If there w*. * Iceming tack of spirit ii) the rend*
ing of II Trovatore on Monday evening, with a correa-
ponding absence of euthuaiaam on the part of the
diencc, such was not the case last night, when the
; mlrable style, holding the delighted attention of the
audienoe throughout and frequently eliciting out.
bursts of rapturous applause. It may be that the light
and sprightly composition of Flotow is more within
the compaaa oftbe tronpe than the more grand and
massive creation of Verdi, which requires the aids cf
full chorus and all the paraphernalia of the lyric stage
to give it effect; or it may be that the former is bet
ter adapted to the general comprehension and appre-
elation of our public, whose acquaintance with the
grand opera is comparatively limited. Be that as it
may, certain it is that the performance last night was
received with more general satisfaction, more earnest
enthusiasm than that of the previous evening.
Me have not tune at this late hour to particularize
the passages of thiB beautiful opera that pleased us
most, and must content ourselves with only a general
expression of our admiration for the performances as
a whole, the interest of the piece ia centred iu only
four characters. Lady Henrietta, by Mile. Cauiasa (so
prano); Nancy, by Mme. Strakosck (contralto); Lionel
by Signor Errani (tenor); and Flauket, by Signor Su-
suii (basso); whose fine vocal abilities were happily
combined in producing the most pleasing general ef
fect, while thu ,'otC of each abounds in gems of musi
cal composition which even less accomplished artists
would scarcely fail to render effective. Mile. Canissa,
who male her hrst appearance last evening, possesses
a very sweet voice of not very remarkable scope or
power, but which she controls so artistically
render it not only equal to the requirements of the
scale of her part, but to win the admiring sympathy
of her audience. With a very pleaaing face and grace
ful form shs is also an accomplished actress.
Madame Strmkosch was more than ever at ease in the
character of the sprightly and coquetish Nancy, and
acted and sang with a spirit and zest that at times
excited the enthusiasm of the audience which more
than once found utterance in hearty encores. Signor
Susini possesses a rich bass voice, and la an accom
plished vocalist and actor, and was especially happy in
rendering the buffo part of his role. Signor Errani
led nothing to be desired either in his ringing 0 r act-
ing.
To-night will be given Bellini’s Grand Opera of
Norma.

The following is the synopsis of the plot of the
Ul)vetlo:
‘•The Romans having effected the subjugation of
Gaul, committed tlie government of the conquered
province to Pollio, a Pro-Consul, who became ena
mored of Norma, daughter of the Arch-druid (Druid-
ism being at that time ihe religion of the country),
who was regarded by the superstitious multitude as
the unerring oracle through whom the deity, Irmin-
sul, condescended to convey to his votaries his divine
decree. Norma having been secretly united to Pollio,
the Roman Governor, the consequence was the birth
of two children, which circumstances she keeps secret
from all except Cloulde.
Pollio afterwards deserts Norma, and transfer his af
fections to Adalgisa, a young Priestess of the Temple
of Irminsul, who permits a similar passion to kindle
in her bosom for the faithless Roman, who, after much
persuasion succeeds in gaining her consent to aban
don the Temple, and fly wdth him to Rome. Remorse,
however, soon takes possession of her brea9t, and in
her agony she resolves to reveal all to Norms, who is
already laboring uuder the influence of slighted love.
Pollio makes his appearance at the instant that Adal-
gisa ia relating the story to Norma, whose anger is
transformed into the wildest fury, on being informed
by Adalgisa that he is the corruptor of her youthful
heart, and she bitterly reproaches Pollio forhla infi
delity and baseness.
Norma is with her children, the former still under
the influence of rage and bent on their destruction,
which she is on the point of accomplishing, when the
full tide of maternal feeling rushes into her heart and
arrests her uplifted arm. She next resolves to destroy
herself, and, as a preliminary step, requests Adalgisa
to take charge of her children, who, moved by her
distress, endeavors to allay her perturbation and prom
ises to persuade Pollio to return to her. In antici
pation of her success, Norma becomes more tranquil-
ized and indulges hopes of brighter days. The lllu
sion is of short duration. (Jlotilde soon after informs
her that Adalgisa has been unsuccessful, and that the
Roman persists in his determination to possess her.
Intelligence soon after arrives that a Roman has been
discovered in a certain part of the Temple, exclusive
ly appropriated to the use of the Virgins, who, on be
ing introduced, proves to be Pollio.
Another scene of recrimination ensues between him
and Norma, when she threatens the life of Adalgisa.
Pollio pleads for her, but the other is inexorable, aud
orders the pile to be prepared, and, ou the name of
the victim being demanded, she publicly announces
herself. All present are 9truck with horror and
aina/ciuent, anxious to know the nature of her crime;
this she reveals to lier father, by informing him that
she is a mother. Pollio's tir9t passion rekindles in hia
breast at this, her devotion, and he gladly ascends the
pile with her, after she has recommended her children
and Clotilde to the care of her father.

