damage hero than any farmer gale within the re

which principally Arils upon the inhabitants of
this town. Thewjnd blew with gnat violence,
causing tho tide to rise much higher than naual,
and nearly every vaosei that was fastened st die

To lhe Editor of the Daily Republican: 4
Snt—It would seem to us while motives of
judgment would dictate to the Whigs no choice
to supercetffe the prevailing Administration, other
than the name of Iienry Clny; it would seem to
ns that while we regarJ this great Statesman, as
pre*eminent in our National Legislation for tlie
soundest viows nnd the iuo*t harmonizing pow*
ers; one on whom we may well have rallied, and
for whom any exertion, though defeated, is glory
enough; but who in Csilling forth tho boat chivalry
of onr country might have triumphed, as by mag
ic, against the magician, that we ought to accept
his advice, and support with tlie same vigor, the
nomiuco of tlie National Whig Convention.—
Such being the cose, onr duty lies plainly before
ns, add we have bnt to fulfil tliat duty.
Gcnsral Harrison, therefore, mast and ought
to receive our cordial support. Ilis residing
North of die Potomac nnd the Ohio, is no indica
tion that he is for the local predilections of aboli
tionary movements. We cannot implicitly rely
on the faith and promises of such a man as Mr.
Van Bnren t who might cut n figure diametrically
adverse in die last years ofhis administration, to
those that demorked the aentimeuts he gave out
on Abolition in the first years. A man that de
ceives all parties, is old in deceit, if old in politi
cal strategy. We know the lessons of history—
and the characters of Richelieu, of Machiavelli,
and of Talleyrand, have not tanght ns to believe
Martin Van Buren. This Tallcyraud of Ameri
ca, is yet but resting on his oars—a secret eman
cipator, folly waiting to be beyoud contingencies
from die electoral voice, to give into plans that
must startle his warmest Southern supporters and
advocates.
Placing side by side now, the names of Harri
son and Van Bureu—canvassing their respective
merits and pretensions—reading the history of the
lives of both—comparing their feelings & views,
and holding up for our immaculato touch-stone,
the experience of their former doings—the unva
rying fluctuations and changes of die life of the
latter, admonish us even as Soudiem men, to be
certain of the character and tendencies of the man
for whom we vote. Since principles with a safe
and sound currency are oar aims, minor
particulars should not divide our ranks;
and on great particulars, a native of die
State of Virginia, and son of a signer
of the Declaration of Independence, aud.ono that
rixke 1 every thing to chastise the enmity of trou
blesnrae transadautic foes, would not fail to be
found agreeing with us on cardiuul maxims, more

The. commitiee on elections, he bad hoped, would

After some remark from Mr. VASnxnroxT..

Air. Campbell's resolutions were now in order,

Armed occupation of Florula.
Mr. Benton ended np the Bill for the armed
occupution^f Florida. Air. Benton spoke at length
in defence of tho hill.
Air. Tappan made some very strong remarks
in reply to Mr Benton. He did not thiuk the
measure introduced the best to he supported by
Congress, and ho could not, Uiorefore, vote fur
the hill. The cases cited by M. Benton, as afford
ing a niniiiar case of necessity and suffering, were
uot alike. That of the Israelites in die Holy
Laud whs different. Air. T. said lie should bo glad
to see die’plunSdopted which was successful indie
setdement of Now England. Such a plan was
not impracticable, aad it could bo adopted, and
..ni. nuts c.uld meet there and defend themsel
by themselves.
Mr. Preston followed in die debate. He de
clared that the General Government had shame
fully abandoned its duty in Florida. If die Execu
tive had done his duty, and the head of the War
Department had done his duty, the case would
have been different from what it has been. The
couduct of the Government has been dilatory in
the extreme, and the sufferings, ravagesand blood
shed porportioned. Florida has cost the Govern
ment an immense sum of money. An immense
sum had been paid for the originial purchase and
animmenso treasure poured out. Mr. P. be
lieved that the bill was wholly inefficient, and
would fail to accomplish its purposes.
The 8enate adjourned after Mr. Preston had
finished his remarks, and oiler some unimportant
informal bussiueis.
