RAILROAD MATTERS.
The eleventh annual report of the Presi
dent and Directors of the Atlantic and Gulf
Rond submitted to the stockholders 1st
January, I860, a copy of which is before us,
is replete with narrative and statistics highly
interesting, not only to the parties immedi
ate'v interested, but to the community gen-
erally. It shows that the enterprising
' President and efficient Directory have ap
preciated fully the fact that an early restora
tion of the road was demanded, not merely
by the interests of the Company, but by the
necessities of commerce, which required the
earliest possible reopening of tbe communi
cation between Southern Georgia and the
city of Savannah. In regard to the extent of
tue damage sustained by the road from the
destructive operations of Gen- Sherman s
arrnv, it is stated by President Screven, that
the 1st of January, 1865, found the Company
;■ with 35 1-2 miles of railroad, with all the
station bouses and trunks within that dis
tance, and its general depot at Savannah al-
’ most entirely destroyed. He announces,
t 'litivr?vc-r, that its whole rolling stock bad
f b^s saved, excepting one disabled engine
. and a few cars, which could not be drawu
aw&tr before tbe arrival of the invading
Arnyf.
Tiie report states that tbe financial con-
1 diticii of the Company on the 1st of January,
. 13^3, was most satisfactory, but that tbe dts-
■ eolation of the Confederate Government in
April following, which was largely indebt
ed for transportation during the whole of the
previous year, greatly impoverished its re
sources, and caused an amount of embarrass-
meit: that paralyzed for a period tbe energies
of tfiose entrusted with the management of
i affairs.
A 1 the end of the war, say June 1st, 1165,
| the financial status of the Company was as
{pJpilijws:
/ .€if tiie whole amount of its liabilities,
! $61, i34 were due in Confederate funds ; of
th^iiemaiDder, $121,080 were due for cou
ppijs outstanding during the war, and $17,
waii due for one engine, machinery and other
supplies ordered at the North in the Fall of
I860, the amount for which could not be
remitted when due. -
v Setting aside the amount due in Confeder
ate cuuency, which has been already equit
ably settled, the floating debt of the Com
pany in June last, amounted in all to $138,-
080. To meet this sum, says the report, the
Company was wholly without cash, while its
resources, consisting of $72,000 of State 6
per cents., and 2,001 shares of its own capi
tal bto k returned, at their then market value,
amounted to $144,800. In addition the State
is indebted to the Company lor unpaid sub
scriptions in the sum of $150,000, payable in
cash or 6 per cent, bonds.
To meet the financial exigencies of the
Company in the work of reconstruction, tbe
Board of Directors, in Juiy last, authorized
a new i;sue of Company’s bonds, and em
powered the President to issue 7 per ceut.
bonds secured by a first mortgage on that
portion oi the road between Savannah and
Station No. 7, not to exceed $500,000, paya
ble in twenty years from 1st July, 1865.—
Owing to the want of confidence at that ear
ly period in the financial condition of the
South it was with great difficulty that the
President after persistent effort could realize
as much as $100,000 from a sale of a portion
of these bonds, which amount, with the
earnings of the road, has been sufficient to
mest demands to present date.
Additional motive power and rolling stock,
consisting of four new engines and fifty-five
box ca*-s, have been secured on advantageous
terms, together with a sufficient supply of
material for repairs and for the reconstruc
tion of damaged stock. In addition,250 tons
of rails, 108,000 lbs. of spikes, and 175,824
lbs. chains were ordered for rebuilding tbe
road between the little Ogeechee and the
Altamaba.
Messrs. Calahan & Co., of whose enter
prise the President speaks in complimentary
terms, coutracted to finish the work by tbe
first of January last, but were unable to do
so for reasons satisfactory to the directory.
It is confidently expected, however, that the
road will b3 finished and the cars running
tbrough by the first of April.
Attention is called to the fact already made
public, that the iron ou the Florida portion
of the Fiorida Branch Railroad has been
removed, which renders twenty-five and a
half miles of the Georgia division totally
valueless, and has broken the only railroad
connection between Georgia and the penin
sula State. The restoration of this connec
tion will be effected as soon as the money re
quired can be raised by subscription.
The proposed conhection between the road
Rnd^dg-water is pressed with much zeal
ami ablfili^’l^^^iJnsideahjm the ground
by tbe sufierintenStfBt; for the year ending
December 31, 1865, is $337,000; of which
$225,000 was received previous to tbe first of
June, and paid in Confederate money.
At a meeting of the stockholders, held
on Wednesday, the following gentlemen
were elected directors: Messrs. John Screven,
John Stoddard, William Duncan, Solomon
Cuiten, R. D. Arnold, Hiram Roberts, Charles
Green, E. C. Anderson, Henry D. Weed,
Win. H. Wiltberger, Wm. B. Hodgson, A. T.
McIntyre, B. F. Bruton, C. A. Curry, J. W,
Spain.
We learn that Col. John Screven was yes
terday re-elected president of the company.
Mr. Gasper Fulton has resigned his posi
tion as general superintendent.
The Fehiaks.—The Washington Globe hae a very
■harp article unpon “the hostile preparations of the
Fenians within oar borders against the territorie^of a
nation with which we area! peace." There is danger, it
thinks, not that the Fenians can injure Great Britain,
but that these unfriendly movements may embroil the
United States with Great Britain by an invasion of
Canada. We quote:
“Canada is easy to reach and not hard to conquer,
temporarily at least ; -end besides, there is so much
division in the Fenian tanka that the leaders see they
must do something toon, or the whole conspiracy will
drop to pieces.
“We had better keep onr skirts clear of any infringe
ment of the principles of neutrality in disputes be
tween a friendly power and its subjects, else we shall
stand on very weak ground in our against Great
Britain for like infringements by her people and Gov
ernment during our late civil war. Let us stop this
Fenian foolishness if we wish indemnity for the depre
dations of ths Alabama."
For a time the Fenian movement for the achieve
ment of Irish independence was winked at, if not
openly encouraged by politicians who desired to con
ciliate the Irish element in this country. It is plain to
be seen, however, that aa tbe brotherhood extends its
organization, or daily beoomea more formidable for
the accomplishment of practical rosnlts, their profess
ed friends are giving them the cold shoulder. Wha t
was st first spoken of as a patrioiie movement is now
called a “conspiracy," "Fenian foolishnees;" that
should be Btopped. Is not the re-action too late ? r">n
this Fenian foolishness be atop epd 7

“No matter, dear reader, what you see in the papers;
Jeff. Davis won't have a military trial, and he won't be

pardoned. Though uo card player, ‘we speak by the

The National Intelligoncer, referring to the late bru
tal speech of Thid. Stevens, on the negro equality
amendment to the Constitution, thus characterizes
the man: "In so far as pretense of argument is con
cerned, cr dignity of parliamentarianism, or decency
of expression, or respect of constitutional law, or

tended honor, or of Imagined human qualities, Mr.
