The counterfeiters lodged in jail in this city
wm e time since, made their escape on Mon.’
n i g ht last, by cutting away one of the iron ha :
from the window, and letting themselves down
from thence with ropes made of their blankets.
j t i s presumed that they must have had accom
plices on the outside, as they were furnished
with a chissel and an auger, which they left in
their cell as a memorandum. The deputy jail
or discovered their escape before morning ; but
measures which were immediately taken for
their apprehension have yet proved ineffectual-
Bv the brig Orion,Capt. Mayhew,lß days from
Kew-Orleans, and 14 from the B-.lize, we have
received the New-Orleans Commercial Report of
the 31st Dec. and the Louisiana Advertiser of
the Ist. January.
COMMUNICATION".
Among the musical performers of this coun
ty, I think Mr. Keene is one, of the most approv
i popularity. For dearness, strength and mel
ody of voice, he far surpasses Mr. Philips, and
perhaps any other performer who was ever lis
tened to on this stage. His higher tones are
melody itself. I have frequently witnessed his
performances at the theatre, and have been struck
with the strong effect produced on the audi
ence.
It will be seen by the bills, that his benefit
takes place this evening, and I hope those who
have been charmed with the magic of his voice,
will embrace the opportunity of gratifying him
n their turn, with the music most exhilerating
to apublic performer —the roar of a full house on
s benef tnight. It is not for the few dollars which
it will throw in Mr. Keenes pocket, that I am
particularly anxious about. The house on a ben
efit night, is supposed to be the thermometer
which measures the reputation of an actor. And
therefore, on this occasion, although I would not
have the Mercury to rise to fever heat, yet I
■houkl like well to see it many degrees above
ZERO.

I COTTON.—The superior qualities, if they
■lave not advanced, have,at least, fully maintained
■heir prices, since our last report. Sales were
■made, last week, of prime cotton, at 19 a2O cts.
■aidimone instance twenty one and ) was obtain
in':, for a very fine mark. The occurrence of the
■lolktovs, as well as the very severe weather ex-
in the early part ot the week, must
■wve operated as a serious check upon the activ
ity of the market. It is thought by many per
ftons, and indeed not without reason, that the ar-
Hicle has now attained its climax ; it is said, that
i’tho’the crops in many parts of the country will
■all far short of those of the last season, a suffi-
Icient quantity of new land has been taken up in
l.ther parts to supply the deficit. It isouropin-
Bott, however, from all that we have learned on
B*e sdfc;iect, (taking also into considerations the
■probability which exists of an advance in the
Bates of exchange on England,) that there is no
■ause to apprehend any reduction in the pri
lls of what is now considered first rate cotton,
■she demand for inferior sorts, it is presumed,
Bull continue to be very limited, until the finest
■re disposed of; the depreciation in quality may
■lien produce an apparent decline in price.
II SUGAR readily commands the prices at which

Bn small quantities, a fraction higher; Ifcjs esti-
Biated.that this year’s crop, compared with that
Biflast season, will fall short more thtin one half.
[ I M e have found much difficulty in fixing the
Brice of FLOUR :—Owing to the recent increase
Bfthe stock on hand and the expectation of ad-
Bji'ional arrivals soon, the market was, on Sattir-
Bhy, in a very Vacillating state. We quote it at
V' e price which we suppose it may bring to-day.

Bfthe large quantities which have been recent-
B imported. It would probably be much lower,
Bere there not some apprehension of the Cuba
Bmp proving smaller than usual.

Among the articles of the Report on the
Ratification of the Bases of the Spanish
Ts ifl'of Custom-house Duties, hitherto a
•lonted bv the Cortes Extraordinary, we
chiefly norite the following ones as more
generally interesting:—There will be but
ne Tariff for all the countries composing
the Spanish Monarchy, save the modifica
tions which the local anti particular cir
cumstances of the provinces beyond the
eas may require; anil it will be acted up
on in those different countries, from the
day of publication in the seine. Goods,
imported or exported in foreign ships, will
pay the duties mentioned in the Tariff,
and one fourth more of their amount; and
this will also be the case, if they be impor
ted in National vessels coming from Gib
raltar, the Ports of Portugal, or the coast
of Morocco. Foreign ships will be treated
in the ports of the Spanish monarchy, as
Spanish ships are treated in the ports of
the countries to which the former respec
tively belong. But, until a tariff of the an
chorage and other duties, to be paid by
Foreign ships driven info Spanish ports by
stress ot weather, or entering them for the
sole purpose of getting provisions, shall
have been drawn up, the rules, established
with respect to the United States of Amer
ica by the Royal Order of Oct. 20, 1817,
and the explanatory ones of March 12, and
May IG, 1818, and March 13, 1820, will be
observed with respect to every other For
eign nation. Ami lastly, Foreign ships of
forty tons burthen will be allowed to carry
to any from the Deposit Ports, Foreign
merchandize of lawful commerce—which,
by last years decree, no ship under eighty
tons was permitted todo; nor will they be
any longer limited, as they were by the
same decree, to the produce of their re
spective countries.
Leave has been given by the Spanish
Cortes Extraordinary to export such for
eign g-'ods as had been lawfully imported
into the Spanish dominions previous to the
adoption of the new General System of
Customs on the sth Oct. 1820, provided
the owners agree to pay a duty of 7 per cent
on the value of the same.
The standards and colors of the differ
ent corps composing the Spanish land for
ces and marines, are to be laid aside : and
brass lions, 8 inches long, of a proportion
ate height, holding the Book of the Consti
tution, and fixed on staffs, 8 Burgos feet
high, and 1 inch and four lines in diameter,
are to be adopted in their stead.

