SAVANNAH, MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1866.
STOXEWAIiL JACKSON,
[The memory of-Stonewall Jackson has received few
ribi
tributes more touching m simplicity and pathos than
the following beautiful poem, published in the New
York ^Citizen,” of which Mr. Charles G. Halpine is
the editor. Mr. Halpine himself is a poet of rare taafce.
was an officer in the United States army during to*
late war, and is well known to fame as “Private Mi.e-
O’Reilly.” The poem in question
O Beuly. XU* poem In question, no
the-pen of a distinguished officer of the United State,
Navy.]—Petersburg Express.
He sleeps all quietly and cold
Beneath the soil that gave him Birth,
Then break his battle-brand in twain.
And lay it with him in the eerth 1
No more at midnight shall he urge
His toilsome march among the pines;
Nor hear upon the morning air
The war-shout of bis charging lines.
Cold Is the eye whose meteor gleam
Flashed hope on all within its light :
And still the voice that, trumpet-toned.
Bang through the serried ranks ol flgnt.
No more for him shall cannons park
Or tents gleam white upon the phun,
And where his camp-fires blazed of jure.
Brown reapers laugh amid the grain
No more above his nairow bed
Shall sound the tread of marching feet,
The rifle volley, and the crash
Of sabres when the foemen meet.
And though the winds of autumn rave,
itid winter snow fall thick and deep.
Above his breast—they cannot move
The quiet of bis dreamless sleep.
We may not raise a marble “-Aft
Above the heart that now is dust;
But nature, like a mother fond.
Will ne’er forget her sacred trust.
Young April, o'er his lowly mound
ShaLl shake the violets from her hair;
And glorioue June, with fervid kiss,
Khali bid the roses blossom there.
And round about the droning bee.
With drowsy hum, shall come and go.
While west winds all the livelong day
tjhall murmur dirges soft and low.
The warrior’s stormy fate is o’er,
The midnight gloom hath passed away;
And like a glory from the East,
Breaks the first light of Freedom's day 1
And white-winged Peace, o’er all the land.
Broods like a dove upon her nest:
While iron war with slaughter gorged.
At length hath laid him down to rest.
And where we won our onward way
With lire and steel, through yonder wood
The blackbird whistles, and the quail
Gives answer to her timid brood.
Yet oft in dreams his fierce brigade
Shall see the form they followed far,
Still leading in the farthest van—
A landmark in the clouds of war r
And oft when white-haired grandsires tell
Of blood v struggles past and gone.
The children at their knees will hear
How Jackson led his columns on!

Mmsaa Jonaa4 Evana,
GentlemenI have recently been laboring under
the distressing affeeu of taduteotion, aocompanied by
a prostration of thenervous system. Numerous rem
edies were recommended by mends and some of them
tested; bat withont relief. Your Hoofllanfi’s German
Bitters were recommended by penoae who had tried
them, and whose Ihvorabic mention of the BtUcrs in
duced meelao to try them. 1 must confess that X bad
sa aversion to patent medicines, from the “thousand
and one” quack “Bitters,” whose oulv aim seems to
oe to palm off sweetened and drugged liquor upon
the community, In a sly way; and the tendency of
which, I fear, to to make many a confirmed drunkard.
Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal
preparation. ItooK it with happy affect. Its action
was not only npon thastaaaacb, hot upon the ner
vous system, was prompt aad gratifying- 1 feel that I
have derived gnat
