GENERAL ROBERT JE. LEE.
BY MABY BAYARD CLARKE.
Ar went the knight with aword and shield
To tournay or to battle-fleld,
Pledged to the lady fair and true,
For whom his knightly sword he drew;
\ou offered at your country's c*U
Your life, your fortune, and your all;
Pledging your sacred honor high
For her to live, for her to die;
With her you cast your future lot,
And now, without one single spot
To dim the brightness of your fame,
Or cast a shadow o’er your name.
You lay your sword with honor down,
And wear defeat as *twere a crown;
Nor sit like Marius brooding o’er
A ruin which can rise no more;
But from your Pavia bear away
A glory bright’ning every day.
Above the wreck which round you lies,
Calm and serene I see you rise,
A grand embodiment of Pride
Chastened by sorrow, and allied
To disappointment but to show
How bright your virtues 'neath it glow.
But who may tell how deep the dart
Is rankling in your noble heart.
Or dare to pull the robe aside
WhictfCiesar draws his wounds to hide.
IN GENERAL.
—The venerable town of St. Marys, Ga., is rapidly
rising from its ashes. Besides numerous dwellings,
one steam saw-mill has been finished and another is
being built.
The Police Cmnmiasioners of Dublin have ordered
the swords recently diatributod to the force to be re
sharpened.
The N. Y. Tribune’s correspondent says: “Secre
tary Seward, in a conversation with a Pennsylvania
Congressman, boaated that he was the father of the
President's last enunciated policy.”
—David Williams was recently put on trial at Ben
ton. Illinois, for the murder of ILnry Mahon. While
tin* trial was in progress, the court, counsel, witnesses,
spectators and the prisoner wero astonished by the en
trance Into the court room of Maliou, the man sup
posed to bo murdered. The prisoner was so affected
by this unexpected release from custody that he wept
like a child.
—The cotton harvest in Algeria is magnificent.
\ laav wished a seat in a crowded hall. A gentle
man brought her a chair. “You are a jewel, ” said she.
“Oh, no, 1 am a jeweler; I have just set the jewel.”
—Philosophe s §av that shutting the eyes makes the
sense of hearing more acute. A wag suggests that this
accounts for the many closed eyes that arc seen in our
churches every Sunday.
—The war eo6t East Baton Rouge, La., 8,000 slaves,
100 dwellings, 5,000 bales of cotton burned, 5,000 stolen

There are as many roads to fame and fortune as
there were gateways to ancient Thebes. Yonr am
bitious warrior is for carrying his way with the
sabre; yonr aspiring politician for scheming his way
by intrigue and consummate art. But there is one
grand broad path to the goal, along which nothing
base can travel. It i» the path set apart for the
march of talent, energy, and noble purpose and
though full of obstacles, it contains none that a brave
man cannot surmount. This fact has been exemplified
n innumerable instances, bnt in lew more forcibly

READ WHO SAYS SO.
"FROM THE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
Washington, January 1, 1864.
GentlemenHaving stated It verbally to yon, I
have no hesitation In writing the fact, that I experi
enced marked benefit from vonr Hoofland’s German
Bitters. During a long and tedions session of Con
gress, pressing and onerous duties nearly prostrated
me. A kind friend suggested the nse of the prep
tion I have named. I took ilia advice, and the ret
was improvement of health, renewed energy, and
that particular relief I so much needed and obtained.
Others may be similarly advantaged, if they desire to
bo. Truly your friend,
THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
D
From Rev. W. D. Seigfried, Pastor of Twelth Baptist
Church.
Philadelphia, December 26,1863.
Messrs. Jones & Evens,
Gentlemen I have recently been laboring nndcr
the distressing effects of mdigeetion, accompanied by
a prostration of the nervous aVstem. Numerous rem
edies were recommended by friends aud some of them
tested, but without relief. Your Hooffiand’s German
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of the Bitters in
duced me also to try them. I must confess that I had
an aversion to patent medicines, from the “thonsand
and one" quack “Bitters,*’ whose only aim seems to
be to palm off sweetened and drugged liqnor upon
the community, in a sly way; and the tendency of
which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard.
Upon learning that yours waa really a medicinal
preparation. I took It with happy effect. Its action
was not only upon the stomach, but npon the ner-
vous system, waa prompt ant) gratifying. I feel that I
have derived great and permanent benefit from the
use of a few bottles. very respectfully yours,
