^rtnek Gallantry.—If a lady meets tf gentleman
upon die little side walk, which French courtesy
calls a ,, trottoir, n it is tiie lady who trots into tlia
mud.—The French women seemed used to this
submission, and yield to it instinctively; aud, in
deed, all who feel dieir weakness, ns children
and old men, being subject to die same necessi
ty, show tho same resignation. Also, if n number
of gentlemen are cotericd even across die broad
walk of tho Boulevards, die lady walks round,
not to incoramodo them; and it is not to bo
expected of a French gentleman in a public place
or vehicle, that he should give his cent to any one
of whatever sex, ago, or condition, oivthftt be
should deviate from this straight lino on the street

" If <t child is negligent till six years of ego, no

ago it is brought tip in dissipation and ignorance,

cy of mind which such habits create, it is in vain
to attempt to reclaim it by teaching it reading ami
