tiioso of Morphia. Yours, &c.
C. L. MITCHELL, M. D.,
Resident Physician New-York Hospital.
Tiioso who take Opium and its ordinnry prepa
rations, cannot be ignorant ofthe fact that its dis
tressing und pernicious cficcts result from the
operation of its deleterious principles, uud that
the tremors, languor and lnsuirnde with which its
devotees are afilicted, and for which they repeat
die dose to relieve, arc sensations of its own ere
ation.
But in consequence of the exclusion of tiiose
deleterious principles from die Elixir of Opium, it
is not liable to derange the functions of die sys
tem, uor injure thecoiistitution and general health;
titmice its high superiority in allthose oases, in
winch die loug continued and liberal use of Opi-
uten arc indicated and necessary to ulluy pud and
spasmodic action, mid induce sleep and compo
sure, ns in cases of fractures, burns or scolds, cur
ccrous ulcers, und other painful affections.
And to diose persons, who, from necessity or
vitiated indulgence, have been accustomed to die
use of Oninm, this preparation will afford u gra-
tifving substitute by winch thoy nmy relieve them
selves from the thraldom of pernicious and too
frequently inveterate habit.

Fever composed or sovejal distinct paroxsysms,
with a perfect intermission, or period when no fe
ver is present, interposed between each. Each
paroxsysm has throe stages which successively fol
low each odier with considerable regularity, name
ly, a cold stage, a hot stage, and finally, a sweating
stage, which terminates die puroxystn.
Previously to an nttuck, u feeling of languor and
debility is experienced, with tduggisliness in motion
and some uneasiness in attempting to move. Tho
face and extremities bccoino pale, dio nails of a
leaden or livid color, the features shrunk, and tho
skin appears ns if contracted by cold; a feeling of
coldness comes on tiio back, rescmbliug often a
stream of cold water mnuing down it, and soon
exteuds over dio whole body, (tiiough nt tiiis tiino
dio skin of Uio patient will feel warm to nnother
person) the sensation of coldness soon increoxes
to a tremor, and this to rigours and shivering.
Tho ubovo syinntoins, which are those of the
cold stage, vary ui different individuals, being very
•light in some, in otiiers very severe. They are
generally more severe in dio old and debilitated,
than in tlio young and strong, and last from a few
minutes to many hours. After a time, differing in
almost every case, die dullness seems to abate, or
to alternate widi slight Hushes of heat—tiiese soon
give place to a continued and increased heat of the
pkin; tiien follows all the symptoms of fover. Af
ter an uncertain period die symptoms abate, asweat
now gradually breaks ont, nud soon becomes pro
fuse,—when using the mixture, all painful symp
toms disappear, the skin becomes cool and dio pu-
tieiit "niuuuily better until dio paroxysm passes
entirely oft*. All fevers marked by u distinct chill,
followed by fever and sweating, and terminating
ill a more or less perfect remission of all the symp
toms, dio ague occurring nt tolerably regular in
tervals, are lucluded in tho class of iutermiuents.
As Ague und Fever generally originate in places
contiguous to marshy und inundated ground, euro
should bo taken not to be exposed mure than ne
