From the Hon. J. Taliaferro, Member of Con
gress, and Member of the late Convention.
Richmond, 9th November, 1829.
Sir—It has been my wish, for a considerable
time, to communicate the good effect with which
I have used your ’Patent Specific Ointment,’and
which I now understand is made and sold by A-
gents appointed by yourself. I have applied this
Ointment during the last four years, to every spe
cie* of tumour and wound, without failure to pro
duce a cure iu every instance. I consider it the
most decided and efficacious remedy in all cases
of tumour, be the cause what it may, and I have
found nothing bo good for wounds of any des
cription. It may be proper to add that the cure
ofu tumour called White Swelling! given over
by the most distinguished physicians as incura
ble, and which they decided would, without am-
pntation, prove fatal to the patient, was, under
my immediate notice, effected by the use of your
oiutment, cud the patieut is iu fine health. hi«
limb affected by tho tumour being restored to a
perfect state of soundness. Also, that the leg of
a man upwards of 80 years o!d, which had been
wounded, nnd exhibited one dreadfully ulcerated
surface from knee to font, and which, for more
than two years*, had been considered incurable,
was effectually cured by the application of this
Ointment. 1 meution these two cases, which fell
under my immodiute notice and management, as
a decided evidence ofthe efficacy of this remedy
in cases of tumour and of ulcers. I have experi
enced us decidedly, the good effect of this remedy
in the cure of felons, and every species of fresh
wound.
In addition to the above cases, it may be proper
to state what I know of its sure effects as a reme
dy in all cases of scrofulous tumour.
It seem* to me that any one who will observe
Ihe operation of this Ointment, must be satisfied
as to its beneficial effect. I can, with the utmost
confidence, recommend the use of this most valu
able remedy. I am, Sir, very respectfully,
JOHN TALIAFERRO.

A Certain Cure for Sick Ileud-
Ache.
W HICH has been used in families, every
member of which has had sick headache
from infancy,as a constitutional family complaint,
and has cured effectually in every instance yet
known, amounting to many hundreds. It is not
unpleasant to the taste, nnd does not prevent :he
daily avocations of one using itt it must be perse*
vered in, and tho cure is gradual, but certain and
permanent. Instances ore constantly multiply
ing where this distressing complaint is complete
ly relieved and cured, although of years standiug,
by the use of Dr. Spohn’s celebrated remedy.
One decided preference is its pleasantness, hav
iug none of the nauseating effects of comuiou
drugs.
In all dyspeptic symtoms, costiveness, irregu
larity, distress after meals, pains in the strip and
torpidity ofthe liver, the cure is perfect, and any
one so afflicted will become immediately convin
ced on using it, that he has at Inst found a '‘sover
eign balm for hi« wounds." Females are particu
larly recommended to uso it for costivencss or ir
regularity, and other female complaints. It is
proved to correct vitiated nnd disordered humors
keeping tho stomach in most perfect order. Those
persons who after an evenings indulgence at par
ties, &o. have headache and dullness the next
day, will fiud this a sure preventive if tnken at
bed time. For all common complaints, in a few
daysits virtues will be self-evident, and a complete
cure will soon be effected. When a person has
a cold nnd feels unwell, generally a free use ofit
fora few days will be suro to relieve without
physic or pills. To children it may be given with
the greatest advantage.
In all ucidity or sourness of stomnch this remedy
is sovereign nnd invaluable; as a general family
medicine it is now adopted by many of the most
respectable familcs. It never sickens the stomach
or produces any of the un pleasant effects ofphysic.

triumphantly tested not only by some ofthe most
respectable families in the District, ready to sub
scribe to their decided excellence, but ulso by tho
fortnnatediscoverer,in self-experiment, who, fty
ten long years, suffered all the gloom aud horror
incidentto that stubborn aud distressing disease.
For a cure, much money was expended—Physi
cians of skill consulted—tho most popular medi-
cinestried—but all to no permanent, salutary ef
fect. In the reputed virtues of “Cosby," a flat
tering hope wus entertained for a scason.butthot
eventually proved not to bo the thing, inasmuch
as it left the system in a bad state—so weakened
nnd otherwise unpleasantly affected, that its furth
er uso was deemed altogether unadvisable; which
circumstance led to the discovery aud successfu
trial of these invaluable Bitters.
In point of offiency, these Bitters have been
feuna by the most satisflictory experiments, to be
fully equal to “Cosby.” In Rome respects, they
are decidedly preferable to that celebrated com
pound: i. e. although nominally as expensive,

