FOB THE MUSEUM.
TOY .
O magic love! thy soothing power pervades
The heart of man from low to lvighcst grades;
The hermit’s cell—the monarch on his throne,
The youth in bloom—the man of years full gone,
The low'y ploughman—and the dome of ease,
The hero’s soul—and vassals on their knees;
All own thy’ power, and own thy happy sway,
All greet with ardor the conjugal day.
‘Tis love that knits two hoping souls in one,
And loosens happy the encircling zone.
How dire the arrow sped from fortune’s bow,
O then how cruel death’s all blasting blow!
They w ho’ , e enjoy’d, alone the thoughts can tell
Which rack the bosom at the sad farewell.
Ne’er in my heart which <>d;er passions swell,
Were known the joys which pure in wedlock
dwell;
The blushing charms which swift arouse delight,
But showed the viewer, that in others’ sight
Alone he’d find the little comfort given
To disappointment, on this side of Heaven.
But other joys have high tin bosom bear’d,
And other sorrows show’d the heart bereav’d.- •
Oft as I’ve knelt upon the grass-grown grave,
Os her whose love claim’d hah my life to save :
Above the sou was rais’d the'lcaden e)e,
Which fondly saw her in the praising sky;
Then rose the orizon such views inspire—
In heaven may glow the filial, sacred fire!
l Tis this alone can clear our morning bright,
And only this can give a lasting light;
O desp’rate mourner! shall we cease to chi le
Thy grief for her who slumbered at thy side ?
Yes—cease to chide i but other trust will rear
A tomu all pure, without a falling tear;
O’er which the myrtle mingles w ith the bay,
And gloomy darkness change to cease.’ ss day.
‘Has wasted eveiy hope,”—ah! mourner, no—
There is a hope, which drowns all earthly wo;
Which, bowed before the sad and lonely iomb,
Will gi and the horrors of thy low’ring gloom;
And He who wept at l.azarus’ humble cell
Can lead the griev’d where joys eternal dwell.
Anflhe who burst the bands of conqu’ring death,
Bade suns turn black, and quit our every breath,
Spake worlds to birth— will make dear friends
return —
And man bereav’d will ever cease to mourn.
