THE MUSEUM.
Prom the Pirate, by the author of Waverly.
THE SOXO OF HAROLD HAIU'AaEK.
The sun is rising dimly red,
The wind is wailing low and dread;
Prom his cliff the eagle sallies,
1 .eaves the wolf his darksome vallies;
in the mist the ravens hover,
.Peep the wild dogs from their cover,
Screaming, croaking, baying, yelling,
Each in his wild accents telling,
‘'Soon we feast on dead and dying,
Fair hair’d Harold’s flag is Hying.”
Many a crest on air is streaming,
Many a helmet darkly gleaming,
Many an axe the arm uprears
Doom’d to hew the wood of spears.
All along the crowded ranks,
Horses neigh and armour clanks;
Chiefs are shouting, clarions ringing,
Louder still the bawl is singing,
Gather footmen, gather horsemen,
To the field, ye valiant Norsemen.
Halt ye not fdr food or slumber,
View not ’vantage, count not number.
Jolly reapers forward still,
Grow the crop on vale or hill;
Thick or scatter’d, stiff or lithe,
It shall down before the scythe.
Forward with your sickles bright,
heap the harvest of the fight,
Onward footmen, onward horsemen,
To the charge, ye gallant Norsemen.
“Fatal chuscr of the slaughter,
O'er you hovers Odin’s daughter;
Hear the choiee she spreads before ye,
Victory, and wealth, and glory ;
Or old Vrlballa’s roaring hail,
Her evcr-circling mead and ale,
Where for eternity unite
The joys of wassail and of fight.
Headlong forward, foot and horsemen,
Charge and fight, aid die like Norsemen!”
At the battle of M i.engo, Lieutenant
Conrad, of the 2d regiment of 01 se art,i le
ry, had his leg earned off by a caution bull.
He consoled himself while lyi.ig ou ‘hr
ground, with observing the :ang. es is bat
tery. I’he soldiers wished to remi se him
buthe refused their assistance. Keep to
your guns,” said he, “and take care to
point lower.” Percy Anecdotes.

Military Devotion.—ln 1760, the prince
of Uiunswich, Cominander-in-Cliief of the
Hanoverian army, had made every disposi
tion to surprise, by night, the Fiench at my.
Louis b’Assas, Captain'in the regiment of
Auvergne, was posted with bis regiment
near the wood of Klostercamp, in the De
partment of Uoer ;and, rvisbioi g to assure
himself of the position of the enemy, he
went alone to explore the wood. He hud
not advanced many steps w hen he was sur
rounded by a troop of the enemy who
pointing ‘heir bayonets at him, threatened
to kill him oil the spot if lie uttered a word
—D’Assas, superior to all personal consid
erations when duty called, >uf with
all his might, “A moi 4’ Auvergne! The
enemy are at hand.” He w;. on the in
stant biyonetted to death ; but his last
words, by giving the alarm, sared the ar
my.—it.
An instance of similar and v riion occurred
at the seigeof Dantzie.in 1807. Ope Knv
tonas, a private in the 12th French light in
fantry, happened to stray in the dark, into
the midst of a column of ltussians, who cri
ed out to an advancing body of French,
“Do hot fire ; we are Frenchmen I” Altho’
threatened with instant death if he sprke,
lie boldly called out,“Fire, fire, iny captain;
they are not French, but Russians !”— ib.
