Proposals
For publishing, in the town of Irwinton, Alaba
ma. a Weekly Newspaper, to be entitled the
IRWINl'ON CHICO YICLE.
H AVING beard many complaints of tho want
of a Newspaper in this town, (to bu con
ducted in a gentlemanly like manner,) the under
signed have been induced, by die curneit solici
tations of many friends, to embark iu tlio under
taking.
In assuming died tides consequent upon such
an unterpriso, we feel deeply conscious of die re
sponsibility which will devolve upon us; utid
knowing, too, tho diversity of the lititum mind,
wo cannot flatter ourselves dial we will he aide

cate ull suoh measures as are best calculated to
advance die prosperity of the Eastern suction of
our State, abounding as it docs, in so many na
ture lad vuntngcs, and us a necessary con.sequence,
especially to promote the interests of our own
town. Our turn will be to render our paper use
ful and valuable to all classes ofthe community—
in short. Literature, Useful Information, Agri
culture, Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, will
each receive a due proportion of.our attention.
in regard to Politics, we deotn it necessary to
say, that we shall give the general Political intel
ligence of the whole country, while ut tho same
time, as conductors of a Free Press, wc will
fearlessly, and widiout favor or affection, advo
cate anu support all such measures us will,.in our
opinion, promote our geuural prosperity us a
People, and die perpetuity of cur Rights and Li
berties.
Our paper will be purely Republican, as prac
tised by those great Apostles of Liberty—JEF
FERSON mid MADISON—preferring them as
our guide, rather diun the new-light, bem-
stylkd Democratic Republicans of dm j>r*»***ti»
day. We are ‘^strict constructionists” of die Fe
deral Compact, and shall, dierefore, Oppose all
schemes ot Internal Improvement, except by the
Stutcs themselves, os a purl of that “American
Sy stem” whichlias proved t o ruinous to the South
and which was attempted to be fastened upon us,
under that most plausible and specious pretext,
the “GENERAL WELFARE.” Believing, as
we do, diat it is the duty of every good citizen to
cherisii with jeulotis care tho “Union of the
States, and the sovereignty of the States,”
und us ihis caxmoibe done without a strict adher
ence to the Constitution itself, we nliall not bo
sparing in our denunciutiop of the attempts which
are mid huve been made by tho late, as well as the
present, Administration, to control, not only die
monied facilities of tho Government, blit of tlio
entire country. With regard to the question
which is now agitatiug the country rolativu to the
currency, we now uultesitatuigly declare our
hostility to tho dirico-rejeeted Sub-Treasury Sys
tem, tending as it does, in our opinion, to an'in
crease of Executive power, which bus already been
claimed and exercised to an alarming extent, in
more instances dinn one, if not by the present in
cumbent, by his immediate predecessor, in whoso
“footsteps” he is endeavoring to head.
Wc expect to encounter litany perils, many ad
verse winds; yet, aided by the strong breath of
public favor und support, die trade winds of our
world must'waft us clear of our troubles—wc
dure raise oar anchor, unfurl our sheets, and ven
ture boldly upon our new and untried course.
What shoals and quicksands, what rocks mid hid
den perils awit us,“alas we kown not!” Lotus
but clear die harbor, and get fairly “under way,”
then vve will fear uothing. Nor is this the vain
boast made when danger is far in the distance.
It. is our firm determination, mode !, fter rcricn^
thought, ami weighing well the diliicultioH we are
to meet widi.
The Chronicle will he issued as early us the
necessary materials can be obtained from Now-
York, wflich will be in December or early in Jan

sheet, containing twenty-four columns, with en
tire new type, und will not be surpassed in beau
ty by any paper in the Southern Country.

ttr. McMimn's Elixir ut Opium
This ia a new chemical preparation,* containing
all tho v;i! unb!o Medicinal qualities of Opium, in
a natimd stale of combination to tho exolusioh
of Us noxious principles.
TjlULL proporlioih of tho greatest number of
J?- the noxious principles of Opium, are con
tained infaudanum, Paregoric, Blaokdrop, Don-
nreotized Laudanum, Extract of Opium amUurh i
oilier opinio preparations of this class hitherto
nin.de, and to which arc Justly .attributed those
disagreeable ntVectHUpoii Iffo stomach nndncrvpus
system, which so frequently follow their opera-
tidn, ond limit their Uscftdness.
Tins Elixir nmy be adopted in ull those cases in
which either Opium or’ Its preparations are ad
ministered, with tho certainty of obtaining all
their sedative, anodyne and iiuti-spasinodic ef
fects, without any of these disagreeable conse
quences, of headache, nausea, vomiting, coustU
potion, tremors, and a train of other unhappy
symptoms, which are often aadistrewing as tho-e
which it was applied to remove.
The Elixir of Opium is not only superior to tho
artificial compounds of Morphine, in its being
more mild, permanent and uniform in its effects,
but tho preparation 'possesses also a superior ad
vantage to their solutions, in not being liable to
decomposition or deterioration from variable tem
perature or long keeping: a serious objection to
which the latter are exposed.
Finally, Morphine, not being tlio full represen
tative of Opium, cauuot alone, and that in artifi
cial combination ton, produce all the characteristic
effects of so triumphant a remedy, whenso many
of its other valuable principles as Codciu, Nar-
ceinund MeconicAcid are excluded.
TESTIMONIALS.
From Dr. C}iilton r *die eminent Chemist of New-
York, iu proof of the accomplishment of this
discovery.
Dr. John B. McMnnil having made known to
me tho process by wliiqh bo prephrse his “Elixir
of Opium,” ami wishing me to state my opinion
concerning it, I therefore say, that tho process is
in accordance with well known Chemical laws,
and that the preparation must contain all the valu
able principles of Opium, withoutthosewliicharo
considered as deleterious and useless. ,

