the said firm, as well as their own individual
property and estate, consisting together of
louses, lots, lands, stores, wharves, negroes, &c

To the Public.
B. CARNOCHAN and P. MITCHELL, are
sorry to be again brought before the public,
jy a second notice of Mr. Christie’s, who has
mdoubtedlv claims against them, which, when
inally liquidated on the decision of the suit now
lending, they Will try to satisfy as soon as possi
>le thereafter.
The deeds under which Mr. Christie claims an
uclusiVe right to all the real and personal es
atc of Cornochan k .Mitchell, are considered as
nformal, unjust and illegal. Hence they have
iecn brought and are still before the court, and
ither deeds have been executed and recorded,
conveying the property Tor the use of all their
treditors, Mr. Christie included, without any
.rust or reservation beneficial to O. & M or their
‘amilies, and if this be not agreeable to that
(entleman, it must nevertheless appear fair and
waitable to the public and all who have a sense
if justice.
The Trustees under the late deeds are anxious
o sell the lands in Florida, alluded to in the no
ice of Mr. Christie, and to apply the proceeds,
o the immediate payment ot part of his dc
sand, and deposit a sufficiency thereol to covers
11 lus claim, subject to the decision ot the courts
-but his opposition to any reasonable sale, as
me interested in his own right, whilst injuring
ill parties concerned, must be borne until a sale
an be made under an order of court.

TUESRDAY MORNING—AUGUST 20, 1822.
The subscriber respectfully submits to the
public the following
PROPOSAL S,
For publishing at .ITHEMS, in the State of Geor
gia, anew weekly paper, to be be entitled the
ATHENEUM.
community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable. That the Atheneum will
he a paper of this description, it might perhaps
be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insure success to his undertaking—so tar, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, ihat
he will endeavor to render his paper worth
The grow ing importance of Athens, where
the nourishing University of the Slate is loca.
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and w ealthy neighborhood, lias induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for the establishing a
new’ w’eekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enlightened community,
lus undertaking will receive an approving sanc
tion. And while his own exertions will be t er
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to his supporters, he will ven
ture to hope tlut his columns may be diversified
by the occasional communications of such scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit,
the community.
To make his paper useful, Will lie the propri
etor’s principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
this object, lie will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as lus limits
wiil allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communications, or Moral F.s
says as have the public good in view, and are
free from personalities : but to articles intended
merely to graiify revengeful feelings, and to
provoke or continue personal contests, no place
will be given. And though m judging of these
the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of rejecting, as well as of inserting communica
tions, must be reserved to himself.
As an editor it will be his interest—as it will
be, under all circumstances, his inclination —
to give general satisfaction. From the line of
impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have oause to accuse him of vol
untarily giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It v. ill scarcely be necessary to say, that the
political complexion of the Atheneum will be
Republican. In this age of light and knowledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, ur
could be expected to receive, public patron
age.
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week,
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, it
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(jj’Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by
the first of September, as it is contemplated to
issue the first number early in that month.