A driver of an expraas wagon was fined ten dollars
for the same offence, It appearing that he had driven
through the trees for some distance.
The owner of a dray was' fined two dollars for the
offence of one of his draymen, and the Mayor told him
he had better deduct the fine from the boy’s wages in
order to make him more careful in future.
Another individual was fined five dollars for driving
an omnibus through the trees.
A woman named Mr*. O’Donnell was charged with
keeping a disorderly house in Battle Bow, near West
Broad street Upon being called whe did not appear,
when one of the sergeants and a policeman testified
to the tact of there befog fighting and noise in her
house from twelve o’clock Monday night until near
two o’clock in the morning. Mayor Anderson then
ordered her to be fined ten dollars for keeping a dis
orderly house and ten dollars for her non-appearance
at court and ordered her arretted and brought to the
Mayor's office.
A man keeping a photograph establishment was
charged with violating ordinance by not taking out the
requisite license. Upon a private hearing lie was lined

An individual was arraigned for violation of city or-
djiance by selling gas burners without liaviug taken
oat the necessary license. It was testified that he had
p it the burners up iu several places in the city. The
d> fondant stated that he did not think he was required
to take out a license, ms his business did not come un
der the head of peddling. He wanted to introduce his
business and the putting them on was a mere me
chanical operation, and buyers only paid him as they
would any other mechanic. In answer to a question
of Mayor Anderson he stated that he intended to re
main iu the city and would like to contract with the
Gas Company to furnish them with these burners
also to supply stores and dwellings. Mayor Anderson
after hearing his statement, ordered hi™ to pav a fine
of tan dollars and to take out his license immediately.
Dr. Bly-’s Anatom leal Ball and Socket
Jointed Lug.
As there exists at present a great demand for artifl
ctal limbs, we would refer our readers to the advertise
ment in another column of Dr. Bly’s Anatomical leg.
It is made without iron or steel springs in the joints,
is extremely light, and works upon the same princi
pies ss the natural limb, possessing all its adaptabil
ity in motions, and thus differs from almost all other
artificial limbs. The joints in most othera move
forward and backward only, while this has the power
of lateral motion, so that if the leg should extend out-
ward or obliquely, or the foot should strike a pebble
it will adapt itaeil to the angle precirely as in the na
tural leg and feet. It is certainly one of the best
limbs we have ever seen and will afford comfort to
any one compelled by the misfortune of war or by ac
cident to need such a help. Mr. Bly -• ■** he aecn to

Fired men's Court.
Judge Pollard disposed of quite a number of eases
iu this court yesterday. A uegro uamed Alex. Bailey
was charged with the larceuy of a quantity of shoes,
and the evidence being positive, he was sentenced to
fourteen days hard labor on the stre.-ts with ball and
chain appendage.
A uegro named Thomas Brooks, charged with hav
ing a bag of oats iu possession which bad been stolen
was arraigned, and after hearing the testimony Judge
Pollard sentenced him to one week’s hard labor iu the
chain gang.
Another negro, named Henry Johnson, was charged
with the larceny of clothing. He was brought into
court, carry ing the remains of a coat which he had
stolen, aud which had been cut up perhaps to make
jackets or pantalooii3 for some of his friends’ children-
He plead guilty to the charge, and the Judge turned
the case over to the military commission.
1’our negro men were arraigned on the charge of
cutting timber from the obstructions at Macky’s Point.
II appiears that the negroes cut the timber off as low
as they could at low water, in order to obtmiu all the
wood possible, and consequently at high water, this
being a passage for vessels they were liable to get on
the wrecks, and at low water would thump on the
stumps aud probably kuock holes in their bottoms.
The negroes plead guilty to the charge, but as the
Judge thought they did not commit the act from mal
ice, he fined them each ten dollars an,l costs of court,
promising that if they were ever caught in this aet
again he wonld deal with them more severely.
A negro boy named James Adams was charged with
attempting to shoot his father. From the evidence
it appeared that the boy was sitting at tabic and a re
volver lolling from bis pocket, some one twitted him
with wishing to show off, when he returned som e
saucy answer and his fother slapped his face, which
be resented, and the father seizing a broom handle
rau him to the door, when he turned and fired at him.
He was sentenced to two weeks’ hard labor in the
chain gang, and tho pistol ordered to be returned to
tho father, but at tho suggestion of counsel, that tho
lather had one fire-arm already, which was certainly
enough to defend himself with, the Judge concluded
to retain it
The case of M. H. McAllister, executor of the estate
of Judge McAllister, deceased, against a negro woman
for ground rent of a lot on Bryan street, near Was
Broad, was on trial, and some nine points of law were
raised by Col. Stone, counsel for defendant, which
were read by Mr. Hesseltine, counsel for the plaintiff
The case was somewhat interesting, and caused some
wither amusing cross-tiring from counsel, it was con
tinned until to-dsy at twelve o'clock.

An ordinance was passed by Council some time ago
aud published according to low, prohibiting vehicles
from being driven through the rows of trees which
line some of our throughfarss, and stthrmpt. the at

has been in a measure disregarded, and bn Friday last
strict orders were leaned to foe police, and officers
stationed at particular points, especially an tho Bay,
to put a stop to foe practice, by reporting all cases of
refusal to obey the law. Accordingly yesterday morn
ing several of our citizens were summoned before
His Honor for a breach of.foe ordinance.
The first case called was that of one of our mer

of the fact, th* gentleman abased him. The defend-

was violating the city ordinance he told him he would
not do so again, noYhad hesfooe; hut he had no ZacoL

then fined him In m of tan dollars.
Another man, clarged with, the nape offence,
plead Ignorance of foe law, and was fined three dol

In the case of one of our merchants, who bad been
charged with foe same, it appeared that be had mss*-
ly used that path because be could not get through the
thoroughfare. He said he kjiew foe law thoroughly,
thought it a good one/and had tried to respect ii He
had no knowledge of the affair, bnt if he was guilty It
must have been unavoidable. The Mayor dismissed
this case.
