Are Nihilism and Anarchism Geographical Questions? •
QEVERAL years ago, the Asquith govern-,
eminent in England was brutally mis
treating Mrs. Pankhurst, because she robustly
demanded votes for women.
At the same time, the Taft administration
accommodated the Czar of Russia, by expell
ing the old woman who was called the leader
of the Nihilists.
The Jeffersonian, as you may remember,
commented upon the strange and unpleasant
spectacle of three of the greatest nations on
earth making war upon two old women.
Times have changed, and men have
changed: Mrs. Pankhurst carried the day in
England, and the Government had to let the
dear ladies vote; while in Russia, the Czar
has become plain Nick Romanoff, wliile the
aged heroine whom we drove out of this
country, was brought back from her banish
ment in Siberia, and given a tremendous ova
tion in Petrograd.
We are now in cohoot with both England
and Russia; and therefor?, in away, these
two old women are our distinguished part
ners.
Thus you see how the wheels turn, and
fetch up unexpected events.
President Wilson is the national colleague
of the Russian anarchists, nihilists, socialists,
revolutionists, cutthroats and ragamuffins—-
in short, the I. AV. W. of all the Russias.
We considered an alliance with them so

I N Arizona, a Corporation which was op
-1 erating copper mines and accumulating
vast riches oil’ the war, fell out with the
miners whose underground toil produced the
wealth.
What did the Corporation do? It took the
law into its own hands, as these American
Corporations have so often done since our
Civil War.
It ordered the Telephone Company to stop
all long-distance talk, concerning the labor
trouble.
It ordered the Telegraph Company to stop
all messages cconcerning the same.
It then “rounded up" more than 1100 free
American workers, like so many cattle, and
without any warrant of law, loaded those
free citizens on the railroad cattle-ears, and
sent them out of the State.
Banished them/ Banished them, without
a trial, of any sort. Banished them, in viola
tion of the Constitution of the United States,
and of the State of Arizona. In deeds that
spoke louder than words, this Copper Com
pany said, the same that the West Virginia
Coal Companies, the Colorado Rockefeller
Companies, and the Michigan Companies
had said, “To hell with the constitution !”
Those laboring men were dumped into New
Mexico, and left to shift or starve, as the
case might be.
Thomson, Ga., Thursday, July IS, 1917
important, that we sent our great Mr. Elihu
Root over there to talk them into seeing
things as we do.
The Russian I. AV. AV. were about to draw
out of the war, and make peace with the
dreadful German autocrats.
This would never do in the world: we
needed the stalwart help ol the Russian
anarchists, nihilists, socialists, I. W. W., and
other Russian rag tag and bob tail.
So we sent Mr. Root over, to converse with
these dangerous people; and Root soon had
the Russian nihilists fighting for us and for
England in fine style.
In the meantime, we had some anarchists
and I. AV. AV. here at home, and we did not
send Mr. Root to them at all.
Instead, we sent the Sheriff, and “de
ported” 1,193 of the I. AA r . AV. from Arizona,
because they had the audacity to strike for
higher wages—which, by the way, their Rus
sian brethren had done -first.
AA r e also sent the Sheriff to see Emma Gold
man, and she is now serving a 2 year term
in the Missouri penitentiary.
If Emma had gone to Russia at the begin
ning of the AVar, she would no doubt have
been placed on the Reception Committee,
when our envoy, Mr. Root, arrived in Petro
grad. " -
It’s an awful thing to make mistakes in
time and place: the nihilism of yesterday may
They were not accused of any crime I They
had. not done any violence. They were not
armed and had not made threats.
They merely asked for higher wages, on
account of the doubling up of prices, on the
food and other necessaries they had to buy.
And because they asked those war-fattened
vultures of the Copper Trust for an increase
in pay, they were outlawed by the Corpora
tion, banished to the deserts of New
Mexico.
The United States Government had to feed
those men, to keep them from dying of sheer
starvation.
And these Copper Tryst vultures are a fair
sample of the money-crazed capitalists, who
are so eager to have millions of America’s
best young men fed to powder and disease,
in European trenches.
Does not President Wilson realize that his
appeal to the Copper Company, in behalf of
the law, is rendered weak and ineffective, by
reason of the fact that he himself has shown
no respect for the Supreme Law?
Does he not know that the Conscription
Act, forcing citizens out of the Union, to
die in Belgium j(nd France, is every bit as
lawless, as the action of the Phelps-Dodge
Copper Company in forcing those 1,100
miners cut of Arizona ?
How can the President effectively appeal
to the Copper Trust, remonstrating against
be the democracy of tomorrow; and the In-'
dustrial who are kicked about like
homeless dogs in the United States, may be,
in Russia, the courted allies of our Govern
ment.
AA hen the United Railroad Brotherhoods
demanded higher wages, last year, and
threatened to tie up the commerce of a
hundred million people, they were not
rounded up in cattle-cars, and “deported.”
No, indeed!
The President and Congress got very busy,
at once, and compelled the Railroad managers
to knuckle.
When the Trade Unions of England struck
for increase of wages, two years ago, they
were not rounded up by Sheriffs, loaded on
cattle-cars, and dumped upon a desert, with
out food and shelter.
No! Mr. Lloyd-George the present Prime
Minister was pleaded with by the Asquith
government, to go to those Industrial AVor le
ers, and to pacify them by reasonable conces
sions.
In France and in Germany, strikes of the
same sort have occurred, and it is but natural
that they should.
The work people see that the corporations
are gaining prodigious wealth off the AA r ar;
and, as the workers make the products which

What are 1,100 miners to the 685,000 con

death “in foreign fields of blood"?
Lawlessness begets lawlessness. Violence is
contagious. Disregard for legal restraints,
easily becomes epidemic.
When regular soldiers of the United States
Army drove peaceable Socialists from the
Boston Common, what rebuke did the Com
ma nder-in-Chief administer to those lawless
wearers of the uniform?
None!
Therefore, you need not be surprised at
any time to read that United States soldiers
have broken up ether peaceable assemblies.
When that New York jackass. Justice Mur
phy—Roman Catholic —condemned the Prot
estant boy, Harry Auren, to 90 days in tho
workhouse, for circulating extracts from the
Constitution and, the Declaration of Inde
pendence, what disapproval did President
Wilson express?
None !
It is no wonder that.the war-fattened Cop