The Invisible Highwayman. — The fol
lowing circumstance of the truth of which
we have the most indubitable authority, oc
curred on Thursday evening last. On that
evening, M. Alexandre, was engaged toj
dispiaj his abilities before a distinguished
company of gentlemen, as among wh:n
i was Earl Grosvenor, at the residence us
! George Wilbraham, Eq. of Deiamere
j Lodge. For this purpose, about dark, he
took a chaise front the Royal Hotel, and
proceeded on his way. Finding that the
post boy did not make all the speed his ap
pointment required, Mr. Alexandre had
recourse to his curious art to quicken him
>n his way; and imitating the noise of the;
iapproach of horses, and throwing his voice!
first on one side the road and then on the
other, called our, “ Coachman stop !” re
peating the words several times. T won't
stop,’replied the young man, casting Ids
eyes on all sides, without seeing any body.
I’he call being, reiterated again and again,
he unmercifully belabored his horses, in j
hopes of out-going his supposed pursuers;
the voice now proceeded from behind; and
anon as from under the carriage; At last
the poor post-boy descended from his sta
tion, and taking one of the lamps, front its
sockets he ventured to examine behind, a
round, and under the chaise, without disco
vering any visible appearance, when to in
crease his astonishment, the voice still ar
ticulating the same summons, seemed to
proceed from the roof. Petrified with fear
and wonder, the affrighted post-boy again
mounted liis Vehicle, drove off*ivith increas
ed speed, and leaning towards the window
of the chaise, cautioned Mr. Alexandre not
to make a noise, as they were certainly
pursued by highwaymen. On reaching
the toll-gate immediately before entering
the forest, the young man communicated j
his apprehensions to the keeper whom he
charged to notice the man on hors.e-back,
whom he supposed to be behind, as they
passed. Mr; Alexandre still, however,
continued the joke, placing his voice some
times at a further and sometimes at a near
er distance, while the affrighted driver was
almost in a state of distiaction; till turn
ing from the Nouhwich turnpike to tile
road which leads to Dtdamere Lodge, he
thought himseif more secure, and began to
encourage his fare that they were out of
danger. But u|as 1 the shout of ‘Coach
man, stop ! stop ! we are still here,’ awa
kened arid increased all his horror. Arri
ved at the gate leading immediately to the
Lodge, he made shift to dismount and o
pen it; and having passed it, he had great
er reason than ever to suppose the robbers
would not dare to follow, yet still the cry
of‘coachman stop ! saluted his ears. His
fortitude finally forsook him; his limbs
shook; he declared that the devil was cer
tainly about them; and begged Mr. Alex
andre would not return that night to Ches-
he durst not drive him. Mr. Alex
andre related the adventure to his compa
ny on reaching the lodge, to their no small
amusement, it was impossible to pacify
the post boy, or persuade him of the hoax
that had been practised upon him, until he
was permitted to witness his performance,
and then, indeed, having demonstration of
Mr. A’s capabilities, he consented so bring
him home the same evening.

Richmond, Jan 12.
Se!d< m have the inhabitants of Virginia
been presented with a more tragical Scene,
than was witnessed in Mecklenburg.—
James Hunt, who lives near Spanish Grove
in this county, has three daughters, one a
bout 13 years old, one about twelve, and
the youngest about eight: and a negro boy
about the age of thi’ teen, were all the per
sons belonging to his family. Mr. Hunt
having gone to Richmond, left his three
daughters and the negro boy at home. On
Thursday evening, the 13tli of December,
the eldest daughter chastised the boy for
some misconduct. At their usual hour the
three girls went to bed, their bedding hav
ing been previously placed on the floor near
the fire. 1 A short time before day die gi'ls
caused the boy to make a fire, and again
went to sleep, but they soon slept the sleep
of death, for the boy irritated by the chas
tisement lately received, and instigated by
a diabolical desire of revenge, as soon as he
perceived them tranquil,horridly murdered
the three sisters as they lay asleep, by beat
ing out their braitl3 with an axe. Having
remained after the perpetration of the mur
der until day, took whatever he imagined
valuable to him, and set fire to the house
which was burnt down, and every article of
Hunt’s household furniture was consumed:
several persons who saw the fire, hastened j
to the spot and got the girls out before!
they w’ere entirely consumed. But so de
formed were they by the fire, that no hu
man being ever presented a more lioirible
appearance. Upon taking up the hoy, he j
confessed every circumstance. A coroner’s
jury upon examination into the case,call-|
ed iii'-.i before them, when he stated to (lie
jury every circumstance agreeable to his
former confessions, He is now in jail ; and
noduubr ample justice will be rendered to
one whose youthful villanics have been so
execrable.
