IT seems, liy the lift Museum, that 1
“ Captain Whitby, of the Britifit frigate Lean*
der, was challenged at Halifax by an Ameri
can gentleman. He declined it by faying, that
his duty to his foverefgn forbm it. He has
fmee been branded with the epithet of Cow- j
aril.”—Where our neighbors obtained this ar
ticle, they do not fay, consequently we know
not, therefore cannot vouch for its correef
nefs...this, however, is the fame Whitby whole
hands are stained with the blood of Pierce...
his cowardice on our coast was quite vitible...
for who, but an infamou coward would raiie ;
an inllrument of death against a peaceable and
’ unprotected citizen...uurhap? “his duty to ids
1 sovereign” Din not “forbid’ Tins. It is
somewhat furprifmg to us, that “ an Ameri
can gentleman,” Ihould place himfelf upon a
level, and put himle f up as a mark to be ihot
at oy a murdcites ! ! !
WE have seen various accounts, in the J
Northern Prints, of a conclusion of PEACE, 1
between the two great contending powers of
Europe, Enuiand and France; but, they J
mull be fabrications, as our London dat. to
the 19th of July make no mention of a cefia- J
tion of hostilities, or of a final conclusion of
- it is much talked of
: in Europe.
_
ON Saturday !aft, arrived af this port, in
15 days from Nuv-York, the brig Georgia,
! Captain Joc*iy.i...'\ this arrival a ;;c Neman
jof this city received a file of papers n: that j

| however, are not very important ..their fo
j reign dates are much later than before receive.:
jat this Office, yet, they are not I'o n v.nen
, tons as might have been expected...the great
1 queltioa of peace between England and dranee
j is, as ytt, on ‘he carpet. xtraefts from
these prints will be found in this morning’s
paper.
Os: the fame day, arrived the flrlp Eliza,
Starks, m 52 da’s .rom J ivevpooi ...by her we
received no papers ; but ihe brought dates nci
later than thole received via New-York.
U\ the fame day, arrived the Ihip Vo
lar.:, from Greenock...by a geittk.n t.i who
came passenger in laid flop, we learn, that the
ftiip Cato, Captain Pale, from New-Orleans
hound to Bordeatfx, vas wreck dby a storm
on Sunday the 24th ult. in latitude 2G, odd
minutes, by which flic loft all her malls, boats,
ike.-.-and after remaining on the wreck five
days, the Captain and his Crew were taken off
by the brig Adventure, Captain Heartvvell,
bound from Havanna to Philadelphia. In lat.
29, spoke br-g Albert, Captain Frazier, bound
from Matanzas to Charleftoii, who received on
board his vessel Captain Pale and five of his
feamen...Head winds obliged the Albert to
put into Cockfpur.
The gale... Scarcely a paper do we un
fold w ithout beholding the ravages of the late
gale...various ccounts of ihip-wrecks have we
read within a few weeks paft...but, none more
diftrefling...none more adequate to cali forth
< the tear of lympathy, than that of the Rosi:-
in-Bloom... forty-eight fouls were confined to
the wreck, expedlmg every moment to be
fwallowedup in the great deep, and of which,
twenty-one were doomed to a watery grave •!
What could be more pathetic than hearing an
aged father, yet holding on, as it were, by a
spider’s web, crying out, “ Save my daugh
ter ?” Then for fond liulband to fee his
wife and child burn and in the foaming elements.
IT appears that the Office of the “ New-
York Gazette and General Advertiser,” to
gether with all the printing materials, pub
liflied by Lang and Turner, have been con
sumed by Fire ; but we learn they have got
under way again.
Tiie Boston Gazette, of the 30th ultimo,
thus speaks of the settlement of the existing dis- |
l'erences between this country and G. Britain... j
“ Our files do not furnifh any remarks on the !
progress which has been made in the friendly I
negociation between the United States and
Great Britain. We are however assured, by :
gentlemen r,3cently fiom England, and by let- |
