To the Public.
D. CARNOCHAN and P. MITCHELL, are
sorry to be again brought before the public,
a second notice of Mr. Christie’s, who has
idoubtedly claims against them, which, when
ally liquidated on the decision of the suit now
nding, they Will try to satisfy as soon as possi
e thereafter.
The deeds under which Mr. Christie claims an
elusive right to ail the real and personal es

formal, unjust and illegal, lienee they have
en brought and are still before the court, and
her deeds have been executed and recorded,
nveying the prdpei ty for the use ot all their
editors, Mr. Christie included, without any
ust or reservation beneficial to C. & M or their
rallies, and if this be not agreeable to that
intleman, it must nevertheless appear fair and
juitable to the public and all who have a sense
justice.
The Trustees under the late deeds are anxious
sell the lands in Florida, alluded to in the no
e of Mr. Christie, and to apply the proceeds,
the immediate payment ot part ot his de

his claim, subject to the decision ot the courts
but his opposition to any reasonable sale, as
ie interested in his own right, whilst injuring

to be made under an orde'’ of court.

SATURDAY MORNING—AUGUST IT, 1822.
The subscriber respectfully submits to the
public the following
PROPOSAL S, ,
For publishing at JITHEXS, in the Slate of Geor
gia, anew -weekly paper, to be be entitled the
ATHENEUM.
IN a community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable. That the Atheneum will
be a paper of this description, it might perhaps
he deemed presumptuous to assert; hut so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insure success to his undertaking—so far, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that
he will endeavor to render his paper worth
she growing importance of Athens, where
the flourishing University of the State isloca
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for the establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present prop -sals, and
the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enhghteited community,
his undertaking will receive an approving sanc
tion. And while his own exertions will be per
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to his supporters, he will ven
ture to hope that his columns may be diversified
by the occasional communications of such scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
this object, he will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits
\ill allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communications, or Moral Es
says as have the public good in view, and are
free from personalities : but to articles intended
merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to
provoke or continue personal contests, no place
Will be given. And though in judging of these
the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of rejecting, as well as of inserting communica
tions, must be reserved to himself.
As an editor it will be his interest —as it will
he, under all circumstances, his foclination—
to give genera! satisfaction. From the line of
impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have cause to accuse him of vol
untarily giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It will scarcely be necessary to say, that the
political complexion of the Atheneum will be
Republican. In this age of light and 1 uowledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron-
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week,
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
