5 AIHKNEUM.
IN a comn.unity of Fieemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading peop'e, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable. That the Atheneum will
be a paper of tins description, it might perhaps
be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far S3 persevering industry and attention can
insure success to his undertaking—so far, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that
he w ill endeavor to render his paper worth
1 he growing importance cf Athens, where
the flourishing University of the State is loca
ted, anti surrounded, as it is, by rr intelligent
and “cl ,thy neighborhood, has induced a belief
that no place in the tipper country presented a
more inviting opening for the establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion h;.s led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enlightened community,
l-is undertaking will receive an approving sanc
tion. And while his own exertions will be i er
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to his supporters, he will ven
ture to hope that his columns may be diversified
by the occasional communications cf such scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
tins object, lie will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits
will allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communications, or Moral Bs
j says us have the public good in view, and are
free from personalities : but to articles intended
merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to
provoke or continue personal contests, no place
will be given. And though m judging of these
the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of rejecting, as well as of inserting communica
tions, must be reserved to himself.
As an editor it will be his interest—as it will
be, under all circumstances, his inclination—
to gi re general satisfaction. From the fine of
impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have cause to accuse him of vol
untarily giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It will scarcely be necessary to say, that the
political complexion of the Atheneum will be
Republican. In this age of light and knowledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron
age.
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week,
on a super-roj al sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year ai lea it,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(Tj’Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by
the first of September, as it is contemplated to

Lands for Sale.
WILL be disposed of at a low price and on
7 T accommodating terms, a valuable tract of
land on Lewis’ Creek and on the Altamaha river
4 miles above the town of Darien, formerly the
property of Mr. Wm. Joyner. The tract consists
of 1190 acres, 200 of which are cleared and im
proved with the ordinary Plantation Houses—
There are about 800 acres of first quality tide
land, suitable for tire culture of Rice, Colton or
Sugar; the remainder high land, with an exten
sive know! fine elevation on which the settle
ment is made.
The land is well timbered, and from its conti
guity to a market, will, in its clearing, instead of
incurring expense, produce profit by the sale of 1
Shingles and other lumber, the proceeds of which
must far exceed the expences of the labor. This
tract is one of the oldest surveys and consequent,
ly best selection of River Swamp land, with an
excellent pitch of tide, suitable to any species of
culture —having a beautiful scite for a residence
and located at an agreeable distance from the
town of Darien, for purposes of business or plea

may be known on application to
