unclean binla that have settled within the sane
tuarrof the Constitution, and sullied its tree-
urea has told with unerring cifect. The Rich
mond Whig says:
"Mr. Rives, a brilliant name before, now tokos
rank with the first names ol’the age. He has ex
hibited in his many contests throughout the year
a variety and depth of knowledge, a power of
argument,* mastery of dialectics and aboveall a
solidity of wisdom and a devotion to constitu-
lionalliberty. which elevate him far above all
former estimation of his abilities, high as that
was on the part of friend nnd Ibo.”
A valucdcorresnondent writoa us os follows!
"Then is a charm abonlthe publioand private
character of Mr. Rives that 1m. attached him
much to me. Icouslder hitn oue of the purest
of our statesmen. His whole career has been
marked by disinterestedness and consistency—
and Mr. Van Bnrenlostoueofthe brightest jew-
els in the circle of his supporters when Mr. Hives
reftised to follow blindly tho behests of the Exe
cutive.”
Gen. Harrison is among the People literally.
His whole journey to tho Dayton Convention at
Cincinnati, appears to huvo been like a triumphal
procession. He was accompanied bv ex-Gov-
ornor Metcalf, both riding on line steeds through
put. The long train of Western teams was stop-
eed at Sydney,(8holby Co.)by on immense gath-
ering of the People, and the old veteran address-
j ed them for an hour.—A great portion of the
I multitude then joined tho tmin in its progress,
[ which was again slopped at Urbann, where a-
ms of People had assembled to welcome it—the
lowest estimate of numbers being 20,000, as the
Urbana Citizen of the 9th assures us. At least
6000 of the fair daugfUers of Ohio tcere present.
Hero again the procession received on addi
tioo of thousands, and when it reached Dayton,
the whole body there assembled in Convention
covered TEN ACRES by actnnl measurement!
| And at no time were thero more than two-third* of
I the People on the ground. Every house will) a flag
was a hotel without price—the strings of every
door being out, and every lutch unfastened!
► The return of the party, (after the two days at
Dayton) was characterized hy similar exhibitions
I of the popular feeling. On Saturday morning
| the General addressed an assembly of 8000 at
Lebanon, 22 miles from Dayton, and as be pro-
I ceeded the roads were lined with teams and on
I horseback, banners and flags marking the whole
distance. It is saidjthat at no time was tho envoi-
| cade less than a mile in length. Thus goes the
I man of the people—whom they delighted to hon-
jr—Newark Daily Ado.
Honor to whom honoris due.—We leorn
I says the Philadelphia Inquirer, that the captain of
I a schooner and four men, arrived in the Schuyl-
I kill some days since, from Maine, with the object
loftaking in a lond of coal. Finding they could
1 not get their freight and return in time to vote,
I they closed the hutcheB or their vessel, put her in
Ichnrge ofa friend, and returned home with the
Iobject ofaszisting the Whig cause. They deserve
I the thauks of every Whig in the cauutry.
Pryiko into other folks business.—‘What
■are you doing there!* inquired Jack of Tom, as
■he caught him peeping through a key hole.
I ‘What’s that to you?,* said Torn, ‘t don’t like
■to see a person prying into other iolks* busi
I ness.’

Extract of a letter, dated
ST. THOMAS, AUG. 25.—There is no prospect
of obtaining freights from cither thkport or St. Croix
to New-York, nor is there any W. I. produce, excel
rum at38 cts; which is entirely too high for tho U. i.
Freights are more scarce this year owing to the short
crops and so large n proportion of the Porto Rico
sugars going to Europe. Our market it abundantly
supplied with corn meal for which there is scarcely
any demand. Flour hav been scarce, and sales have
been made at $7; but the demand is only for the con
sumption of the islond, (say 6 0 800 bbla per month,)
and the price must decline upon further arrivals; the
present stock inoy he about 180 bbis. Exchange is im
proving, ns the crop is quite done. Bills are becom
ing scarce. Wo quote 90 days on New York 1 per
cent discount; 90 days on London 84,5 a 4,67} per
