From the lion. J.^Toliaferro, Member of Con
gress, and Member ofthe late Convention.
Richmond, 9th November, 1829.
Sir—It has been my wish, for. a considerable
timo, to ootmrmmcato the good effect with which
I have used your 'Patent Specific Ointment,* and
which I now understand is made and aold by A-
gento appointed hy yourself. I hrrvo applied this
Ointment during the last four years, to every spe
cies of tumour and wound, withont failure to pro
duce a cure in every instance. I consider it the
most decided and efficacious remedy in all cases
of tumour, be the cause what it may, and I have
found nothing so good forwonnds of any des
cription. It may be proper to add that the euro
ofa tumour called White Swelling, given over
hy the most distinguished physicians as incura
ble, and which they decided would, withqut am
putation, prove fetal to the patient, was, under
my immediate notice, effected by the use of your
’ointment, and the patient is in fine health, his
liinbfffectcd by die tumour being restored to a
perfect state or soundness. Also, that the leg of
a man upwards of80 years old, which had been
wounded, and exhibited one dreadfully ulcerated
surface from knee to foot, and which,;for more
than two years, had been considered incurable,
was effectually cured by tho application of this
Ointment. 1 mention these two coses, which fell
under my immediate notice and management, as
o decided evidence ofthe efficacy of this remedy
in cases of tumour aud of ulcers. I huvo experi
enced as decidedly,'tho good effect of this remedy
in tho cure of felons, and every species of fresh
wound.
In addition to the above cases, it may be proper
to state what I know of its sure effects as a reme
dy in all cases of scrofulous tumour.
It seems to me that any one who will observe
the operation of this Ointment, must be satisfied
as to its benoflciul effect. I can, with tho utmost
confidence, recommend the use of this most valu
able remedy, i am, Sir, very respectfully,
JOHN TALIAFERRO.

A Certain Cure for Slek Hcad-
Aehe«
W HICH has been used in families, every
member of which has had sick headnche

ond lias cured effectually in every instance yet
known, amounting to mauy hundreds. It is. not
unpleasant to Uie taste, and does not prevent the
daily avocations of one using it; it must be perse
vered in, and the euro is gradual, but certain and
permanent. Instances are constantly multiply
ing where this distressing complaint is complete
ly relieved ond cured, although of years itauding,
by tho use of Dr. Spohn's celebrated remedy.
One decided preference it ito pleasantneis, huv
ing none of the nauseatiog effects of common
drugs.
In all dyspeptic sy interns, costiveness, irregu
larity, distress offer meals, pains in the side and
torpidity nfthe liver, the cure is perfect, and any
one so afflicted will become immediately convin
ced on using it, that he has at Inst found a "sover
eign balm for his wounds." Females are particu
larly recommended to use it for costiveness or ir
regularity, and other female complaints. It b
£ roved to correct vitiated and disordered humors
eeping the stomach in mast porfectorder. Thoso
persons who after an evenings indulgence at par
ties, Ac. have headache aud dullness the next
day, will find this n sure preventive if token at
bed time. For oil common complaints, in a few
days ito virtnes will be self-evident, and a complete
cure will soon be effected. When a person has
a cold and feels unwell, generally a free nte of it
fora few days will be sure to relieve without
physic or pills. To children it may be given with
Uie greatest advantage.
In ail acidity or sourness of stomach this remedy
b sovoreign and invaluable; as a general family
medicine it is now adopted by many of the most
respectable fumilcs. It never sickens the stomach
or prodneesany of the unpleasant effects ofphysic.

friends, are now offered to the public fVom a
principle of beuevolcnco, and under the fullest
conviction that they will be found a safe and sov
ereign remedy for Dyspepsia. They have been
triumphantly tested not only by some of the most
respectable families in Uie District, ready to sub
scribe to their decided excellence, bnt also by the
fortunate discoverer, in self-experiment, who, for
ten long years, suffered all the gloom and horror
incident to that stubborn and distrereing'disease.
For a cure, much money was expended—Physi

eventually proved not to be the filing, inasmuch
as it left the system in a bad state—so weakened
and otherwise unpleasantly affected, that ito Amb
er use was deemed altogether unadvisable; which
circumstance led to the discovery and successfu
trial of these invaluable Bitters.
In noint of efficacy, these Bitters have been
found by the most satisfhetory experiments, to be

■ , White Sulphur THU.
A N opinion has been long ontertninod by In*
JX tejflgent medical men, femlllor with file use
ofthe waters ofthe White Snlphur Springs in
Greenbrier county, Virginia, that the medical
Virtues of thoso waters aro inninly dependent up
on the saline ingredients which they hold in so
lution. The correctness of this opinion has re
cently beeu dhnndaufiy established hy the sana
tive effects which are exerted upon the system by
tbo salts of these waters obtained by careftil evap
oration. Tbo simple salts of the water thus ob
tained, although sufficiently strong, io convenient
doses, for many cases of disease, ore, perhaps, as
a cathartic, too slow in their operation for general
use. To combine the speoiflo virtues of file salts
ofthe water with a more speedy cathartic effect,
it baa been found advantageous, to unite with
the saline ingredients, very small portions of veg
etable purgative matter, and in fins form tho arti
cle is now prepared under the lights and sanction*
of experience, and recommended, not asapana
cea remedial for every disease, but as n valuable
alterative and cathartic medicine, adopted to a
variety of affections ftir which medicines of this
druu are usually proper. For some time fids med
•cine has been prepared at file Springs and given
away to sncii individual- as desired ito use. The
calls for it have, however, now become no fee-
J inent (ito preparation being very troublesome)
t has been thought expedient to prepare small
quantities of it for sale to supply toe public. It
will be found well adapted to many cases of I) vs-
nepsia, Liver Compluints, Jaundice. Rheumatism,
Neuralgia, Cborosis, Cutaneous Eruptions, Ob
stinate Cos ivencss, and may be used with per
feet safety iu anv caio in winch an alterative at«*l

