merly givtn him by Thornberry, and now
amounting* to ten sheufand pounds. The
old man at firfl refufes to accept it, but is
finally persuaded, cn condition that it fhali
be considered a debt. Peregrine thin con
ducts him to his daughter, whom the cld
man forgives, and goes to the manor-house,
to demand redress. Sir Simon Rochdale
icfufes it with pafilon and insult. In the
meantime, Tom Shufllcton runs away with
and is married to lady Caroline Braymore,
the intended bride, and Peregrine appears
and proves himfelf the elder brother of Sir
Simon and heir to the estate. Frank Roch
dale who was before llTuggling between
affe&ion and a sense of juiticc one band,
and jjarental authority and family pride cn
the other, nobly resolves to refpedt his fa
ther’s voice fiiice lie liad fallen into adver
lity. Sir Simon consents to the marriage,
and Dennis Brulgruddcry comes in to com
plete the happmefs with intelligence that
Peregrine’s fliip with 100.0001. had arrived
fafe in port.
The chara&ers in this play are ably
drawn and probably diverged.
Job Thornbury is a perftdl pidhire of
the good Englishman. Corfeious that he
has done his duty he feels adversity like an
honeil man ; and while unafi'uming in gene
ral, he has too high a sense of his own rights
to creep 10 a fuperioi’s cri r.es and kiss the
foot that spurns him.
The peculiarities of the Trish are not
badly deferibed in Dennis
We think the character overdrawn.
Peregrine is a picture of honelly, gene
’ rofity and gratitude.
Tom ShufHcton is a just delineation cf
the trifling, fafhionable, unprincipled raical.
Sir Simon R.ochdale, one of those who
value no means to rails themselves and think
rank gives them a title to commit any por
tion of criminality without culpability.
Frank Rochdale is naturally pufftH'cil
of noble and generous fentimente, but thev
are reprefled by fe; < of the world, pride,
and the folicitaticns of his father, he would
never else think of repaying the loss of inno
cence with money.
Lady Caroline Praymore -is an elegant
piclure of fashionable folly and quality'no
thingnefs.
Nature fat to the pies ure of Mary Thorn
berry ; open hearted, credulous and pofief
fing exquiflte sensibility, lhc percievcs not
the snares in the path of innocence until
entangled in them.
Though vve are confluent that more than
one Mrs. Brnlgruddcry may be found, wc
charitably hope that chara&er does not
justly delineate the lower class of people in.
England.
Those who could unfeelingly view Mr.
Whitlock in Job, rn.ift not have been pa
rents : yet we think, one or two feenes
might have been amended. The manner in
which the trunk was taken from Peregrine,
bore rather the appearance cf e2gcrnefs,
and in the fainting of Mary, too little con
cern was exhibited.
Marshall was very well in Perigrine. In
recalling himfelf to the memory cld Thorn
bur)', and in claiming his birthright, he
was excellent, nor was he less so in the
feene with ShulHeton : in part of that with
Frank Rochdale, he was rather below his
usual flandard.
Hcdgkinfcn was exctflively comic in
Dennis. His Irifti was the best we lave
heard.
