COMMUNICATED. MISSPLACIDE’S BENEFIT. ■ VYe gladly seize the opportunity thus early of Rticing Miss Plaeide’s benefit. It is very inter, ■tieg to contemplate a young female, possessed ■ accomplishments and character, presenting Brself before the public in the probationary Bge of her professional career. An age since, Hd such a circumstance would have become Be subject of deep regret, either to a father or Brother; but thanks to the rigid virtue of a [ Slddons—to the exemplary conduct of a Farren — Bd to themnimpeachable manners of a Bolton, Bd an O’Neil, the English stage is now no long- B considered as the charnel-house of female pu- By.—Still it is an ordeal of no common degree. ■Although by the nightly audiences which go Bther merely in quest of amusement, it is as- Bciatcd with pleasurable feeling, it is to the per- Brner the scene of toil, of anxiety, and often of Hious disappointments ; sometimes the audi- Hce is not of a class to recognize, much less to Bvard the spirited and judicious attempts of an Bor to do justice to his author; and at other the performer himself, from the ennui of Hietition, from the inertness which a continua ■n of unsuccessful efforts, infallibly brings on, the necessity of appearing in parts not snit- Bo his powers, and a variety of other untoward becomes in an early period of if, with his professional life, We wish subject oi these remarks to be exempt these “ miseries of the Stag e.” Ht may be expected from what precedes, that Iw| should become the warm eulogists and de- of this lady’s qualifications for a pio so ardyous and a life so toilsome. We have had, ever sine my arrival here, a report of the fall of Lima. That report is now confirmed, the official account hav ing reached this place, by letters from General San Martin to the Directors of Chili and Buenos Ayres. The General states that the Royalists evacuated the city early in July, but that a number remained in the Castle of Callao, which he calculated on dispersing in a short time. The King’s men, residing in this place, think that the evacuation of Lima by their party, is noth ing more than a military Ruse de Guerre and that ere long the city will again be in their hand. They say that the extreme want of provisions compelled them to aban don the city, and that as soon as ihey get a supply, (being more pouerful in numbers than the Insurgents.) they can easily re take their possessions San Martin is an old hand at the bellows, and I doubt very much whether he is to be deceived so easi ly. If this be so, time alone will deve lope. The government of Buenos Ayres appear so be coming to their senses. Aware of the depredations commited by Priva teers sailing under their flag, and aware also that their reputation must suffer from such abuses, they have determined to grant no more commissions. They have even further, and have recalled all those hith- i ei to granted. This is a very popular mea sure. Buenos Ayre has, for a long lime, been a complete rendezvous for privateers men, and in fact, for men of infamous char acters, robbers, murderers, ike. ami mas ters of vessels that ranaway with their em ployer’s property always found there an asylum. But now the scene is changed, <icd l think Si uth America, particularly ! Chili and Buenos Ayres, is in a fsirer way! than ever. God send them a speedy re cognition of their independence.” Baltimore, Jan. 10. The following intelligence is extracted form a letter received at Annapolis by the! schooner Mary ami Ann, Captain Gates, arrived there in 14 days from Aux Caves. “ Port au Prince, Dec. 17. “ You have no doubt ere this heard of *he energetic measures taken by the Presi dent to compel the inhabitants to industry —he has giveu orders throughout the re public to put the whole military force in requisition to enforce bis orders that eveiy planter should cultivate all hi* plantations to their full extent.
