Amateur Prime Fighting.
Yenterday afternoon in our meandering* about the
wharves, we were an unwilling spectator of a couple
of fights. The first was that of two boys of African
extraction, one somewhat lighter in color than hi*
antagonist For a time they appeared to be in earnest
in the matter and went at it with true artistic skill; they
countered and cross-countered, and finally closed; but
as they merely tried to hold each other’s hands, there
was no blood. Becoming tired they stopped for-wind'
and when time was called neither of them seemed
anxious to begin the second round, and contented them
selves with calling each other hard names. Quite
crowd of persons congregated to witness it. though
no one seemed inclined to put a stop to the proceed
ings, and after waiting some time without any resalt
the parties separated and the crowd dispersed.
Further along and just below the cotton press
noticed a somewhat more spirited contest between two
white men, who for some time pummelled oue another
after a rather rude fashion. One man was somewhat
larger than the other, but the smaller one seemed
be put up on the Tom Sayers’ plan, and, though taking
a good deal of punishment, he never appeared to lose
his wind, and waited his time until he could plant his
blows with telling effect. The larger nun got a “sock
dollager” home on the smaller one’s right peeper,
which had the effect of closing it up, when he got one
home on his antagonist, drawing the first blood. They
came to time again, when the larger one got in again
on the proboscis of the smaller one, causing the claret
to fly very freely. They then closed, and the smaller
man seemed to have the best of the larger one, when
a friend interfered and separated them, in doing which
the larger one got the advantage and visited the head
of his antagonist with severe punishment. Got sepa-
rated, but closed again immediately; the small one be
ing the toughest and quickest, gained the fall and got
the other under. The larger one being somewhat
heavier, however, rolled him over and got on top,
when he commenced punishing him again. By some
means the small one got the first digit of his antago
nist's right maul between his ivories, and his jaws be
ing pretty strong, he came near severing it from the
hand, when the latter cried out. Friends now inter
fered and separated the parties. The smaller one seem
ed very anxious to renew the contest, but the other
man’s hand being slightly disabled, his friends threw
up the sponge and took him away.
Although these fights both lasted some ten or fifteen
minutes, there was not a guardian of the peace about,
and the pugilists took their own time, outsiders not
caring to interfere. We did not learn whether any
thing wes won or lost on either of these occasions, but
judge there was not.
Police Matters.
On Saturday there were a large number of cases
before His Honor Mayor Anderson. The first was
that oi two boys who had been arrested for creating
disturbance in front of the Circus, and afterwards
resisting officers in discharge of their .duties. It ap
pears that one of these boys not having the necessary
funds to enter the Circus and see the horse “January
or take a ride on the mule “Timothy,” wished to dis
pose of a Barlow knife to make a raise, when one of
the officers wanted to know if he had a license to ped
die. The larger boy thought the smaller one had
right to sell a knife for fifty cents without being com
pelli d tx take out a license of an hundred dollars, and
told the officer so, but the latter told the boy to go
about his business, which he didn't, when he arrested
him and another officer arrested the other one. One
or two men who witnessed the transaction stated that
the boys were not making any disturbance, and that
the officers did not exhibit their badges of office,
the way to the barracks one of the boys resisted the
officer, and as he stated, attempted to strike him with
a piece of rock. The evidence being insufficient, the
Mayor dismissed one of them and confined the other
for a short time.
The next case was that of a citizen charged with in
terfering and resisting an officer in the discharge of
his duty at the fire on Friday evening last. There is
an ordinance of the city which gives to the police and
firemen the right to press any citizen and compel them
to assist in dragging the trucks or hose-carts to a fire
or assist in saving property in danger of destruction
by fire. The fire of Friday promised at one time to
be an extensive one, and several citizens were making
strenuous exertions to save all the property possible.
Alderman Gue was conspicuous among others in this
praiseworthy work, and there being a large number
of lookers on, both black and white, he appealed to
the crowd several times to assist in rolling the cotton
out of the way after it was thrown from the store, but
his appeals not being heeded he demanded of the
police to enforce the ordinance and impress men
which they partially did. Among others impressed
was a negro who persistently resisted, and the Chief
ordered him conveyed to the barracks. Upon the way
the prisoner met a white man and appealed to him to
release him. He did so and brought the negro back
to the fire. The Chief and Lieut. Wray testified that
this man was very insolent to them and a great crowd
collecting they ordered him to be quiet, but persisting
in abusing them he was ordered under arrest. Upon
being questioned as to what hqAad to say, he stated
that he merely wanted to recognize the negro and pre-
yeut his going to the barracks, and when he was
asked what the negro had done he was answered
curtly, which provoked him and made him resent it.
After hearing all the evidence, the Mayor caused the
section of the ordinance in relation to this matter to
be read, and, administering a reproof, fined him in
the sum of thirty dollars, the extreme penalty of the
law. The defendant then making some remarks, his
Honor fined him ten dollars additional, and, on his
still insisting on talking, the Mayor caused him to be
brought before the bar and state what he had said<
when he committed him to jail for contempt of court.
A man named Sullivan was charged with drunken
ness and lying in the streets in a beastly state of in
toxicatlon. He asked to be “let up” this time, prom
ising that he would not repeat the offence, but he was
fined two dollars, his Honor remarking that he would
have imposed a heavier penalty” but for the fact of his
having been confined all night in the barracks, which,
owing to the severe cold of Friday night, was a pretty
severe punishment of itself. This is the same man
who was before the Court in the early part of the week
on the charge of having taken a box of candy from a
dray, and who was turned over to a magistrate, but
•owing to the unwillingness of the prosecution to
give bonds to appear against him, was discharged from
custody.
Two men were charged with fighting in ihe strei.*,
but from the evidence of the witnesses, it appearing
that one of them was not in fault, he was discharged,
and the other one, was fined five dollars.
A German sailor was charged with being drunk, and
having been confined all night in the barracks, was
fined two dollars.
Two countrymen were arrested on Saturday m om
ul taken before his Honor, charged with fighting
e market, but, from the evidence it appeared
tlu*> were friends, and it was only a boyish, friendly
lig.M that there was no malice nor no intention of in-
■ \i y to one another. They were fined the costs of
< in :, and discharged.
