FROM HIE CIIAHLESTON COVHIKH.
The following illusion may serve to Ex
plain one of the mysteries ot Mythology—
the location of Heaven above us,
’ hud been kitting at a feast of souls,
* banquet of pure spirits, where the thought
Speke on the eloquent tongue, and in the eye s
tiny sparkle, and the e'er changing play
Ot feature, like the twinkling glance of waves
Heneath the summer noonlight, J walked forth,
it was a night in autumn, and the moon
tV as visible through clouds of opal, lac’d
With gold and carmine—such a silent night
As furies love to dance and revel in,
When winds arc hush’d, and leaves are still, and
V waves
\ft sleeping on the waters, nnd’the hum
And Stir of life reposing. There was spread
He tore rev sight a smooth and glossy bay.
Mirror'd in silver brightness, and the chime
Os rippling waters on its pebbles, broke
Alone the quietude that fitl’-d the tor. %
llut'whcii the tremulous heaving ot the deep,
Far oft) along its sandy barriers, rose
And faintly echoed, as the fitful gust
Ruffled the placid surface glass’d bclc .v;
Or, at the call of night birds, where they flew
And sported in the sedges, low and sweet,
kike swllllows murm'ring, or the cooing voice
Or ring-doves, when they brood their callow
W young;
And cultur'd fields and gardens, and they lay,
f Amid the stillness of the elements,
Silent and motionless and beautiful,
For mist & moonlight soften’d down their forms,
And cover’d them with thin transparency,
j.ike Beauty melting through herJoose veils
A wind rose from the ocean, as it roll and
Blue in the boundless distance, and it swept
‘llic curtain’d clouds athwart the moon, &gave
The tmdtmtn’d azure of the sty to light
And full expansion. There my eyes were turn’d,
And there they found the magic influence,
V h>ch bound them, like enchantment, in a
trance
Os mnstexrdtcd feeling; and tlie sou!
Was lifted from the body, and became
A portion of the purity and light
And loveliness of that cerulean dome:
Aml U imagin'd cm the mountain top, _ .
Now silvered with tbe milder beams of night,
iln the blue arch, and on the robing moon,
Careering through the host of stars, who seem’d
To worship at her coming, and put out
The brightness of their twinkling, when sbe
mov’d
Serenely and majestically by
On these, and on the snowy cloud ‘, that hung
Their curtains round the Dorder of the sky;
Like folds of silken tapestry, it laid
A World of tenderness and purity Jr
The quiet habitation of the hearty
The rcsimg-plac of those impassion'd souls,
Who draw their inspiration at the founts^
Os Nature, flowing from that theatre, SB.
Whose scene is ever shifting wi It the play
Os seasons, as the year steals swiftly on.
And bears us with is silent foot, away
To dissolution, ardent souls, who love
The rude rock and the frowning precipice,
The winding valley, where it lies in green
Along the libbliog riv’let, and the plain,
Parted : n field and meadow, redolent
Os roses in the tiow’ry days of Spring,
And in the nights of Autumn, of the breath
Os frosted clusters, hung along the vines
In blue and gushing festoons, iu whose riud
The drink of souls, the nectar of the gods,
Ripens beneath’ the warm uneloudy sky.
I look’d upon this loveliness, until
A dtvnmc; me o’er me, and tlie firmament
Was animated, and spirits fill’d (lie air,
Floating <’n snow ey u iiljgs, ami rustled by,
Soiling the wind to coolness, and they came
messages of kindness, and they sought
The pillows of o’er-wearied toil, and shook
The dews of hetlie from their dripping illumes
Around Ills temples, till the mind.
Its sad realties, and happy dreams
Rose fair and sweet around him, and restor’d
Awhile the spotless hours of infancy,
\t hen life is one enchantment! Then 1 seem’d
llapt in a trance of ecstacy, and forms
Stood thronging round suprcnvty beautiful,
Whose looks were full of tenderness, whose
‘words
Were glances, and whose melodies were smiles;
Who utter’d forth the feelings ..f the soul
hi that expressive dude t, whose lci.es
No tongup can syllabic, the unseen chain
Which links 1 hose hearts that boat in unison.
It was that perlect meeting; whithei tend
Cv.r spirits in their better hours, and find
The balm of wounded besoms, where they
dream , • ri . - ■_
The eye of Mercy ever smiles, and Peace
For everbroods—They call the vision Heav’n.
a A ad thus hath man imagin’d he can find
Tlie region of his angels, ami lus gotis, . 9
And blessed spirits, same where in die sky;
Or in the moon, to which the Indian * urns,
And dreams it is a cool and quiet land,
Where insect cannot sting, nor tyger prowl;
Or on the cone of mountains, where tile snow,
Purest of all material things, is laid
Upon a cloudy pillow, wreath’d around
The midway height, and pariingfrom this world,
Olympus and the Swerga, holy bow’rs.
