PROPOSAL S,
For publishing at ATHENS, in the State of Geo*,
gia, u ne~m -meekly pnper, to be be entitled the
ATHENE UM.
IN a community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensivelylrrariifested, the importance
of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
ol being acceptable. That the Atheneum will
be a paper of this description, it might perhaps
be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so fur
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insure success to his undertaking—so far, at
least, the’ subscriber can pledge himself, that
he will endeavor to render his paper worth
The grow ing importance of Adieus, where
the flourishing University of the State is loca
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for the establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himseltj that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enlightened community,
his undertaking will receive an approving sanc
tion. And while his own exertions will be r er
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to his supporter;;, tie will ven
ture to hope that his columns may be diversified
by the occasional communications ofauch scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor's principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
this object, lie will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits
will allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communications, or Moral Es
says as have the public good in view, and are
free from personalities : but to articles intended
merely to gratify revengeful feelings, ami to
provoke or continue personal contests, no place
will be given. And though in judging of these
the editor may occasionally ei r, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of re jecting, as well as of inserting comnumica
tions, must be reserved to himself.
As an editor it will be his interest—as it will
be, under all circumstances, his inclination—
to give general satisfaction. From the line of
impartial duty, he# ill endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have cause to accuse him of vol
untarily giving a needless olfence to a single in
dividual.
Itwiil scarcely be necessary to say, that the
political complexion of the Athcneum will he
Republican. In this age of light and knovdedge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could he erpected to receive, public patron
age.
CONDITIONS.
The Athenehm will be published once a week,
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
ytJjir, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, it
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
1 Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.

Lands for Sale.
VI7ILL be disposed of at a low price and on
f ? accommodating terms, a valuable tract of
land on Lewis’ Creek and on the Altamaha river
4 miles above the town of Darien, formerly the
property of Mr. Wm. Joyner. The tract consists
of 1190 acres, 200 of which are cleared and im

There are about 300 acres of first quality tide
land, suitable for the culture of Rice, Cotton or
Sugar; the remainder high land, witli an exten
sive knowl fine elevation on which the settle*

The land is well timbered, and from its conti

incurring expense, produce profit by the sale of
Shingles and other lumber, the proceeds of which
must far exceed the expences of the labor. This
tract is one of the oldest surveys andconsequent

excellent pitch of tide, suitable to any species of
culture —having a beautiful scite for a residence
and located at an agreeable distance from the
town of Darien, for purposes of business or plea
