SAVANNAH, MONDAY MARCH 5, 1866.
[Fot the Savannah Herald.]
THE “FUKIM MASQUEUAUE BALL,/
L'V
Our eyes beheld on Thursday night
A scene which pleased the critic's sight,
Beauty and fashion thronged the hall
To tviuless the "Purim Masquerade Hall.
The “Harmonie" for this grand ball
Had decked with taste SL Andrew's Hall,
“Merry Purim" in green stood bold at the door
Welcoming every new comer to the well waxed floor.
The hour approaching the Maskers appear^
In various costumes, sentimental and queer.
Parents, children, sister and brother,
So completely disguised not knowing each other.
Flower girls, waiting maids in all sorts of ttgures,
Kings, queens and courtiers accompanied by niggers,
■nin e silent poor nuns are next seen to pass.
Probably thinking over what they had heard at the
mass.
A figure of Joseph from Egypt returned,
Highly pleased with the boon of liberty earned;
Rebecca with pitcher in hand at the well
Is seen promenading with a crown-headed swell.
Next a contraband’s seen cutting antics and capers
llis business is "boot-black and selling newspapers;
That beautiful figure now appearing in sight.
Is a representation of the queen of the night.
A sister of mercy dressed hah black and half white,
Represents life with its sorrows and pleasures so
bright;
Savannah's gas company comes in for its share.
They would give us more light, had they seen them
selves there.
The Bureau oi Freeedmeu (uu harm here is meant.)
Without sending their delegate, couldnot rcstcontent;
Their representative seemed to behave himself well,
With a single exception, ringing a horrid old bell.
Many others of merit graced this masquerade hall,
But time does not allow a description of all;
Nuilice it to say t’was a splendid affair,
The equal of which is not seen everywhere.
A Conspiracy to Depose tlic President.
.Many who have no access to nor communication
with political managers at Washington have wondered
at the great importance attatched to an apparently in
significant resolution that was driven through tho
House of Representatives last week, by Thad. Stevens,
with railroad speed. The National Intelligencer if
^. ^xesterday, explains as follows ;
or JBftwniect exists lor the removal of Andrew Jolm-
fc the office of President of the United States.
do not say that it has been do
these bad men. But that it ex
men of mind, of will, of iuflu-
sial station, there is no doubt.
ard such a result must be, of
iretext. This would he fittingly
easure passed already by the
ng by resolution of Congress,
i N<5rth and West from the South. We
insert here the resolution:
Itceoteed, By the House of Representatives, [the
Senate concurring.) That in order to close tlic agita
tion upon a question which seems likely to disturb
the action of the government, as well as to quiet the
uncertainty which exists in the minds of the people
of the eleven States which have been declared in in
surrection, no Senator or Representative shall bo ad
mitted into either branch of Congress from any of
said Staled till Congress shall have declared such
States entitled to representation.”
Now, let us consider—
“ The President, in his recent annual message, gave
Congress, as required by the Constitution, informa
tion of the state of the Union, and now stands await
ing. as the executive of the laws, the action of the
legislature. The national Legislature Is to declare a
part ol' the Union out of constitutional relations with
the remainder, a"nd proceed to legislate for it as an alien
territory. The President may shortly issue a procla
mation declaring that the constitutional relations are
stored between the States and the general government.
Thu President must execute the laws of the Union,
and preserve, protect and defend the constitution of
the United States. But he, as the executive, is neces
sarily the judge of obstruction to the execution of the
laws, its measure, quality and tendency; and the ques
tion is, whether, if he meets no resistance to the laws
of the Union, there is any other power to declare a
state of insurgency, contumacy or abnormal relation
between people and government ? And if laws be pnt
. ou the statute book declaring the fact of a state of
popular coil turnkey, how are they to be carried into
executive effect by a magistrate who makes the cum-
peti nt decision that there is no subject matter for
them i Upon such a conflict an impeachment would
be essayed, and the matter tried amid unspeakable
calamities.’
The Opening Ceremony of the British Parlia
ment.—The Prince and Princess of Wales—the Prince
in the full uniform of a general officer, and the Prin
cess tastefully attired in a dress of white tulle, trim
med with black lace, wearing a tiara of diamonds and
a long flowing veil of white gauze—entered side by
side. At two o’clock precisely Black Rod made a sig
nal to the Lord Chancellor, at which the whole assem
bly rose. In less than six minutes the door to the
right of the throne was flung open, and
preceded by a long train of halberdiers,
bnffetiers and other officials, entered the
Majesty of England. Her Majesty was attired in half
mourning, and walked with Blow steps to the throne,
followed by the great officers of State—the Marquis of
Landsdowue, bearing the crown upon a cushion; the
Duke of Argyle, holding the Sword of State; the Mar
quis of Winchester, supporting the Cap of Mainten
ance, and several other noMes performing their ap
pointed functions. Her Majesty stopped for an in
stant at the foot of the steps to shake hands with the
Princess of Wales, who in common with the whole as
semblage, had risen on her entrance. The Queen wore
a black—some said a deep purple—velvet robe,
which, whether it were purple or black, looked
intensely black in the dim light of the chamber, trim
med with white minive, and a white lace cap a la Ma
rie Stuart, to the portraits of which unfortunate lady
she bore in this attire a remarkable similitude.—
Aronud her neck she wore a collar of brilliants and
over her breast the blue riband of the Order of the
< iarter. Other ornaments she had none, and looked in
tins simple and highly becoming costume every inch
a Queen," and far more picturesque and regal than if
she had worn the royal robes that had become so dis
tasteful to her. During the interval that elapsed be
tween the summons of the Commons and the reply
the Queen pat silent and motionless, with her eyes
fixed upon the ground. She seemed to take no heed
of the brilliant assemblage around her, but to be whol
ly absorbed in melancholy meditation. Even when
the Commons rushed hclter skelter, like a mob of
schoolboys, to the bar, with pushings and strivings
unseemly to witness among gentlemen, bnt which
seem to be considered an essential part of the day’s
performances, her Majesty took no notice of the inter
ruption, and never once lifted her gaze from the
ground.—Loudon Times,
The citizens of Randolph county (as we learn from
the Americas Republican) held a meeting at Cuthkert
on the iilstinst., to make arrangements for the es
tablishment at that place of a cotton factory, for the
manufacture of prints, bleached shirting, sheeting,
he., and aboard of commissioners was appointed to
procure subscriptions. It was determined to raise
$150,000 for that purpose.
This is the right way to go to work- Whatever ex
cuse there might have been for devoting all the labor
and capital of the country to the culture of cotton, un
der the old system, it will be plainly suicidal now.
Let us both cultivate the raw material and then manu
facture it. Hi this way, and this only, can we have an
important agency in graduating the supply to the de
mand ; oml thus only can we diversify our industry
and multiply^our means of prosperity to the extent
lh it will make m truly a self-sustaining and progres
sive people.L-Ooft/mhwff Enquirer.
Tennessee.—Another scene of disorder has attend
ed the attempt of the present Legislature of Tennes
see to dlRfraueliise the majority of the people of the
Eta to. It being evident that the majority of the Leg
islature intended to pass the new ' 1 franchise hill,”
the minority at first resorted to the rare parliamentary
expedient of absenting themselves when the vote wu
called and leaving the House without a quorum This
was practised on one or two occasions. But on the
23d, a number of the minority members, disliking a
persistence in this course, and still determined to do
all in their power to defeat the bill, resigned ther seats
Their course will probably be followed by others —
But we presume that the supporters of the bill will
eventually muster their whole force, count a clear
working majority, and pass the till