fected) are more agreeable to thetuste, more hap
py in their general and ultimate effects, never
cause ‘inward trembling,’ never ‘make the month
and lips sore,’ and render a resort to ‘ginger tea,

sary. They will also be found to possess tho pe
culiar excellence; denied to most other Bitters, of

w opinion has been long entertained by in
telligent medicul men, fiiiniHar with tlio use
of tho waters ofthe Wliito Snlphar Springs in
Greenbrier connty, Virginia, that the medical
virtues of tliuso waters are mainly dependent up
on the saline ingredients which they hold in so
lution. The correctness of tills opinion has re
cently been abundantly established by the sana
tive effects which are exerted upon the system by
the salts ofthese waters obtained by careftil evap.
oration. The simple salts of the water thus ob
tained , although sufficiently strong, In convenient
doses, for many cases of disease, ore, perhaps, ss
a cathartic, too slow in their operation for general
use. To combine the specific virtues of the salts
oftho water with a more speedy cathartic effect,
it has been found advantageous, to unite with
the saline ingredients, very small portions of veg-
etablepurgativo matter, and in this form the arti
cle is now prepared under the lights and sanctions
of experience, and recommended, not os a puna
cea remedial for every disease, but as a valuable
alterative and cathartic medicine, adapted to a
vnriety of affections for which medicines of this
class are usually proper. For some time this med
icine has been prepared at the Springs and giveu
«>vay to such individuals as desired its use. The
cal(s for it have, however, now become so fre
quent (its preparation being very troublesome)
it has been thought expedient to prepare small
quantities of it for sale to supply the public. It
will be found well adapted to ninny cases of Dys-
pepsln, Liver Complaints, Jaundice.Rhenmntism,
Neuralgia, Chorosis, Cutaneous Eruptions, Ob-
stinato Cos iveness, and may -he used with per
feet safety in oiiv case in which an alterative nnd
mild cathnrtic effect nre desired. Many intelli
gent persons familiar with the medicine, believe
it to bo peculiarly adapted to the cure of those
chronic affections so successfully'treated by the
use ofthe White Sulphur Water, hut as yet, ex
perience with the medicine has been too limited
to justify any positive conclusions upon this point.
It usually operates on the bowels, when taken in
a full dose in from three to six hoars. At the
‘Springs,’ where the medicine is much used, ad
vantage is thought to he derived from drinking
the W hite Sulphur Water freely the morning
after it is taken, to work it off, though it is not re
garded as very essential that any thing should bo
used for this purpose. For sale by

Ktowfind’s Tonic Mixture, or
Vegetable Febrifuge,
A specific and lusting cure for Fever and Ague,
mills worthy remedy earnestly repels the slur
JL of being a quack medicine, it haying been
the result of many years study, experience and
labor, in the medical practice aud observation of
Fever and Ague. It is composed of such medi
cinal principles as were considered most fit to re
store the harmony of action between the stomach,
liver, and the other important fiinctlons of tho
system, the loss of which harmony is evidently the
ipnnediate cause of the disense. Jt speedily pro
motes a regular nnd healthy appetite which is
generally entirely destroyed or rendered very
precarious; by which effect, vigor nnd strength is
soon ufforded to the whole system. It must be
apparent to all. flint a medicine possessing these
peculiar virtues, is useful in a great variety of
compluints. By renewing the healthy action of
the digestive organs, it has proved itself of re
markable benefit in dyspepsia, depraved appetite,
heart-burn, water brush, flatulency, jaundice,
night sweats, dysentery, bowel complaints, and
nil other affections of similar origin, but it is in
tho treatment of Fevers, nnd especially in Fever
and Ague, or Remittent Favor, that its powers
imve been principally tested, and with those who
have seen tts usefulness, it is pronounced sover
eign to all’ remedies heretofore discovered fo
those diseases. It lias also been used as a pre
ventive, by many who wore subject to a periodi
cal recurrence of the chills nnd fever, and it has
nhvuyn warded off* the apprehended attack. It
was deemed not improper to accompany tho
vegetable febrifuge with n few of tho many une
quivocal certificates politely furnished to tlio pro-
? rictor.corroborative ofthe’ foregoing statements,
'or further accounts of its great usefulness, see
pamphlet* accompanying each bottle.

