Destructive Firs and Lois or Lire at
Rochkstkr.—The four story stone building,
known as Curlin', on Malne-street, adjoining tho
river, and occupied by stores, a grist mill, dee.,
was burnt down 1 o'clock on Wednesday morn
ing. Tim wall fell in with a crash into the river,
crushing seven! smell wooden buildingn.^Dy
the grent exertions of the firemen, who were In
the river np to their necks playing with their
pipes, the fire was prevented from extending;
hut one of the firemen, Mr. George B. Benja
min was thereby instantly killed hy die walls fall
ing on him. The sufferers are Mr. Curtis, cloth
store, $3000; Burtis, stove fectory; Strong,
glove and whip do.; Foster, grist mill; Colby,
machine shop, etc. The destruction of so much
machinery was a grent loss.*
The Effect at Jf'ashingtou.—A letter in the Bos
ton Atlas, fVom Washington, describes the effect
produced in the White House, by the returns of
the Western elections,to have been tremendous.
It whs tike the bursting of a bomb shell. The
President laid down his newspaper, took off his
glasses, and remained for a long time buried in
thought. Woodbury socked the head of his cano
in moody silence. 'Paulding reproached Poin
sett with the army bill, who sat frowning in a corn
er without deigning to make n reply. A meet
ing of die Privy Council wns to be called in the
evening, to which all thn Kitchen Cabinet wns in
vited. It is thought Kendall and Niles will be
reprimanded for not keeping a closer surveillance
over the Post Office. I saw Blair this morniug
in the Pennsylvania Avenue, and he looked
ghnstly.
Supremacy op Fortuke in War.—Often from
a slight mistake such disastorons consequences
flow that in every age and nation die uncertainty
of nnn* has been proverbial.—Napoleon's inarch
upon Madrid in 1809, before he knew the ex
act situation of the British army, is an example.
By thnt march he lout his flume to his enoiny.
Sir John Moore seized the advantage, and though
the French Emperor repaired the error for die
moment by hi* astonishing march from Madrid
toAstorga, the fine ofthe Peninsula wns then de
cided. If he hud not hnen forced to turn against
Moore, Lisbon would have fallon, Portugal
conld not have been organized for resistance,
and the jealonw of the Spaniards would never
have suffered Wellington to establish a solid
base at Cadiz; thnt general's after success would
then have been with the things that are unborn.
It was not ao ordained. Wellington was victo
rious—the grent conqueror was overthrown.
England stood the most triumphant nation of the
world. But an enormous debt, a dissatisfied
people, gaining peace without tranquillity, great
ness without intrinsic strength, the present time
unnnsy. the flitnre dark and tiireatning. Yet lie
rejoices in the glorv of her arms t And it it a
stirring sound! War is the condition of this
world. From man to the smallest insect, all are
at strife, and the glory of arms, which cannot bo
obtained without the exercise of honor, forti
tude, courage, obedience, modesty, and temper
ance, excites the brave man's patriotism, and is a
chastening corrective for the rich man’s pride.
It ii not aeourity for power. Napoleon lost hy
arms Poland, Germany, Italy. Portugal, Spain,
and France. Fortnne, that name fbr the unknown
combinations of infinite power, was wanting to
him, and without her aid the designs of. man are
aa bubbles on the troubled ocean.—Napier's Pen

By th# attention of en* esteemed friend we are

tain no news of importance. To die same
oouroe wears indebted for tho following tetter
dated
"JACKSONVILLE, Sept 2.
“The only intolligauce I have to communicate
le die following. The scout composed of Capt.
Higgin's command of tbe Volunteers and a do-
tachment of tbo U. 8. Dragoons under Lieut.
May, returned to Gnrcy’i Perry on Friday, 28ib
Inst., alter ineffectually pursuing die Indians a-
bout 60 mile*. They took the trail uenr the Oko-
finokee and followed it In a Southern direction
until it tutored the Ocean Poud Hammock, from
which posidon the scont routed the Indiana sev
eral. times. They were to near the savages at
one time, that tho latter were obliged to throw
awey their packs consisting of clothes end other
plunder taken from thn families that had fallen be
fore their ferocity. The Indians, however, auc.
evaded in eluding the vigilance of their pursuers.
They probably separated, and thus their trail be
came so indistinct that it could not be followed.
There were about 50 Indians.
"It will fin'remembered that this ia the same
•ceol that were detailed upon the murder of
Courcy, oh the South prong ofthe St. Marys.
P. S. I am just informed, that a man by the
name of Parsons, was shot aboutseven miles from
Black Creek,a Rule off the Newnansville Road.
Hq was hunting in company with a Mr. Tucker,
when he was shot. There were about 15 Indians.
Tucker escaped, aaya my informant, bat minor
says ho was shot also.”
Extract of a letter received in this city, dated
"BLACK CREEK, Sept.2,1840.
" Station No. 10 is broken tip and the Indians,
are spread about this section of country. OnSnn-
day last they shot the express rider m few mile*
from Pilatka, end on 5Tonday, shot two teamsters
and captured their wagons near Fort Tarver.
An express hasthis moment arrived with informs,
tion that tbey had hilled n men at die seven mile
House. All here is in a bustle about it.”
From the Jacksonville Advocate, 1st inst.
On Thursday last, a 51 r. Crews, one of the suf
ferers, wns shot through the hat while passing
from hii deserted home to the Fort at Mr. Tom-
in's. He fired upon and wounded the Indian,
but not mortally.
Signs have been y«ported 7 and 19 miles of
this place, in the latter place, three camps were
discovered.
