Iy on. hundred millions Qfdollnw or our Cotton,
mdtnhcbach fifty milhona in Cotton Goods
from their w orkshops, there is a reciprocity of
interests in this-nn exchange of products for com-
modifies; but if England, for the avowed object
of becoming independent of tills* country, shall
cultivate all iho Colton she requires mi India,
where is she to sell her Cotton Goods ? Not m
this country, certainly ; for wo could not destroy
our rich agricultural products hy continuing to
purchase Goods, manufactured from British Cot
ton, while wo can workup seven hundred thou
sand bales annually in our factories, and thus en
courage Americnu Goods, manufactured out of
Americau Cotton. England, hy this experiment,
might gain a little on one tack, yet loose considera
bly on the other.—Again, England inn few years
would find a serious rivalry in our Cotton fabrics
in the European market, lor. wo already nianu-
ftrture prints considered full ns good as the En-
glidi.nnd full as cheap. Besides, our surplus
Cotton shut out of England, would find a market
in several European countries.
It is manifestly the interest of England and her
productive labor to maintain a most liberal inter
course with this country, nnd to venture upon
no experiments which would deprive her of the
American market. The period is fast approach
ing when this country, relieved in n measure
from the incessant and injurious excitement of
politics, must turn its attention to its own resour
ces, and nlso to the condition of our treaties with
foreign powers, which require grent revision.
Our population may amount to seventeen mil
lions, and while it will be found that every coun
try on earth derives some commercial benefits
from tlio United States, and several European
powers realize many millions from the Tobacco
monopoly alone, we aro neglecting our own in
terests in not securing reciprocal benefits from
our treaties. The future, we are cnnfidant.opons
immense prospects for our country, if discreetly
and prudently managed, maintaining a liberal in
tercourse with foreign nations, while not neglect
ing wlmt is due to our own interests.
BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATION.
At the celebration ofthe 4th at Poughkeepsie,
the Hon. Ilenry A. Wise of Virginia, one of
the invited guests, delivered an address, full of
liia usual power and originality. The sub
ject was democracy—true, genuine democracy,
os contrasted with the democracy ofLocofocoism.
In the courao of his speech he introduced ail
episode, which had a tremendous .effect. After
speaking of the long period during which he Itad
struggled, almost hopelessly against Use parly in
! iower, he suddenly exclaimed “Is there any one
iere, who over lost his way on a bleak, dreary,
starless, winter's night, among the mountains,
and who after wandering for hours, bewildcrod,
chillei, almost despairing, cnine suddenly upon
the cheerful light of a Log Cabin, gleaming nntong
the snow! Did the wanderer enter in? Did
hefeel the warmth from the big log, that bfrzcd
upnu tlie ample hearth? Did the honest tenant o f
Uint log cabin extend to him a squatter's welcome?
and did his kind wife tuck up her sleeves, and
go to work, and preparo him a meal, nnd then
spread a couch for his weary limbs? If there is
any oneamonp you, who has thus fallen sudden
ly upon comlorl and hospitality, In tho midst of
oarkness and of danger, lie can appreciate my
leelmgs, as I see the light ofliberty and prosperi
ty bursting on mu benigked country from a Loo
Cajun in ihe lfat.” The effect of this beautifu I
and striking illustration wna indescribable. A
sensation like electricity shook the whole multi
tude, and raised such a shouting and enthusiasm
••made tho wolkin ring. The allusion went
fltraighitn iho heart* ofthe assembled crowd, and
tho air was rent with their acclamations. Cer-