Dr. Mitchell’s trials of the Elixirof Opium in the
Hospitals.
New-York. Feb. 8tl», 1837.
Dr. J. B. McMtinn—Dear Sir: I have made re
peated trials of your “Elixir of Opium” in the
City and Marine Hospitals, and find it to pos-ess
the’anodvnc and sedative powers of the ordinary
preparation* of Opium, without producing the
excitement, headache, nausea and constiputiou,
which in many cases lender those preparations ob
jectionable. Its effects are more periuauent than
those of Morphia. Yours, «Stc.
C. L. MITCHELL, M. D.,
Resident Physician New-York Hospital.
Thosa who take Opium and its ordinary prepa
rations, cannot he ignorant ofthe fact that its dis
tressing and pernicious effects result from the
operation of its deleterious principles, and that
the tremors, iniiffiiornud lassitude with which its
devotees are afflicted, and for which they repeat
the dotiQ to relievo, are sensations of its own cre
ation.
But in consequence of the exclusion of those
deleterious principles fromthe Elixir of Opium, it
is not liable to derange tho functions of the sys
tem, nor injure the constitution und general health;
thence its high superiority in all those cases, in
which the long continued and liberal use of Opi
ates are indicated and necessary to allay pail and
spasmodic action, and induce sleep and compo
sure, ad incases of fractures, burns or scalds, can
cerous ulcers, and otherpuinful affections.
And ,to those persons, who, from necessity or
vitiated indulgence, have been accustomed to tho
use of Opium, this preparation will afford a gra
tifying substitute by which they may relieve them
selves from the thraldom of pernicious and too
frequently iuveterate habit.
Directions tor using the Elixir of Opium.

D R. KERSHAW’S Tonic Mixture for the
Fever and Ague. Double the strength of any
oilier of tho Tonic Mixtures,
Intermittent Fever, or as it is more popularly
called, Fever and Ague, or Chills uud Fevers, i« a
Fever composed of several distinct paroxaysins,
w ith a perfect intermission, or period when no fe
ver is present, interposed between each.' Each
naroxs^oiu has three stages, which successively fol
low each other with considerable regularity, name
ly, a cold sthgu, a hot stage, and finally, u sweating
hinge, which terminates the paroxysm.
Previously loan attack, a reeling of languor and
debility is experienced; with sluggishness in motion
and some uneasiness iu attempting to move. Thu
face and extremities become pule, the nails of a
leaden or livid color, the features shrunk, and tlio
skin appears ns if contracted by cold; a feeling of
coldness comes ou the- back, resc-nibiing often a
stream of cold wutcr running down it, and soon
extends over the whole body, (though at tliis time
theskiu of the patient will feel warm to another
person) the sensation of coldness soon increases
to a tremor, and tliis to rigours and shivering.
The above symptoms, which are those of the
cold stage, vary iu Uifl'ereut individuals, being very
•light in some, in others very severe. They are
generally more severe in tho old and debilitated,
Until in the young and strong, und lust from u few
minutes to many hours. After a time, differing in
almost every case, the chillness seems to ubate, or
to alternate with slight flushes of hoot—these soon
give place to a continued and increased heat of tho
skin; then follows all tlio s)tnptoms of fever. Af
ter an uncertain period tho symptoms abate, asweat
now gradually breaks out, uud soon becomes pro
fuse,—when using die mixture, all puinful symp
toms disappear, the skin becomes cool and the pa
tient gradually better until ,lhe paroxysm pusses
entirely off. All fevers marked by a distinct chill,
followed by fever and sweating, und terminating
in a more or less perfect remission of all the syuip-
.toins, tho ague occurring at tolerably regular in
tervnls, are included iu the class of iuterluittents.
As Ague and Fever generally originate inulaces
contiguous tomurshy and inundated ground, cure
should be taken not to bu exposed more than ne
cessary, either to the heat of the sun or iu the open
uir after suu-dowii.
