers made a rush
to leave the building, but Batty, without losing* his
presence of mind, called for a pocket-handkerchief,
wiped the traces of the accident from his face, and then
firing a revolver to drive the animals from before the
door of the cage, quietly withdrew to get hi* wounds
dressed.

FROM THE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
Washington, January 1, 1864.
Gentlemen:—Having stated it verbally to you, I
huve no hesitation in writing the fact, that I exDeri-
en»d marked benefit, from yonr HoofUnd-a German
Bitters. During a long and tedions session of Con
gress, pressing and onerous duties nearly prostrated
me. A kind lriend suggested the nse of the preumn-
tlon I have named. I took Ms advice, and the reJhlt
was improvement of health, renewed energy, and
that particular relief I so much needed and obtecne i
Others may be similarly advantaged, if they desire to
be. Truly your triend,
THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
From Rev. W. D. Seigfrisd, Pastor of Twelth Baptltt
Church.
Philadelphia, December 26,1803.
Mrssrs. Jones & Evans,
GentlemenI have recently been laboring under
the distressing effects of indigestion, aocompnnleii by
'irostratiou olthe nervous system. Numerous ran-
es were recommended by lrfenda and some ol' them
tested, bnt without relief. Your Hooflland’s German
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and wboee favorable mention of the bitters in.
duced me also to try them. I most confess that i hail
an aversion to patent medicines, from the ‘•thousand
and one” quack “Bitters,” whose only aim seems t»
oe to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon
the community, in a sly way; and the tendency of
which, I fear, is to make many a.confirmsd drunkard.
Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal
preparation. Itook it With happy effect Its action
was not only upon the stomach, but upon the ner-
vous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feet that I
have derived great and permanent benefit trom the
use of a few bottle*. Very respectfullylyours,