Grain— JKkrot—*The market docs not appear to
have been affected by the late English news—oxccnt
in maintaining prices, which were already high
enough,, nnd which would probably have receded but
for the news. Prices, therefore, have been steady
throughout the week, die sales of new Md reds rang
ing from 100 to 112} cents for fair to strictly priino
inrcels; and of fair to good new Md. whites at 110 a
.15 cents. An occasional lot of striedy prime white,
suitable for family flour, has been taken at 120 cents.
We may here remark that parcels of inferior Md.
wheats, sent to market badly cleaned, are very diffi
cult of sale at that price, nnd in not a few cases this
week could not bo 6old at all.
Fair supplies of old Pennsylvania wheats have
reached the market by tho Tide Water Canal, the
sales of which have ranged from 110 to 114 cents, as
in quality. Parcels to bring tho highest price, must
be etrictly prime
Some 10.000 bushels of new Virginia red wheat
have been sold during the week at 106 to 112} for fair
to strictly prime.
To day the rates noted obove continue to prevail,
although the market is hardly aa brisk. ^
Corn—White has been pretty uniform throughout
the week, at 48 a 49 cents, and we quote those rates
to day. We quote yellow to-doy at 50 a 51 cents.
Tlie supplies of Virginia corn navo been large, and
the sales have been at 48 a 48} cents for die straw
colour. Sales to day at 48 cents.
Dye—A sale of Md. at 58 cents. The orticlo is
scarce and wanted. Penna Rye is worth 65cents.
Oats—We continue new Md. to day at 25 a 26 cents
-A sale of Virginiayesterday at 23 cents.
Molasses—A small lot of Porto Rico in bbls. was
sold to-day at auction at 30 cts.
Frovisioas —There lias been a good demand for
striedy prime Western assorted Bacon throughout
the week at8} cents. Of this quality, however, the
market is nearly bare, aud but lew transactions have
taken place. Of inferior qualities there is a large
stock tn market, but there is not much inquiry for it.
We note sales of Baldmoro cured sides at 8} cents,
and of Western at die same price. A salcof Western
shoulders also, not of prime quality, nt 6} rents.-—
There is no stock of Baltimore cured Bacon in the
market. We note sales of a few small parcels of Hams
at 11} cents. In barrel provisions there is nothing
of consequence doing, and prices remain nominal at
our quotilinos, viz Mess Pork at 816 50 to 917;Prime
at814 50; Mess Bcefnt8t5;No.l at 913; and Prime
at 911. In Lard there is nothing doing. Holders of
No. 1 arc firm at 12} cents. We note some small
transactions in Western keg Butter at 10 to ll cents.
The inspections of the we.-k comprise 162 barrels
Beef; 14 barrels Pork; 64 barrels, l half barrel, and
36 kegs Lard; and 59 kegs Butter.
Spirits—Tho market continues almost bare of New
England Rum. A sale of a few barrels was made
this week at 32 cts. which is an advance. No lihds.

Sugars—-The only auction sale this week took place
to dny, when 51 hhds. Porto Rico wero sold at 87 20
a 87 30.
Whiskey—In the early part of the week the market
. as firm ot 28 cents for hnds. nnd 30 cents for bbls.
Since then there has been loss firmness—todny hhds
ore heavy at58 cents, nnd nlso bbls., nt 29 a 30 cents.
The wngon price of bbls. is 24 a 25 cents, exclusive
ofthe barrel. The iusnecdon compriso 132 hhds.

Human Hair.
FTlHE diseases nf the hair among us are those
X which occasion baldness and gradual billing
off ofthe hair, and thinness of it—the causes of
which arise from many disorders, especially fe
vers; perspiration, which extends the norcs, re
laxes tne roots, causes tlie hair to fail off, and of
ten occasions total baldness. Buldness has ever
been esteemed a great defect. It generally arises
through violent exercise, from whenco arise per
spirations, which too frequently occasion a loss
ofthe hair—it relaxes the roots—the acidity pre
vents the fluid acting on tho hair, which occasions
it to waste. For instance, after a violent perspi
ration tho hair becomes.dry, it feels extremely
hursh, and no elasticity iu it whatever; therefore,
to prevent its taking an effect on tho hair, first
rub tlio hair dry with n cloth, then apply tlie Cus-
smlu Oil to the roots of the hair, so that tho skin
•of this head way ha moistened, aud remain so af
ter each time of perspiration.
