The Savannah Daily Heral4
SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY MARCH 7. 18G6.
[For the Savannah Heuald.]
A BRIDAL WISH.
BY A. M. M.
Bend softly down, oh skies of gloom,
Henil sweetly, softly, down I pray.
With more then orient summer bloom,
Over the gentle bride to-U»y.
Oft tears have dimmed the starry eyes,
Oft has her heart been like to break.
And I ask thee, mournful skies,
To smile down softly, for her sake.
She leaves to-day the hill-tope grand.
The vales that saw her infant years,
She seeks the sonny southern land,
A bride, whose smiles beam thro' her tears.
To-day she gives the last embrace,
To loving Ups the dinging kiaa.
The parting on her lovely face.
Has dimmed the glow of happiness.
Thou kuoweat too, oh skies of gloom,
That in the churchyard cold and gray.
This bride hath lain her check of bloom
Against the cold damp sod to pray.
Thou knowest the eyes that on her shone.
Illumined by affections light,
Are quenched there, and a brother’s tone
Hushed in the tomb’s uupitying night.
Still, when from this dear spot she roam.
Amid new scenes, "all rich and strange.
Oft buckward to her early home,
Will thought and busy memory range."
In fancy by the burial shrine,
Or lingering in the house of prayer,
Or o’er her sire at even time,
Soft smoothing back his changing hair.
Bend softly down, oh skies of gloom,
O’er her in bridal robes arrayed,
And shed a more than orient bloom,
O’er the spot where he is laid.
Kind angels guard her gentlo head.
And bid the sunshine and the showers,
Remember hint, the dear one dead.
And wreathe his resting place with flowers.
LETTER EHOH THE STATE CAPITAL.
Milledgkvim.e. Feb. Mill, I860.
EniToit Herald: The time rapidly approaches for
the adjournment of the Oeneral Assembly of Georgia.
Both houses have agreed to au adjournment on the
13th of March; yet it ia thought that the termination
of the labors of the session may be reached a few days
earlier—certain it is that it will not bo protracted b< -
yond that time. Afternoon sessions are held by each
house, the prohibition of the introduction of new
matter has been prohibited by each house. Night ses
sions and five minutes speeches will soon be the order
of the day, and above all the spirit of restlessness
among the members has increased to such an extent
that it wilt sikiu defy all powers to keep them down to
business.
To reflecting men this session must appear extraor
dinary and important. A new and hitherto uutried
field has presented itself for legislation, the members
themselves h3vc been new and inexperienced, and the
issues presented have been of the gravest character,
it will be no wonder if in some important particulais
the enactments of the present session should prove
limlty and have to l>e reversed at the next session.—
But all must accord to the members honesty of pur
pose, and a considerable degree of ability. Let the
people look with charity upon any failure that may
have occurred.
The bill for the relief of the hanks has passed the
t*i late by the small majority of two votes. The more
th$ wisftp&w&a tiiscuesed the more sympathy was
evoked for these Institutions; and as the vote has
gone contrary to my ex^dfebtions in the Senate, it is
l«*ei*te,Im#i.be toQmpii.. regard to its fate in the
Houe*.wjiep- it dual action in that body.
A thorough discubHionorthe subject in the House
may make quite as material changes there, as 1 know
it to have matlo in the Senate. As the provisions of
the bill passed on yesterday have already been made
public through your paper it is hardly necessary to re
vert to them again.
The death of Gen. John K. Jackson of Augusta,
while at this place, was universally lamented. This
gentleman by the urbanity of hia manners and his
conspicuous .ability and gallantry in the days of the
Confederacy, his exalted patriotism and character a.* a
gentleman had won for himself many friends. He
wna confined to his bed about ten days with pneumo
nia. His wife had been telegraphed at Augusta and
reached here several days before the General died.
The bill to confer additional powers on the City
Judge of Savannah, which originated in the Senate,
has, through the watchfulness of your representatives
been brought to a vote in the House, and will doubt
less receive the approval of his Excellency, the Gov
ernor. Chathan.