Hamilton^ Elixir of Opium*
A new and important Disco eery.
r ? has l ong been a great desideratum in Medi
cal Science, and has been the subjectof a vast
amount of Chemical experiment, to obtain the
medicinal qualities of Opium to the exclusion of
its noxious principle and useless combinations.
No article in the whole range of the Pharmaco
peia i« perhaps of greater importance to man
kind; and none which lias engaged a greater share
of chemical attention. Every preparation hither
to mnde from this drug, whether in the form of
Extract, Morphia,Black Drop.Paregoric or Laud
anum. contains in close combination a poison
with the antidote, and hence we find the adminis
tration of them attended with a numerous train of
evils, among which are headache, lassitude, tre
mors, iinttsea, vomiting, constipation, derange
ment ofthe nervous system—nnd a quality won
derfully predisposing the system to its habitual
use: to obtain therefore the’Soothing Opiate aud
Anti-Spasmodic Anodyne in all its virtues separ
ate from the deleterious principle of of the drug,
has for a series ofyears engaged the profound at
tention of the author; it presented itself to his
mind as a subject of great magnitude; the acqui
sition to tho Medical faculty of so important a re
medial agent, and the incalculable amount of hu-
TTnrn misery tmuwuiuu no mmrtaict vj- tnc-nis*
coveiy, have been to him a sure guarantee that
he would reap a rich reward for his labors, at least
in self-gratulntion. Having satisfactorily tasted
tho Elixir in several hundreds of instances, he
has now the happiness of saying to the public,
that his labors have been crowned with trium-
uraphnntsuccess. J. HAMILTON, M. D.
London, November, 1835.
From tho almost innumerable testimonials in
its favor, the few which follow are deemed abun
dantly sufficient to establish its infiuite superiori
ty over every other Anodyne preparation.
- London, January, 1837.
Having witnessed the effect of Hamilton’s ‘E-
lixir of Opium’ in a great number of instances, I
hnve uniformly fouud it to possess all the Ano
dyne, Sedative, nud Anti-Spasmodic virtues of
Opium, without producing excitement or any
of tho numerous ill consequences which at
tend the use of tho other preparations of
this drug The separation ofthe medicinal from
the noxious principle of Opium, has been the
subject of almost innumerable experiments, and
hitherto without success—that result,- so desirable
to the faculty and so invaluable to mankind, ap
pears now to liavo been obtained in this Elixir.
ALEXANDER McHENRY, M. D.
Ifully concur in the above.
ADAM LA ROCHE, M. D.
From repeated trials ofthe “Elixir of Opium,’'
I can cheerfully subscribe to the above.
JOSEPH M. NEWCASTLE, M. D.
I have for several months past prescribed the
“Elixir of Opium" in preference to any other
preparation, and concur in the sentiments above.
I r HOSEA GALBRAITH, M. D.
I In all cases where an Anodyne is required to
procure sleep, relieve pain, &c. tho “Elixir of
Opium’’ is preferable to any other preparation.
It is not ouly suitable in ail cases where ordinary
Opiates nre recommended, but can be Used m all
tliose cases where the other preparations of Opi
um would be unsafe and injurious on account ot
the excitement and other unfavorable symptoms
which they produco. Being freed from the stim
ulating. noxious, and deluterioits principles con
tained in the drug, the Etixircan be used without
producing any of the pernicious effects which fol
low the use of Opium in any ofiM known forms,
or in any manner deranging the functions or in
juring the general health ofthe patient.
Caution.—To obtain the genuine article, ob
serve that it is put up in'a moulded phial, contain
ing 1 1*2 ounces, with the words “ Hamilton’s
Elixir of Opium," brown in the bottle, that a duty
stamp lettered “J. Hamilton, London," is over
the cork, that every phinl has round it a handsome
colored envelope, aud every package of one doz