? ;ent persons familiar with tho medicine, believe
t to no peculiarly adnpted to tho cure of those
•hronic affections so successfully treated by the
use ofthe White Sulphur Water, bnt as yet, ex
perience with file medicine has been too limited
to jnstify any positive conclusions upon this point.
It usually operates on the bowels, when taken in
a full doso in from three to six hours. At the
'Springs,' where the medicine is much used, ad
vantage is thought to he derived from drinking
the White Sulphur Water freely the morning
after it is taken, to work it off, though it is not re

T HIS.worthy remedy earnestly repels the slur
of being a quack medicine, it having been
the result of many years study, experience and

immediate cause of the diseaso. It speedily*pro
motes a regular and healthy appetite which is
generally entirely destroyed or rendered very
precarious; by which effe**!, vigor end strength is
soon afforded to the whole system. It must be
apparent to all. that u medicine possessing these
peculiar virtues,-is useful in a great variety of
complaints. By renewing the healthy action of
the digestive organs, it has proved itself of re
markable benefit in dyspepsia, depraved appetite,
heart-burn, water brash, flntulcncy, jaundice,
night sweats, dysentery, bowel complaints, aud
all other affections of similar origin, bnt it is in
tho treatment of Fever*, and especially in Fever
und Aguo, or Remittent Fever, that its powers
have beeu principally tested, aud with those who
have seen ftouscfuluoss; it is pronounced sover
eign to all remedies heretofore discovered fo
tho*<c diseases. It has also been used as n pre
ventive, by many who were subject to a periodi
cal recurrence of the chilis and fever, ana it has
always warded off the apprehended attack. It
was deemed not improper to accompany tho
vegetable febrifuge with a few of tho many une
quivocal certificates politely furnished to tiio pro
prietor .corroborutivo ofthe foregoing statements.

Hamilton’s Elixir of Opium*
A new and important Discovery.
TT has l ong been a great desideratum in Medi-
JL cal Sc'ence, and has been the subjectof a vast
amounthf Chemical experiment, to obtain the
medicinal qualities of Opium to the exclusion of
ito noxious principle and useless combinations.
No article in the whole range ol the Pharmaco-
K is perhaps of greater importance to mnn-
nnu none which has engaged a greater share
of chemical attention. Every preparation hither
to made from this drug, whether in the form of
Extract,Morphia,Bleck Drop.Parncoric or Laud
anum,'contains in close combination a poison
with the antidote, and heuce we find the adminis
tration of them attended with a numerous train of
evils, ainoug which are headache, lassitude, tre
mors, nausea, vomiting, constipation, derange
ment of the nervous system—and a quality won
derfully predisposing the system to its habitual
use: to obtain therefore the'Soothing Opiate and
Anti-Spasmodic Anodyne in all ito virtnes separ
ate from tho deloterious principle of of the drag,
has for a scries of years engaged the profound at-
tention of the author; it presented itself to his
mind as a subject of great nfllhiiitnde; the acqui
sition to tiio Medical faculty of so important a re
medial agent, and the incalculable amount of hu
man misery that would be alleviated by the dis
covery, have been to him a snre guarantee that
he would reap a rich reward for his labors, at least
in self-gratulntion. Having satisfactorily tested
tiio Elixir in several hundreds of instances, he
has now the happiness of saying to the public,
that his labors nave been crowned with trium-
umphnnt success. J. HAMILTON M. D.
London, November, 1835.
From file almost innumerable testimonials in
ito favor, the few which follow are deemed abun
dantly sufficient to establish its infiuite superiori
ty over every other Anodyne preparation.
London, Januarr, 1837.
. Having witnessed fiie effect of Hamilton's *E-
lixir ofOpiuui’ in ft gieat number of instances, I
have uniformly found it to possess all the Ano
dyne, Sedative, and Anti-Spasmodic virtues of
Opium, without producing excitement or any
or tho numerous ill consequences which at
tend the use of the other preparations of
this drug The separation ofthe medicinal from
the noxious principle of Opfiim, has been the
subject of almost innumerable experiments, and
hitherto without success—that result, so desirable
to the faculty and so invuluable to maukind, ap
pears now to have been obtained in this Elixir.
ALEXANDER McHENRY, M. D.
Ifully concur in the above.
ADAM LA ROCHE, M. D.
From repented trials of Uie " Elixir of Opium,"
I can cheerfiillv subscribe to the above.
JOSEPH M. NEWCASTLE, M. D.
1 have for several months past prescribed the
"Elixir of Opium" in preference to any other
preparation, and concur in the sentiments above.
HOSEA GALBRAITH. M. D.
In all cases where an Anodyne ia inquired to
S rocure sleep, relieve pain, Ac. the "Elixirof
pium" is preferable to any other preparation.
It is not ouiy suitable in all cases where ordinary
Opiates are recommended, but can be used in all
thoso cases where the other preparations of Opi
um would be unsafe aud injurious on account of
the excitement and other itnfevorable symptoms
which they produce. Being freed from the stim
ulating. uoxious, and deleterious principles con-
tainodiuthe drug, fiie Elixir can he used without
f traducing any of file pernicious effects which fol-
ow the use of Opium in any of ito known forms,
or in any manner deranging the functions or in
juring tnegenorul health ofthe patient.
Caution.—To obtain file genuine article, ob
serve that it is put up in a moulded phial, contain
