A WONDER ! !
NKWBurch, (*• y.) June io.
Wc are informed by a gentleman who
passed thro’ Welfchester county last week
that the following very singular occur-j
rence, which happened a few days before,!
was related to him by a Mr. t utler, inn ‘
fceeper, residing at Tarrytown, and trout
our knowledge of the person who inform
ed u, and the person who related it to’
him, however much we are inclined to’
doubt, yet we believe there is, at least,
foroe foundation for the following . Wt,
however, lay it before our readers in the;
manner it was related by our informant,
who authorised us to make it public.
A pcrfon : (whofc name our informant
Lad forgot J iving near Tarrytown, ha
ving occasion to go to the river, to bring
up fome tubs, pails & which had been
sent to New York with butter ; on his
return got two jugs one of which he
filled with molaflcs and the other with’
rum, and put them together with his’
tubs, pads &c. in his waggon to return’
home, after dark in the evening. As-;
ter going a mile or tw on his way back
he perceived two black dogs keeping con i
ffantiy by the fide of his waggon, and!
running under the feet of his horses.
-at about io o’clock he flopped at Mr.l
Cutler’s inn and informed, Mm to use hist
own words, that ‘t wo damn'd black do^s 1
scad fallowed him thither, and that they’
were troubielome to him.” Mr. Cutler
took but little notice of it, and he soon
after went out to his waggon, logo to
his own house, which was not far off.—
Shortly after one of his neighbors was (
alarmed by hot frs running pall his door, <
apparently by the r.oife with harness and
traces on them : and knowing that this
person had went down to the river that
afternoon, he fulp.cted they might be
bis borfei, v hied .ad got frightened and
r ana way—nr lina.cdutely weotover and
Va .rnK-nei! the fi.'.iii/ got a candle and
i.kutthurn, ands > and the liorfes by the
barn. They then turned to look abet
• the unfortunate man, whom they found
with his face in the dirt.feverai yards before
jiis waggon, and his scalp almoll torn off;
!but was (licking to his head by a fmnll
|p ice ot Hein—all the wheels taken off:
and lay together with the linch pins,
fnurly piled i 1 a heap—the of ir.o
ilaffes and rum put under the fence form
ri.dance off ; excepting which, every o
jtuer article remained in tfie date in
which they were pat in thr waggon
-The man was taken up in a (late o( infen
(Ability, and conveyed to his own houfc,
Itgns of life were perceived, and medical
aid inflantly procured, but the phvfieian
gave but little hopes of his recovery. —
The next day he, however, recovered his
• senses and fpeecb, but all the informati
jhe could give was. that those two biack
idogs, after he left Mr. Cutlet’s inn, dill
(accompanied him, one which jumped into
jhi waggon and clapt his paw on his
head, which was all he could recoiled!
(He formed to regain drength, and tlie
physician then informed his patient that
the had no doubt but what he would get
i well; “Do you think so, ” replied
plie man with a (mile, and shortly after
: expired.

Being a member of the Artillery corps,
and attending the duties thereof through
the day, the editor is unprepared to
l give an account of the proceedings of
the various corps and the citizens on the
4th inllant. The oration of Mij >r
Charlton is said to have been elegant
and highly fatisfaftory to the audience,
which was numerous. Bottomed on
the principles of liberty and the rights of
man, it would noj be expected to please
every “ scholar ” of the “ old fchool.”
We are not therefore surprised to observe
the remarks upon it which will be found
in the following account of the proceed
